The original version of 40K was much closer to an rpg, but the focus on small, detailed units was at odds with the commercial goal of selling more models. That's why there was 'Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay' (basically a grittier version of DnD) but no 'Warhammer 40K Roleplay', as it would have been redundant at the time.

Mass Effect plus the Eisenhorn trilogy is literally sitting there for them. 1 game per 3 book arc over 10-15 years. It would be a billion dollar franchise. The question is, which studio that currently exists could pull it off? Bioware, Bethesda, Ubisoft or anything EA related are incompetent. I don't think anything under the Microsoft umbrella could do it justice. The dream would be Santa Monica. Those people are f*cking wizards. Beyond them, I don't think its possible to do something Mass Effect-esque ever again. More and more I'm starting to believe that series was a black swan event and I likely won't see something like it again in my lifetime. Maybe after the show is done, Cavill jumps into the gaming side and saves us again?

I'm not into computer RPGs so don't know how it compares with others, but while I quite liked the scene-setting and dialogue the quests all devolved into pointless meatgrinder battles against utterly unchallenging opponents that did nothing to promote optimising a team ... and then would randomly sidetrack into a hard battle that needed optimisation, often with no rhyme or reason.
There wasn't enough to do outside combat (other than wander round the multi-room planet searching forlornly for the boss battle) and while the trading system was a nice idea the execution was undercooked: other than ship upgrades, by the time you had the influence to get the bland weapons and armour on offer it was already past its sell by date.
And it could be due to bugged progression, but I ended up losing most of my supporting characters either because they never came up as options to hire (the Drukhari), the quest to get them seemed not to complete (the Space Marine), or a quest needed to keep them around seemed to be missing a finale that let me enter the boss fight (the black marketeer). I also seemed to end up in Comorragh - which took up far too much of the story - in an unintended way, with the result that I kept getting dialogue about things that had never happened.
On top of all that the final summaries were a fun idea but produced a lot of mutually inconsistent events in my story, and having completed the campaign it seems I need to do it all again to get full value from the DLC.

I'd go mad for a series of character action games in the Heresy. Limit it down to playable marines and humans and their stories, you don't get primarch povs. This helps to lessen story bloat and summarize the books for a game series.
First covering the run up and atrocity at istvann iii with some playable characters from the Sons of Horus, Mechanicum, Emperors Children and Death Guard.
The second covering the Raven Guard, Salamanders and Iron Hands in the run up and massacre at Istvann V.
The third covering the Wolves, Thousand Sons, Sisters of Silence and Custodes during the burning of Prospero.
The fourth covering the Word Bearers, World Eaters and Ultramarines in the midsts of the Shadow Crusade.
The fifth featuring the Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Nightlords touching on Signis, Thramas and the forces arrival into Ultramar.
The Sixth touching on the White Scars and Alpha Legion in Chondax and the Battle of Phal between the Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists.

I came up with a cool idea for a 40k one based on vraks and through out the story you swap between different people good and bad from cultists to guardsmen and space marines and so on to see it from different view points on how mental the siege is

If... *IF* you was to have a SM companion then it would have to be Lamenter. Because you have a solo brother picked up easily explained by them having perennial bad luck and would have gotten separated from his chapter, and being on a penitent crusade, he'd join you as a means of getting his chapter more redemption. That, with the bad luck that plagues the Lamenters, gives him character development that can be done over a good and fleshed out arc.

the one kind of game that would make bank is a crusader kings like game where you are a noble fighting for power in a hive city with Scaling power levels up to being a planetary Governor. and it could be a rogue-like as you have a random city/planet settings and deal with all the Machiavellian powers like tau, chaos cults, genestealer cults, taxes, hive gangers, the Ecclesiarch and you could start as a ganger house that gets favor and in one of many ways gain influence from the many factions in the hive city. depending on what powers you helped the control of the planet would shift towards the greater powers like Chaos with leanings for Khorn, Nurgail, undivided what have you, the imperium of man ie the Ecclesiarch, IG, Administratum, Xeno ie tau, dark eldar, genestealer cults.

