Another element of Miley’s endurance as a public figure despite a drop in commercial success is most definitely how funny she is. She took over for both Fallon and Ellen while they were out and co-hosted New Year’s Eve with Pete Davidson. Being on the good side of comedians has only been of help to her as she’s reintroduced herself to the world as an adult.
While I agree that Selena is the most “successful” of the 00s Disney queen trio, what I find most interesting is that she seems to chart because of herself, not the song. Whether it’s her on and off again relationship with Beiber or her health battles, people seem drawn to check out her music because it’s Selena singing, not because of the music itself (at least in my opinion). That’s why, despite having more charting songs, I feel like the general public only bring back two from her non-Disney days (Come and Get It and Lose You To Love Me). I’d be curious to hear from you, in a future Selena video, why you think we as a public are so invested in her journey while other stars with similar or worse strife in their lives fall to the wayside.
As far as another video idea, I’d love to see you tackle the failed musical career of Vanessa Hudgens. After her phone was hacked and her nudes were leaked as a teen, Disney did her DIRTY and her musical career, as well as her film career, have never been restored to what it once was thanks to Disney’s tyrannical puritanical rule.

Vanessa was done so dirty, you’re totally right! And I definitely can’t wait to do a Selena video, because her discography is actually so interesting. I think I’ll probably touch on that in my review of her doc! Thanks for your comment :)

plastic hearts is most definitely my favorite miley album, and i saw her in concert last year which was fantastic because she did play a lot from the breakout/hannah days. in interviews she’s said it’s difficult for her to make an album because she could write a song and by the next day it won’t resonate with her anymore, which i think shows how having two identities as a child has made her need to constantly search for who she wants to be as an artist. i also think that’s why her albums are confused and come off as inauthentic. by the time the album comes out, she doesn’t relate to the music anymore so that’s why she wrote off she is coming and younger now so quickly. i think it’s promising that she hasn’t said those things about plastic hearts as far as i know. maybe she’s found the place she wants to be for a little bit. she got to work with billy idol, stevie nicks, and joan jett on this record. as seen by all of her covers, miley is a huge fan of…everyone in music. she even wrote in her memoir at age 15 (lol) about how stoked she was to learn some guitar stuff from the guitarist from lynyrd skynyrd and covered smells like teen spirit on the hannah montana tour. perhaps her collaborations with artists who occupy a space she’s seemingly always wanted to occupy will lead to her finding authentic artistry in her next project.
i’ll support most any music she makes anyway because she is a giant part of my childhood, but i would really like to see her embody her full potential as well.
Thank you for the awesome video you are killin it

Plastic Hearts is a masterpiece. its def her most cohesive work to date. I used to feel the same way the creator did about mileys career until I watched hours and hours of interviews. She explains a lot of the messages behind her songs that are deeper than what you would expect if you took them for face value. Miley is a genius, & I don't just mean creatively. I would def suggest watching her Zane Lowe interviews. Also Bangerz still hits. I MEEEEAN SMS(bangerz), My Darlin', Drive, Someone Else.... i agree with many points that you make but as long time fan of miley (she is to me what taylor is to you) i disagree with the thought that she may not know who she is or that she needs to focus or stick to something. cause as long time fan i know she just changes with the time and that’s one of the thing that makes her unique as an artist. in the zane lowe interview she says that by the time she drop the midnight sky remix she had already moved on from the song, she no longer felt like that (i bet that this happens to many artists but they simply don’t say it), she also expresses that she feels like she goes to bed like one person and wakes up as another, and even though it probably has something to do with the hole hannah thing i don’t think that is something she is gonna be able to change, she to me is constantly evolving due to what ever is happening in her life. to me the problem comes with the fact that the changes are to fast or inspected and if you are not a long time fan knowing where she is coming from and what is going on it feels fake and out of pocket. As a long time fan i’m just hoping that she stop caring about charts success or what people are gonna think and she does another dead pets where she just experimentes with whatever she is feeling.
(also younger now was a mess cause the label didn’t expect Malibu to be a hit or have any relevancy and when it did they pressured her to make a record, she has said in passing that when she drop Malibu in May she had 4 or 3 songs more and the record came out in September, she would also talk about the record and how she was planning it to be to came out contradicting those plans)

Very uncomfortable hearing how much Disney really pushed out certain expectations and ideas while trying to aim towards the tween market. I don’t know how someone in Miley position was able to get through being a Peter Pan of sorts for every child of America. You got so much wrong in this video lmao .. like i totally understand the point you’re trying to make that her artistry isn’t always that cohesive but you basically say she fell off after Bangerz which is simply untrue.. maybe it’s an american centric attitude you have - but in Europe, Nothing Breaks Like a Heart, Midnight Sky and Prisoner were all giant hits, you’re pulling up info from billboard and your own taste in music and representing it as data.. Plastic Hearts topped the rock charts for 6 weeks and is regarded as her best work and was adored by critics, you’ve creating a false narrative in a lot of your comments.. Saying she’s gained no fans since Hannah Montana when under all of her covers there are 40+ year olds saying they’ve discovered and love her music isn’t realistic. Also claiming she chases features for relevancy is insane , because she is not a feature artist .. and you will find Ariana, Nicki and basically everyone else in the industry do that WAY more. I’m not sure you really have your facts straight, it feels like you have an opinion on Miley that you’re wanting everyone else to agree on but there’s very little to actually back up any of your claims.

During the Plastic Hearts era she was interviewed by Zane Lowe from Apple Music, and shares a lot, which is not common for her. The interview is full of highs and lows, just like her career. I love her to pieces, unfortunately I’ve never seen her live before, despite her coming to Brasil 3 times. And just a small correction that does not interfere the least with the excellence of the video, I believe the performance you were referring to towards the end was Lollapalooza 2022 in São Paulo, not Rock in Rio.

