- Thinking of getting an ultrawide lens for your youtube show? Think again. Most youtubers go with the 16-35mm f2.8 or 15-35mm f4 type lenses for full frame. Rethink that decision.

You are into the 85mm f/1.2 now? Careful, before long you will be taking us to a lake and hiding it.
Please see Lucy Liu's ferret impression (to John Cleese) in 'Charlie's Angels II: Full Throttle'
Wide angle is more intimate because I can see all the dysfunction in your apartment and I feel like I’m there.
I know nothing about lenses but now I want to pet an ultra wild raccoon. Thanks!
I soldered my ultrawide lens to my camera so I'd never take it off.

The thing to do is light the room perfectly one time, then use a greenscreen to show the room perfectly lit and clean. Then you don't have to worry about it any more.
But what about the face
@@faddad101Overhead lighting is easy and effective.
There's a quality about 85mm headshot that bugs me to the same degree as ultra-wide does. 35mm or 50mm is where I don't get distracted by the distortion.
Outstanding! I had no idea before, and even less now. Thank you for what you do. ❤
One Lens to rule them all, One Lens to find them, One Lens to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them!
if you're buying a wide angle, buy a cheap one first, get over using it, realize you hate it then give it to an enemy.
I bought a 16mm whatsitsname lens... it might be good for taking class of 2024 shots... the whole class... other than that.
I don't believe all these years I hadn't subscribed to your channel. RUclips recommended may be whole your videos. And I've watched hundreds of them. Just now I realized that I hadn't subscribed, so I just have subscribed, means wide angle worked. I felt closer :P
Saw your bereavement video on the other channel. Best wishes to you and your small family.
Thank you!
That racoon story had me choking on my Doritos and had me in mind of Primus’s Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver :)
Best line of the video…”How do you source it?” I’m still laughing!
Hey Kasey, great video! I’ve been using a wired lavalier mic with my phone for vlogs, and it’s super convenient! You’re the only person I’ve seen that vlogs with a wired mic. So simple, lightweight, no batteries. Thank you!
As the president of the 600mm vlogging club. I welcome your embrace of longer focal lengths 😅
(In your best Maximus impersonation) “Are you not entertained?!?”
I moved the dial on my EVF diopter and the wide angle lens is the only way I can be certain at least SOMETHING is in focus. I could try moving the dial again, but it is Thursday.
On a side note, we have that exact rocking chair. Ok, that's my news.
Wide angle is perfect for depicting otherworldly or uncomfortable scenes, or like, Jim Varney trying to renovate your home. RIP you legend.
Appreciate the reappearance of rat-boy.
When filming while sailing, going in a car, or in otherwise cramped situations i find ultra wide like my sony 11mm 1.8 super useful. What I almost never do is shoot photos with it, the widest lens I use for photo is the sony pancake 20mm 2.8 (for apsc) and the batis 25 (apsc)
WIDE ANGLE IS
GREAT FOR ACTUAL.
DRAMATIC PRESENTATION LIKE
ACTORS WITH EACH OTHER AT A TABLE ETC. They HAVE a
Purpose. NOT FOR
RAT BOY BLOG.
Wide angles are used in film-making. Stanley Kubrick was quite keen on them. My response would be that wide angles are overused and misused so try to use a normal lens first. If you absolutely can't, then whip out the wide angle.
I shoot parties in confined places so wide is the most practical.
I used to use a 17-35 and took 95% of my pictures at 17mm but the distortion required tweaking in post. Then got a 20mm prime and it’s working just fine for me (and way less ratty) plus it’s way lighter than the zoom.
Now you're joining your idol preferences. Full toneh
I started thinking I loved long lenses because of the 3D pop, realized longer felt more fancy and cinematic, thought that too long felt stuffy and cliché, and now I use 35mm-75mm the most, between S35 and full frame
I started with the 85mm street photography. Then Jason Vong puts out a video about it. It was my secret weapon while everyone else is walking around with the crappy wide angle lens. 😂
Goofy lenses for goofy people. Either with a wide, normal, or telephoto lens, you always manage to make very valid, educational content in a goofy, entertaining manner. That's one of your gifts, our friend. Just keep bringing us this awesome funny show in whatever focal length you see fit. You're still our favorite online camera guy. 😂
Listen Kasey, stop giving ratboy a hard time, he’s just trying to live his best life. Your depiction of ratboy is hilarious, and I hope to see him more in upcoming videos. ❤
I love the 85mm look, it's my personal fav as a taking lens for a 2x anamorphic setup, as much as a pita it is I find it's still worth the trouble, depending what you're filming of course.
People misuse wideangle lenses to cheat on the photographic process. As the wide angle lens gets almost everything in the frame, there is no need to compose the shot or make any decisions on framing. The one use case I would support is vlogging because anything else is just unworkable.
I think because there is more in a wide angle shot it‘s even harder to compose.
@@annor5725 Nope. Composing is deciding what should be in the frame and what should be outside. With a wide angle lens, everything is in the frame so there is no choice, no decision and no photography.
@@audioupgradesExactly why good wide angle compositions are few and far between..