I 100% get you. I remember when Mass Effect was coming out and I wanted this to be a thing SO BAD. I see a lot of comments talking about Rogue Trader and yes it has all of the core pillars you mentioned. I LOVE RT and how it presents the setting, giving players far more freedom to actually speak and deal with Aliens. Its characters and your crew mates are fantastic. You're given freedom to delegate and build your dynasty. It's got everything you could want of of a 40k RPG. It's not a particularly geared towards accessibility though. CRPG's are Niche already and it lacks that slick productions of something like Mass Effect and the streamlined skills that don't require more than a glance to understand what it does. I dread leveling up in RT for the very reason I'm going to have to read and retain paragraphs if I want to play "optimally" and balance out my party. It's a deep and rich system but I can see why people would bounce off it, hard.
As to your plot idea, I love it, though I would change a few things. First, I wouldn't use Eisenhorn if only for the simple fact his story is still going forward. The idea is sound as he's a recognizable figure but I think it would just handcuff the writers. I still love the idea of the Interrogator taking up the Inquisitors mantle, though I would keep them from being sworn in as an official Inquisitor. That way when an official Inquisitor comes, The players every deed a decision will be held in judgement. Otherwise I think its quite a fantastic idea and a game I would love to play.

To fully present the 40k universe you need a large server farm that expansion as the story grows.
This allows players to enter regardless of media whether that be PC, XBOX, Playstation.

I've always wanted a Warhammer version of Star Wars Battlefront.
Loyalist/chaos Primarchs could be the hero/villian equivalent, Guardsmen as the standard troops, Space marines as the special reinforcements, dreadnoughts as vehicles etc.

The game around Eisenhorn sounds like a great game,
I had a similar idea but instead you could choose your background (career) to have started from one of the many recruiting worlds or hive citys & either choose to be in Imperial Guard, space marine etc and work your way up in rank possibly.

  • @Ralndrath

Hmm, sounds good. One problem though, Eisenhorn is no longer seen as the main Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, he's gone rogue and considered a radical (which he definitely is) and a heretic (which is up for debate) he is wanted by the Ordo Hereticus. The PC could be his Interrogator but it'd be unofficial and complicated.

As I told you months ago, You have the talent to write a series of books that the reader is the hero, with choices to make like in the good old days, and it will sell. Just avoiding character names and GW words ownership to avoid being accused of stealing IP. Just like Grimdark Future does it.

It needs a true digital 40k recreation. Battle sector was half way there but we need all models, single and multiplayer matches, etc etc etc. 2. We need a fully built RTS mad by blizzard to replace StarCraft. 3. We need a full on RPG. Like Elden ring length rpg 4. An auto battler like
Mechabellum but all 40k units and factions would be great

    So, unpopular opinion here.
The Grimdark can severely restrict storytelling and interest if rigidly applied.
If everyone lives brutally miserable existences, works 16 hour days then gets to sleep 8 hours inna bunk by their stations, never gets any days off etc.
You cannot explore family life, recreational and other activities of the common citizenry. You cannot have bars, sports games etc.
If guard regiments demand lifelong service till death, and they see 90% casualties. Then you cannot really have veterans or former guard characters.
So its a fine balance between keeping the feel and grimdark of 40k. But having a universe where interesting things outside of war actually happen.

I love this idea. I'm.not 100% on the lore behind rouge trader (apologies) but is there a way you could have a diverse motley crewe of xenos and humans like in ME?
Could you have the exiled custodes martial artist whose been wandering the galaxy in exisle? The stubborn sarky votann mechanic? The kroot sharpshooting bounty hunter?. The wise snooty but eventualy chil eldari warlock? The tau earth caste scientist upgrading everyone's equipment? The comedic ork looking for a decent crumpin. And The human captain finding a way to align everyone's agendas, differences and goals to form a streamlined effective unit. Together they can be ready to work their way through anything the galaxy has to throw at the player?...
Or would it just a a tightly packed tin can of a ship of human/space marine zelots grunting about being thirsty to kill anyrhing that's not human in the name of the emperor for +40 hours?