Also, fun fact, Taylor Swift performed with Madonna at the iHeart music awards in 2015 during the 1989 era. Interestingly enough, Taylor said that Madonna's Like a Prayer album helped influence 1989 because of the way Madonna took musical risks and re-invented herself everytime like Taylor did on 1989. It's no coincidence that Like a Prayer was released in 1989. Haha sorry for rambling. Taylor and Madonna are my two Queens. At first when you were talking about her music career post Disney not being that successful I thought you were kind of underestimating her but after watching the whole video I realized I'm only familiar with her hits. My sister and I were huge Hannah Montana fans and I'm so familiar with all her music from the Disney days that she's possibly even a bigger music star in my head because of that. Also, it's very interesting to me to see how she was perceived by the media and the people in the us cause I live in Greece (and was like 5 to 9 years old at the time lol) and I wasn't aware of how criticized she was.
Side note, not to bring everything back to Taylor but one of my first memories of her is crazier and when she was mentioned in an episode. You've been a swiftie for so long, was Taylor being a part of the Hannah Montana universe a big deal to you at the time?

The fact that she CHOSE the path not to sell was her choice.slena and demi do not have such big songs. Besides cool for the summer and lose tou to love me. If miley hadnt released dead petz she would've been up there with ariana but she did release it because shes miley and she does what she wants. Thats why her fans love her

Great video as always. One thing I don't agree with. I don't think that selena is the best artist to come out of Disney. Miley's songs were always better than selena's and her voice is also a lot stronger. Plastic hearts itself proves that miley was the best Disney talent. Selena might be more famous but that has to do more with the justin bieber couple goals drama than the actual music
    .
Please let the next video be about katy Perry's witness. Her downfall has always surprised me because it was so sudden. And so you think Taylor Swift had anything to do with witness not being received well by the public?? We all know about the spotify sabotage Taylor did. Love the content. Keep producing it. ❤

Breakout, can't be tamed, younger now and endless summer vacation are my favourite eras of hers. They feel deeply authentic, they talk about her and she gets vulnerable. Miley Cyrus is least successful out of these three women? Maybe judging from most mainstream current hits, Selena is above her but taking into account her musical and creative development and all her backyard sessions and rock covers which gained her incredible reach and respect from multiple generations, it's definitely Miley.
    My initial pick would be:
    1. Miley
    2. Selena
    3. Demi

I have never been a huge Hannah Montana or Miles Cyrus fan although I did like the show as a kid and I really like some of her song like Slide Away and Midnight Sky. However, I do think that she just has that natural star power as you said. I don't why but for some reason I have always been rooting for her even during all the hate that she received for wrecking ball for example. I think she is an interesting person and artist that is very likeable and obviously very talented! I hope she will lean more into rock without having to cosplay it and I hope that she will find inner peace within herself as well as with her past. Anyways, thank you so much for the video! You video essays are my favourite videos of yours and I would love an analysis on Selena Gomez and why she is so loved not only by her fans but also by such a wide audience. I also like Selena but I find it interesting sometimes how she was able to become such a well liked person where liking and rooting for her is almost a consensus.

I dont know if its because Im not from the US, so I cant speak to that, but if you asked me to name 5 Selena and Demi songs or be shot I would be dead 😅 Im not particularly impassioned by either of the 3 but I personally feel Miley has far more cultural relevence. This is only cemented now with her new album. I realise this was made a year ago, but I do believe Plastic Hearts was a moment too. I never watched Disney channel as a kid either, so I guess she has in fact gained new audience.

Miley did not create plastic hearts the album because of heart of glass and how people liked the cover and saw the success of it. If you were a true Miley fan you would know that Some the songs for plastic hearts were going to be in she is Miley Cyrus EP trilogy. Miley songs in plastic hearts like bad karma, Golden g string, hate me, and more were made in 2018-2019. The album was more than finished before heart of glass came out.Miley just decided to do a more rock influenced album which was great because her trilogy of eps we’re gonna have a shit tone of rock either way. Plastic hearts was planned

To further your point, Miley has said in interviews that she changes her mind creatively within months (in BB Talk she also says "I heard I change my mind way too often"), and I imagine that is VERY frustrating to producers and her co-writers who are wondering if the material they worked hard on (and gave their 💲valuable💲 time to) will never see the light of day. If I'm a songwriter/producer, I'd rather work with someone who is more likely to stick with their original vision and consequently put what we worked on on the record. As you said, Miley's impulsivity and the fact she changes as a person every 2 minutes speaks to both childstar trauma and also weak creative vision that hinders her career.

Honestly, I believe that Miley’s time at the spotlight will come again - she has such a natural charisma that translates to her music and singing, and it seems to grow as she ages. A lot of people hate Dead Petz but I love that album. It’s quirky, weird but also so childishly unapologetically truthful and real, eventually so “Miley like” (highlight of that album is Space Bootz for me). Every other attempt for success is held but by a degree of careful marketing calculation. SHE IS COMING has highlights and potential but is ruined by the same thing (DREAM and party up the street are great).
For me Plastic hearts was a disappointment in a way. I love some of the songs that scream MILEY to me (Never be me, Golden G string, Angels like you is a carefully crafted hit).
But eventually it’s still her holding back, taking risks but only halfway, carefully calculated album that brings nothing new to the table. But as you stressed - it’s cohesive. And that’s a major step up and, in a way, a hope for her future albums. No matter what she decides to put out, I am excited to listen to it. After all - she is Miley f*ucking Cyrus.
