"When is it enough?" The million dollar question. I say it with love because we all have neurosis. I think Taylor has achievement syndrome and she's probably not aware of it. She has to achieve to astronomical levels because she's looking for something outside of herself that will finally prove she's enough. There's always a new record to break, right? Remember in Miss Americana how she recounted winning for 1989 (was it album of the year grammy?) and how she felt empty because there was no one to share it with? It's easy for her to believe that was it when a healthy relationship was always out of her reach. (We can see through her songwriting that her vision of love has always been highly idealized. She worships love like a False God.) What's changed between now and then? She ran away with her lover for awhile (I'm positive she was sure the missing piece was finally found). Six years later, the piece is still missing because it's an inside job!
There's a difference between wanting to continue to learn and grow (making new music, her newfound interest in directing) and achieving for the sake of feeling enough. Either way, we benefit off her creative stamina! When we start to lean toward this "praying to your greed" territory, I get a little nervous, too! I think sometimes she can't see the forest for the trees when it comes to success and greed. We also can't forget how driven she remains to achieve a level of power that will one-up her rich and powerful enemies. But Taylor has a righteousness that I hope continues to prevent her from turning as greedy as the enemies she enjoys crucifying. Let's hope she keeps her side of the street clean!

Shes just putting out albums, songs and going on tour as usual? Her growing fan base is whats causing these records being broken it is not something she can really plan for. Absurd to make a psychological analysis of her based on this. Why does she have to be held accountable for everything all the time, no one else has to? She has been so god damn good.

@@johanabanana2 she’s talking about dumb VIP tickets, re-recordings, crappy merchandise, etc
She’s good at business with her promotions and marketing and tries very hard to do her best.
Taylor cared about her dating history and decided to be single during 1989 and proved her independence and success but eventually wasn’t satisfied bc she didn’t have a man?
She was another level successful and had a huge group of friends and family who were thrilled for her but she admitted to feeling dependent on someone else to feel validated
She thinks of awards and nominations as the most important part of her career but it really isn’t. She’s blind to materialism
She won’t believe some albums are great bc they didn’t win a Grammy. She ignored Speak Now and Evermore because they didn’t get her much notice but they are AMAZING 🤩

What’s so insane to me is, from a business perspective, it’s insane for Taylor NOT to take this opportunity to do exactly what she wants by addressing Ticketmaster. Taylor wants to be known for her legacy in music, her breaking of records, her impact on the industry and how she single-handedly changed it. Her taking on ticketmaster, even if she has to build a platform for ticket selling herself, maybe even alongside other industry leading artists collaboratively, which she has hundreds of millions to easily do so herself regardless, would FOREVER go down as one of the biggest moments in music history and her legend status would be solidified golden. Along with the re recordings, Apple Music, Spotify contract, this would be her thank you to fans of MUSIC, not just her own and her peers. For someone who talks about respecting art so much. THIS is the thank you that fans of music in general would never forget, that your peers will forever know you for, and the exact thank you that us fans who’ve lined her pockets for years and supported her deserve. This is exactly what she needs to distance herself from the capitalist machine she’s becoming known as. For someone so intelligent, who’s been thrown around by the industry herself, her not seeing that is honestly shocking. Someone @TreePaine.

    • @lfior
      @lfior Год назад +30

The thing is, Taylor doesn't actually care about small artists and art as much as she says she does..her obsessive vinyl selling strategy has put SO many other artists on hold for their own vinyl production because Taylor is taking up all that space, just to make more money (nobody needs four vinyls to make a clock, that's the most blatant cash grab there is). She wants to break records when it's not too much effort to do so and makes her more and more money. Creating her own platform would be actual business work which she probably doesn't want to do because she can make so much money just by exploiting the existing system as much as possible. Perhaps it's also not feasible, but what is definitely feasible is for her to ask for better terms for her tour and therefore also for other artists..and she hasn't done that.

It's an interesting idea, but I would imagine there's more to it. TM is almost a monopoly, making it hard to get a share of the market. The venues has contracts they need to follow, and I wouldn't be surprised if there’s something in her contract prohibiting her from competing. And if there isn’t, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes, and if she is currently planning on taking them on, it wouldn't be very wise to speak up about before she's ready to pounce.

EXCEPT that your hot take is 100% bullshits. She can bend down spotify, apple music and master dispute of her label to her will simply because they are not MONOPOLY. If those corporates refuse her ultimatum, she still has a choice to go for another streaming services or record labels. The thing with ticketmaster is that they create an ALMOST MONOPOLY for live events so Taylor has literally no choice but to agree to work with them. If she refuse, she CANT do tour in stadiums across the USA cos most of them OWN by TM. Educate yourself and STOP ATTACKING Taylor for this issue. You all should directed the hate to TM.

I dont think taylor is money hungry to that degree to be exact. I dont think shes doing this for the money but instead for the validation, legacy, prestige and respect of breaking records. This is already in retrospect but it was recently reported that she donated like 13.45 or something percent of her own money as bonuses for her crew as a thank you. I dont think she cares for the money itself, she cares that that money is the current symbol of success and talent. in her eyes the more money she makes the more talented she is and the better the tour is.