It’s so easy to fall into mediocrity with wide angle, causing those who are experienced and value their craft to simply not take the shot instead.
Lenses with longer focal lengths are easier to work with, precisely because one has more leeway in terms of composition. And since more people use them, they too tend to easily fall into mediocrity.
There's a reason why film SLRs usually sold with a 50mm lens and why a digital camera kit lens nearly always includes 50mm.
Wide angles can be ok sometimes but it’s easy to over-do it. I personally like 35mm also 40mm is charming. My sister has a crush on rat boy.
I love my 15 macro but I'm surprised it's not scratched to hell. It can focus down to stuff touching the front element
All focal lengths have a place. These are tools. You use them effectively.
Wide angle is actually good for adding stuff to your scene in post such as overlays, links, etc. so you're not covering your face. News channels use a wide perspective for this very reason as well as having breathing room in the scene.
Wide angle is good for humans if you're not all in their grill.
News channels don't use wide angle.
@@eto2352 Let me delete this other comment b/c I'm coming off as an ass hole.
Can you get a wide angle shot regardless of the lens focal length?
If you can answer that question, you'll understand what I was saying.
@@dct124 🤡 think about what you just wrote. I'll get my 300mm "wide angle" lens.
@@eto2352 dude just because you don't understand how distant and angle of view work, doesn't mean you gotta get uptight.
@@eto2352 Here's a nice beginners instructional video to understanding how a lens works.
Also most news channels use a ln 18-35mm lens equivalent. 35mm being the narrowest focal length for wide angle.

I'm not going to be an ass hole on this man's channel after the passing of his mom. Take the advice, and do with it what you please. Based on the dumb like like I got from the initial comment, either we're all incompetent and you're some superior being or, just maybe you misunderstood/misinterpreted what I said. Be on your Marry way to your next photography gig, job, or whatever you like doing.
Of all things for content creators, autofocus + wide angle was kind of the most unnecessary thing. If I’m that close to the camera, I don’t really need autofocus because I can actually reach the lens. Now throw on that 85mm and good autofocus is an absolute necessity unless your arms are 20ft long. Surprised with the rise of incredible autofocus, the wide angle look has still maintained its RUclips prominence. We need more 300mm vlogs.
Thank you for you opinion. 👌 I will continue to use my ultra-wides.
we need more ratboy nose-vlogs
I stand by my sigma 1.4 16mm. When I kiss the glass to the fish tank I capture epic aquarium shots with no need for fiddly cdl crap
Is the raccoon urine of good quality? I was thinking of using it on my macro lens.
Although I don't have a wide angle lens, I think it would help me stay in the frame as I can't sit still.
I cried too, but I only saw that clip. Please post a link to the entire movie and I'll get my box of tissues.
I agree, most times i kinda hate wide angle lenses.
I know everyone says you need them for landscapes but I find myself gravitating to longer focal lengths even in landscapes too. I just really don't like the look of distorted overly stretched foregrounds.
Architecture, real estate and interior design are where wide angles shine and even then detail shots are still more interesting.
Just returned my Fuji xf23. I just didn't like the 35mm field of view at all. 50mm fov is my minimum, 85 the sweetspot, with one excpetion; fisheye lenses. (This is for photography, I don't do video)
I would have bet my whole life on that door hitting the chair. I'm a dead man now and everyday is a gift.
lol i don’t know why we all sought after wide angles in photography and filmmaking like 20 years ago we bought every wide angle imaginable, just versatility maybe. but you’re right, now we’re like who cares if they can’t see your ceiling fan. we watched one terrence malik film and we think we need that versatility but turns out kurosawa had the right idea
5 min and 34 seconds into this and I am crying too.... from laughing so hard....LOL. Thanks!
Great for tight space architectural photography and videography.... Even with profound parallax distortion.
I bought plenty of ultra wides and never settled, until a fixed 20mm f1.8.
Microphone sounds awesome. Don’t change
Ratboy for PM!
We need more rat faces on the interweb. Rat faces are the new cowbells.
i don’t go any wider than 35 on the FF… practically ever. Never liked the perspective, oddly except when getting close to dogs🤣
I'm thinking you could make a box office thriller starring Ratboy. LOL! I get it, mixing it up keeps things fresh. After 10 years you need to find things that keep it interesting and fun. Have a rockin' day!!
Rat boy now needs to be in meetings...
make the next video outside with only 600 mm f6.3 and lav mic
I’m waiting for Ratboy vs J. Swizzle!
"Rat Boy" is a star in the making!
Dang... I just bought a 28mm 1.8 G for my old Nikon DSLR cameras today. I don't know why I wanted to shoot a wide focal length on my morning photo walks. I should have ask you first.
Literally watched your Sony 14 MM 1.8 GM review yesterday, which you've uploaded probably 2 years ago, and now we are here... people change, and that's okay
11:43 Kacey on crack
I have an ultra wide adapter on my 16mm lens and it's the very best lens I have. The most creative lens I own. Background? Look around for what's called COMPOSITION. LEARN ABOUT COMPOSITION... AND LIGHTING. WIDE ANGLE REQUIRES IMAGINATION AND DON'T GET TOO CLOSE TO A FACE.
