Great video, dude. The last point is so spot on. Once you start planning your shots and thinking more like a director than a videographer is when your work really starts to shine.
Soooo good brotha, really enjoyed this one! Really good tips, I think my personal favorite was about the medium shots, I feel like I fell victim to that without even noticing, a lot more close ups and ultra wides coming now for sure Thanks Max!
Love the tips that you are giving. Sometimes you focus so hard on other things you don’t notice stuff that could fix your whole shoot. Such as different shots(wide, medium, close) since you might have great lighting and the shot is perfect but it’s just another medium! Keep it up Max!
Thank you Marcel. And you are so right, we have been there where we shoot something and think it was the perfect and most epic shot. But, in the edit it just blends in and is another medium..But not anymore, especially when you direct a film soon....
Maxwell (cool name!), Since I have been learning about filming over the past few years there is one thing for certain I NEVER do. I always speak positive of other people within the space or say nothing at all. Sometimes I hear (bet you do as well), "that film or movies sucks." Fact is, it just might have. A key for me, is the work, the production, often lots of work goes into a person or people producing something. Then in a matter of seconds someone says something not so cool about the work. I just always want to mindful of that! I enjoyed your video, liked your ideas and thanks so much for making, taking the time and for posting. Continued success in your awesome journey.
Thank you so much for the comment. And I agree that it doesn't matter what other people think as long as you know what you did and you had a reason to do it.
love this and love your style! the shots outside of the convenience store are sick! may i ask if they were filmed on two different lenses? or just at different focal lengths/angles?
This is a great question, I used to color my work in adobe and if you watch the Under Armour spec I did a while ago, that was edited and colored in premiere. So, there is definitely lots of potential in Premiere, but for me I was very interested in node trees as well as powergrades. I don’t believe you can do powergrades in Premiere, these are basically node trees you can download, almost like a lut where you can edit every single aspect of it. I was also very interested in film emulation, and again this was done by using a powergrade. So overall you definitely don’t need Davinci. However, I would say the Davinvi is a much faster and easier way to color your videos, but it is a big hassle if you are constantly going from adobe premiere to Davinci resolve for editing and coloring. If it were me, I would personally switch to Davinci because it is a very good editing software and I think it is better than Premiere, so the color is also an added bonus to the whole process.
Dude -- you are doing really well, and providing great tips. Hopefully this video is a good hook for your channel and gets a bunch more subscribers who will watch your other videos .But, can I give you my notes? Take them or leave them of course. 1) Spend a little more time editing your titles and making sure that your voice over matches what is seen on screen. (I just watched the part about the waveform like three times and didn't realize what you were saying.. Fortunately I know what I'm looking at but I always try to learn from others. 2) At 4:06 or so you call the shot a close up.. Uh.. So, it depends really.. It can be a close up if your subject is the landscape which happens to have a dude in it that's looking through binoculars (although it doesn't show anything BUT the guy) so, maybe make sure your images match up with what you are saying.. Again, please don't get me wrong - your stuff is great, your advice is on the money. But the editing is not exactly supporting your message.. 3) Movement: 4:27 or so... Again - I fully agree with your message here - but it's not all that clear to a newbie (at least that's what I think.) Bottom line, have a reason for movement. Have a reason for handheld versus tripod. Handheld tends to elicit an emotion of unease - if that's what you are going for then it makes sense. If you are looking for a serene, peaceful scene then put it on a tripod. Z 4) Lighting.. Excellent - in my opinion lighting is MASSIVE in terms of getting good videos.. Good stuff - no notes! 5) Shooting with Intention! This, is, in my opinion and experience, THE most important one.. "If you can explain to someone why you did it that certain way, then that was the correct way for you to do it". Perfect statement! Exactly true! Great stuff! Good luck and I hope you do well!