John Oliver did an excellent piece on Ticketmaster a few years ago making a lot of the same great points. I agree that anti trust legislation will come (it’s one of the few bipartisan issues in the states). But yes, if Taylor just refused to tour unless Ticketmaster agreed to some basic precautions they would certainly have acquiesced. Side note-Pearl Jam is my husband’s favorite band not in the least because they do try to make getting tickets to their shows as accessible as possible. We were able to buy tickets from a fan who couldn’t make it back in 2018 for the Missoula MT show. They were nosebleeds but it was still a lot of fun. My eras tour ticket buying experience: In presale I sat in the queue for hours while everything glitched up and ticketmaster paused the queue and whatnot, only to get in and see the astronomical prices and VIP seats like…. everywhere, not just the front. I grabbed the first seats I could, went to checkout, only to see the insane fees. So i went back and then watched each seat disappear before my eyes. It was so annoying but also kinda hysterical as each little bubble of a seat greyed out right before i clicked on it. Luckily, I was able to do the capital one presale the next day. Waaaay less people in that line (plus I was able to have multiple tabs open for 3 different dates in the same city, so I just went with whichever line moved the fastest!) but still error messages all over the place. I clicked on different seats maybe 30 times and kept getting an error message that they “couldn’t complete my request on this device.” Finally it worked and I had to just swallow the insane ticketmaster fees BUT I was lucky to get non-VIP floor/field seats. Insane. I don’t know how it happened. I was ready to give up.
HOWEVERRRR no one should have to open a new certain kind of credit card or nearly max out their credit just to get these tickets. For the fans. These people are clearly not the fans and it’s obvious what their intentions are and the presale was supposed to be for the fans. That’s where it hurts. I think the longer Taylor is silent, the more the pressure builds for her to offer something extraordinary to fans in her response. Like, if she’d logged on day of, she could have gotten away with “I’m sorry this has been frustrating, unprecedented demand, we’re working as hard as we can to resolve this and make the process better”. Now, she actually has to *do* something.
Given there’s been murmuring from US politicians about breaking up the Ticketmaster/Live Nation monopoly, I’m wondering if part of Taylor’s response will be sponsoring or directing fans to support legislation which will help improve artists and fans’ experience with live events.

Thank you so much for posting this video! I always love your commentary. I was personally in the queue for my entire work day and never made it to actually pick seats. The friend I’m going with luckily got in after 6 hours, but we spent twice our budget and seats kept getting scooped up. I’m lucky to have gotten tickets but it’s ridiculous that other veteran Swifties didn’t. I really think Taylor and her team need to address this issue. The whole thing was embarrassing and disappointing honestly.

I can’t believe how everything has unfolded and I appreciate your thoughts on the situation. I ended up getting a really good lower bowl seat for $265 after fees, but only because my friend’s mom was one of the very lucky few that breezed through the queue and was able to check out with our tickets within 20 minutes. I on the other hand was stuck in the queue with 2000+ in front of me the entire time and am sure that all of the reasonable tickets would have been gone by the time I made it through. So grateful that I’m able to go, but it definitely makes it harder to be excited when many of my friends got screwed over :(

I feel like an important aspect of the reputation pre-sale system was that Taylor took a TON of heat for that. I actually thought it was a thing Swifties hated, because I was exposed to it through articles and such that called it greedy and that taylor was money hungry and exploiting her fans. Maybe that’s also why she didn’t use it again

Do we think Taylor will be at the AMA's on Sunday? She's up for quite a few awards, and since she's been making a lot of award show appearances lately I would kind of assume she'll be there? If she is, and hasn't addressed all of this yet, I just wonder what that will be like...
I just can't see how Taylor or even her PR team think it's a good idea to remain totally silent on this! Like, it seems like a bad PR move to NOT say anything. Even worse move to have Taylor Nation continue to post accolades and... ANOTHER REMIX!! You can't make this shit up. 😂 😭
I think you're right in reserving full judgement until this has had a little more time to play out. For all we know they could be working on a way to rectify this situation. But the silence, and now cancellation of the GP sale with no good explanation is not helping matters.
Great analysis as always! You always do such a great job at breaking it down and ELI5!

it’s the way taylor replied to that cover of anti hero on twitter on the day of presale and COMPLETELY ignored swifties’ struggles and complaints about presale prices and service 🙄. she clearly had some sort of voice in this and she really has to speak out about it. if she did accept ‘dynamic pricing’, i’m sorry to say that is just disgraceful and hurtful to the fans. the majority of fans just do not have the money to pay for $300 on a ticket; it js outrageous. taylor even posted the tour video mentioning how she wants to see us all again…well, that doesn’t seem as likely anymore. i think what taylor really needs to do is to make a statement on instagram saying that service fees should be reimbursed to affected swifties, and that she should add extra dates to accommodate the fans who missed out, also calling out ticketmaster’s unethical and misleading service. she is one of the biggest artists (if not the biggest) in the world and it’s shocking how silent she is in this situation. i am sure she really does care about us, and perhaps there is litigious side to this which prevents her from speaking out. i am hoping that a statement will be put out soon - it will be terrible and shamed upon if she doesn’t. this is in no way of me attacking taylor, i am just saying what i think is best for her to do as of right now. as an international fan, i believe this is right, and i really hope that international dates and ticket purchasing does not have this same kerfuffle.