Hello from Australia
Touch of Evil w Orson Welles
Some of the greatest WA shots ever
The only wide angle I would use is a action camera vlogging. Other than that 28mm maybe but for sure 32mm 60mm 112mm only
Only one person is brave enough to purposefully show off Ratboy. I think you need to make a movie about where Ratboy comes from.
Wide angles that people accept over time changes. Long ago, the 50mm was king. Then 35mm became popular (Julia Trotti's favorite). But today's generation is used to cell phones, which are effectively about 28mm FF equivalent. Even wider angles seem fairly normal unless the subject is too close to the lens. So wide lenses are fine if used in a way that doesn't produce goofy stretching. Even goofy stretching can be fun if used occasionally. But like anything else, we can get bored of it. The most glamorous look is from longer lenses (85mm to 200mm) but those are hard to use for things besides talking heads. Max Headroom days are in the rear view mirror now, for an entire production. So I guess there's a time and a place for everything. That's why they sell both long and short lenses.
FX30 With a FE 50MM is my liking right now, and its a cheep Sony lens/kit lens. SEL50F18F/2
I put a 50mm on my 90D to try. You can see every hair, freckles... You get the nice background blur "Tony" but too much detail for me.
Came here to learn about lenses. Nearly wet myself.
Nikon has solidified its position as the undisputed frontrunner in the wide angle lens market, especially with their outstanding Nikon large format wide angle SW lenses. Furthermore, Nikon provides a wide range of outstanding wide angle medium format lenses, such as the Plaubel Makina W67. Furthermore, Nikon has firmly established its position as a frontrunner in the wide angle category for 35mm cameras. Nikon's wide angle and various format capabilities are unmatched, giving them a significant edge over other brands. This is due to Nikon's unique approach of designing and building everything optically in-house, a practice that sets them apart in the photography industry.
Glad this works for you but given the infinite variety of subjects and artiistic treatments of the, I seriously doubt if your remarks have universal application. My 10-16 WA is terrific inside cathedrals.
😅 always a giggle but great info thanks for sharing 👍
Looks good, whats the problem with this wide lens?
The Sony 40 F2.8 G is a sweet focal length. Dignity in a compact size. It’s no Zeiss.
for your next q&a can you discuss your color grading work flow
My 20mm F1.8 S Nikon Lens is Essential for my Milky Way Photography.. Extra Wide Angle needed for Architecture and Real Estate photography
Nikon sucks bro.
Could I vlog with my 24mm AF-D screw focus lens on the D780 that I'm going to buy?
16mm is the only wide angle that doesn't exist to use for RUclips... full frame
So do you forgive the Sony ZV1 for not being so wide? I remember that was your main gripe with that camera. I have it and I think the wide end is fine enough(even with active stab), really like that camera. I have never liked the super ultra wide look, I thought Sony nailed it on ZV1.
I had to "watch" this one with the monitor off. So, of course, I didn't believe Rat Boy was a real rat until the sniffing at the end.
"The fifty film naa miii zeiss" is an important lens
Framing is not everything. Depending on what you shoot you can arrange things and the lighting in front of the camera.
wide angel in super 8 film looks great
I think I understood this video? Wide is bad, but is good. Kasey changes his mind. The return of Ratboy! Racoon urine and Zebras on the face? At some point I think my mind shut down.
Nah do more vids on the 10mm close up that shit’s hilarious
Raccoon urine … oh how do your source it? LMAO
I think close up wide angle is a look that makes people watch because it distorts reality.
Now this is quality content!
I am solo creator , and I am fan of wide angle lens . 🙏🙏
Just in time for the new Laowa 10mm prime!!!

Racoon Urine goes on sale at the local 7/11... tonic to cure all ailments
Man what did you talk about? I was in awe of your shirt the entire time.
Racoon urine is last years thing, today, you really really need to know about the miracle of the urine from a opossum.
I have been wondering for years what was behind that door. Eureka its a closet!
Photographers are lazy. They use ultra wide and 3D to show you other peoples houses they wish they could live in but never will because they don't have a real job and sometimes get paid - then there was the time when I was sure to get paid but no they sold the house before I could get the photos to them and it hurt my bottom - line.
Is that yet another good re-enactment Ratboy? Good video, oh those colors huh? I can smell those zebras poppin'. The sound was unusually stable today. Good work. Everything was porridge in the middle - just right. May the light of the day make you skitter. Peace.
I hate my nifty fifty since I need to back up so far to get the shot. I'm always backing away from my subject. 20mm is perfect for most of my shots. Nice job finding all of that old footage with examples of each focal length. I can't even find the video of my own wedding! Then, I would be able to prove that a real woman actually married me.
Fashions change. Next could be rat pee and macro lens so you have to stay still to keep your mouth in focus (so people can lip read you).
"They know you read".. lol. When I see a bookshelf with a sets of books (ie multiple all the same size and colour), then I know they don't read. Yours has one green set, which I suspect you have not read, but the rest look legit.