Hey man, I am extremely appreciative of your feedback. And I am so happy I can have someone who wants to really help me become the best youtuber possible. As far as the titles, yes they got butchered in the export. I am not sure what happens other than when I edit position in the 1080p version and then up the timeline to 4k for export, the data of the titles doesn’t do a 1 to 1 translation. And I didn’t realize that until late after the export. But you are very correct, this was a late night type of edit, so i finished and had to post asap. And involving the close up, I agree, I was more so trying to show the variety in the same shot aesthetic, so it isn’t necessarily a traditional close up, but it is highlighting difference in framing. Which in turn helps with the shot variety. On the topic of tripod usage, I agree with you in the idea that you should have a reason for movement. My focus with this section was to help people understand that they should have tripod shots in their work just to help with pacing and breaking of the video. I have a lot of explanations on other videos on how to use movement as well as why, so I wanted this to be more of an overview on the idea of using different types of shots. However, I do agree it wouldn’t have been a bad idea to include an umbrella statement on the why. And again, I really really appreciate you even taking the time to write a comment let alone being honest and providing your opinion on my video. I hope these responses read you well, and I hope to see your comments on future videos! Thank you for being honest.
nice video as always! i have a shot i need to get in a street at night (it has streetlights) and don't know how to light the shot with minimal gear (i.e. just a tubelight) any tips?
Thank you! And that is how we actually lit the shots in front of the corner store. I would just have them stand somewhere near the street lights, so you can use some of that. Then, match the light bar and the practicals, and just mess with positioning of light bar. I would recommend holding it higher and vertical, and then putting it on the opposite side of talent so you are shooting on the shadow side. Thanks for the question!
I use Milanote now, but honestly I just used to use google slides because it is free and super easy. Just throw your images in a slides document basically. Whatever works best for you to see all of your frames. But as of now it is Milanote, and it is very useful for organizing other things like shot list, mood board, gear list all in one document.
Bro I love your video, very resourceful. I need help in creating an intro vfx of my brand name I can use for my movie with name Timlandas Concept, can you help?
Thank you so much! And not sure how much I can help haha, I have 0 experience in VFX. Hit me up on Insta, and we can talk more about it, maybe I can recommend you someone!
Ayyy let’s go, another person from Boise! Also great tutorial on color grade, composition, and planning. I know one thing I need to work on is color grading and understanding the wave forms
Haha Yes!! And thank you so much, yes the waveforms are so important, bummed the titles got messed up in this regarding that section, but there is a video I did on color that has much better explanations!
It is called Vista Vision aspect ratio, so I just shoot in 17x9 and then crop in. If you use DaVinci it is a built in crop aspect ratio, but if not you can just look up the ratio for vista Vision and choose the one for your quality!
Bro, colorists are going to get a stroke if they see that node tree 😅(mine looks the same except I don't have labels, because I think I might be a psychopath). Anyways, Great tips man!
Great video, dude. The last point is so spot on. Once you start planning your shots and thinking more like a director than a videographer is when your work really starts to shine.
Thank you man, and yes exactly, really thinking about what you're shooting is so so important.Thank you for the comment, I really appreciate it.
I’m just understanding this
Great video dude I really like it. By the way what websites do you use to find references for your video shots?
Thank you! And usually it is eyecandy, frameset, or youtube!
Soooo good brotha, really enjoyed this one!

Thank you GLF and yes bro medium shots get all of us sadly, time to break out of da barrier fr.

Motivate the talking head light from left to right and get a boom for that mic! :) Great tips.
I can never put the mic on the boom haha, i must hold it, but thank you lol!
love this and love your style! the shots outside of the convenience store are sick! may i ask if they were filmed on two different lenses? or just at different focal lengths/angles?
Thank you so so much! And yes, we shot them on the Rokinon Cinema Lenses, the left shot is on the 24mm and the right was on the 14mm!
Maxwell this is so incredible. This inspiring me to get more creative.
Comments like this mean the world to me, thank you and I am so happy you want to go get more creative.
This was great man, I’m tuned in now!
Thank you man, appreciate it so much!
you deserve more views, nice tips btw
This means a lot, thank you so much.

Thank you! And yes haha that is good, love seeing everyone continue to pursue their passion, happy you're still filming!!
is premiere or AE ok for color grading or do I have to get davinci? I'm a big adobe fan

If you are really a big adobe fan then I can suggest Adobe Speed Grade. I used it way back, and its a powerful software
