  • You have been using your wide angle lenses wrong, today we look at how they were used in some of the most influential films in history, what are the best options for you, and finally how can you achieve that Hollywood look with your own wide angles. This video was a bit different from the usuals, but I really enjoyed editing this piece together! Thank you all for watching, and I appreciate each one of you! (also I know I messed up the directer of The Revenant, it is Alejandro G Iñárritu.

    Coming from a skateboard filming background I always find it funny when people talk about fisheye/wide angles as if it’s some revelation. No disrespect to the video you done some great examples for people who are learning

    • @maxwellcaincreative
      @maxwellcaincreative  3 месяца назад

      I definitely agree, I think that it has been a staple for skate videography for ever, but I would say that the wide angle aspect is newer to cinematography. This is mainly because the wide or ultra wide angles were always super expensive especially if they have no distortion, but I agree that it has almost overlooked the skate community who has been doing it for decades. I really liked your perspective on this.

    Great vid man, I just picked up the Sony 16-35 GMII again, and I’m really happy to have this focal length again. Have you checked the new Laowa 10mm f2.8 No distortion lens? That one looks absolutely amazing and I might get my hands on that one in the future to get even a wider field of view!

    • @maxwellcaincreative
      @maxwellcaincreative  3 месяца назад

      Thank you Kaan! The 16-35 is also such a beast, it is like the 12-24 but I would say it's a little less obnoxious lol. And yes the Laowa 10mm is definitely a wild lens, probably would have got that if it was out when I got my wide angle. But, if you ever use the Laowa hit me up and let me know how it was my insta is maxwellcaincreative, would love to connect on there! Your RUclips looks great btw aha

    Dope video man, I've been shooting on a 16mm (aps-c) for short form content for the past few months and I'm vibing with it heavy 🔥

      @maxwellcaincreative  3 месяца назад

      Thank you man, and that is such a fire combo. I noticed that the wide angles really look nice for short form bc they are just super immersive and almost make it look a bit more like an iphone so they blend well on tiktok or reels.

    i bought the tokina cine atx 11-20 and its super rad, barely any distortion. but its for super 35 sensors. 100% recommendation

      I will definitely have to look into this lens, I haven't heard of it but I know tokina makes bangers, and 11-20 such a good focal length.

    I got Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero-D ... I do not use it often, but it the lens I would never sell ... I think "Enter the Void" death and moving above scene has been shot on wide lens like that.
    I like this laowa for top down shots ....

    • @maxwellcaincreative
      @maxwellcaincreative  3 месяца назад +1

      Broo that lens is so killer, it is definitely one of the best wide angles because it has 0 distortion, it is honestly like the 12-24mm but no autofocus. I also am a huge fan of that scene, and I will definitely think about implementing my wide angles for top downs, because I haven't really ever done that. Do you think the Laowa is one of the best options?

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech 3 месяца назад +1

      @@maxwellcaincreative It's not that it has zero distortion, but close to zero :D.
      But there is lately Laowa 10mm F2.8 zero-D for FF. And it even has AF for some mounts.
      Haven't got my hands on it yet.
      I've done some top-down shots with Laowa 12mm and they are crazy. A bit of a action cam look, but you can convey certain mood of loneliness or isolation with such shot.

    • @maxwellcaincreative
      @maxwellcaincreative  3 месяца назад

      Ohh I get you, and yes I saw that lens looks like a beast, autofocus is always super nice especially when shooting at something like f2.8. But if you end up getting the 10mm def hit me up on insta and let me know how it is!!

      This lens is such a beast, if I hadn't purchased the 12-24 I definitely would have gotten that one, it has like 0 distortion and it can go down to 1.8, so a very very good option.

    A cheap alternative is the Zeiss Flektogon 20mm. It's a vintage lens so it has no autofocus, but the image is great, and it has almost no distortion. I got mine for 80$

    • @maxwellcaincreative
      @maxwellcaincreative  3 месяца назад +1

      I have never heard of this lens, but I just looked it up and watched some videos on it. It looks so good, I love that it has the vintage feel but it doesn't have a ton of distortion, so it is still crisp. Also $80!? that is a steal much better than the price of more modern ones.