I agree 100%, as I was unable to secure tickets to Day 1 in Chicago, IL, even though I logged on and had a verified account and purchased tickets to Rep Tout as well. Each time I selected seats, I got a messaged stating Ticketmaster was trying to secure the seats for purchase, to only be beat by another purchaser. During the Rep Tour, getting "BOOSTS" required fans to actually watch videos, purchase merch, and other selected tasks to increase their spots in the purchasing line, and this eliminated many of the "bots" and scalpers trying to purchase tickets ahead of actual fans. This time around, scalpers, using the same HIGH SPEED COMPUTERS and SOFTWARE that stock speculators use, were able to get split seconds ahead advantage in securing the best seats ahead of fans who were using regular computers and software. It is the scalpers split second advantage, so similar to the speculative stock traders, that beat ALL swifties to the punch. Scalpers, probably thousands of them, will use this advantage at each venue and then turn around and sell those tickets on secondary market. The use of supercomputers, which give stock traders and scalpers a split second advantage over ALL others, needs to be addressed. On a different note, here in the states, we allow pure capitalism, and many different companies are perceived to price gouge and have unfair practices. Tesla, Hummer EV's, Yeezy shoes, Jordan's all have angry fans who have stories of sky high markups, but it is all allowed. Foot Locker shoe stores have store managers who hoard Jordan shoes and then resell them before actual customers can see and purchase them in store...all allowed, everyone knows this, it continues. Tesla EV's are being bought and reselled $20k above purchase price, so on, so on. I can't stress this enough, it is the use of supercomputers and their given split second speed advantage of securing seats (like with Ticketmaster), or buying stocks( on the open market before all others) that must be addressed to give all purchasers a chance.

I also think the boosts only helped fans get a better chance at presale access and not the actual queue. It seemed to me that boosted fans with presale access were given codes for the original tour dates and those had the longer queues. It seemed if you were granted presale access to the newly added dates, you got through the queue much quicker and there was more availability.

Now I’m scared I’m not going to get any tickets because of this quote on ticketmaster
“Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow's public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been cancelled.”
It almost sounds like only verified fans will get tickets 🤷🏻‍♂️ doesn’t sound like public tickets will even come back, or suggest that there will be a solution and they are working on it… really pissed 🤦🏻‍♂️

I’ve grown a little tired of fans who were lucky enough to secure tickets to many (>2) shows complain that “they’re not the problem, scalpers are”. And it’s just like….. look, no one fan is to blame for the concert culture of going to multiple shows- there’s a history of that with Taylor’s concerts, and these fans would have bought multiple tickets before fully realising what happened to other fans. There are certainly bigger villains in all this than fans going to many shows, but at least try and *acknowledge* that multiple show culture has contributed to this mess. And maybe read the room before asking fellow fans, many of whom had far worse presale experiences, to assuage your guilt that you had better luck and/or were more ruthless in your approach.
I also don’t think it’s as clean cut an issue as many seem to be implying- this situation isn’t divided into diehard Swifties and professional scalpers. I think there have been a lot of fans who purchased more tickets than they needed (out of panic, miscommunication with friends or whatever) and then realised they could recoup the cost of the show they really want to keep/try and make some good money by reselling.
I don’t mean to make it seem like I think this is all the fans’ fault of course- imo Ticketmaster are by far the most at fault by not managing codes, boosts and website traffic properly, and Taylor/UMG should have done much more to de-incentivise reselling as well as be more transparent/ethical with VIP packages.

Apparently in some states there was not even a place to input codes for the first few hours, so. If you had access to the link for the queue you could just get tickets regardless of a code. Also I was given a code so I queued immediately and after about four hours I was kicked to the back of the queue. At that point I heard the prices were in 5he ultimate thousands for nosebleeds, so I decided to just log out.

I'm a new swiftie and know NOTHING about business (or Taylor's past ticket sales) but even I was sitting there in the queue for 4 hours thinking the following:
    - why didn't they do one state per day, less traffic on the site.
    - people who got a boost should have had a time frame. example - boost would be 9am and no boost/just presale code would be 10am.
    - we should have entered our access code just to get IN the queue.
    - since there were 6 tickets max per person, they should have anticipated the amount of codes x 6. (that's how many seats should be available)
    - all tickets should be non-transferable so resellers wont bother. if someone cant go to the concert, they get refunded, ticket goes back on sale
    - also to prevent scalpers, attach tix to the last 4 digits of the credit card. make them MATCH to get concert entry
With how famous & successful she is, I'm sure she could have played a bigger role in this ESPECIALLY when I heard fans say the Rep tickets were so easy. The only way I can see Taylor not being responsible for anything is if he was a new artist and it was her first concert. She has been in the game way too long for this to happen. If Rep was so much smoother, she should have done it the same way.
