  • The 2019 Canadian Drone (RPAS) rules (which are still applicable in 2022) are complicated, but this introduction helps to explain the key rules, both for sub-250g drones like the DJI Mavic Mini/Mini 2/Mini 3 and drones over 250g like the Mavic 2 or Phantom series.
    Drone Pilot Canada is the app of choice for Canadian drone flyers! It provides the features you need to meet all the procedural requirements of the 2019 Canadian RPAS regulations. Drone Pilot is available for purchase here:

    I don't live in Canada, though I used to live there...
    This video is golden for the drone community. It makes (new) drone owners aware of the rules and guidelines.
    Just by getting a drone for your birthday or Christmas doesn't mean you can just throw the thing up in the air and start flying. It's more like getting a car (though I never had that privilege). You can't drive before knowing the rules. *A drone is not just a toy...*

    Don Joyce Thank you for the info. I will definitely consider buying your app. The issue for me is that i use both android and ipad to fly depending on the terrain and at $40 for ipad and the same for android equaling $80 + Tax it is a lot for one app. I am sure a lot of work has gone into this app and i really appreciate it but I think for many that could benefit from what it offers it is a high price in my opinion. i would suggest you consider a lower price and making it more accessible and more likely that more will buy the app. I think a lower price means more accessibility, larger number of sales and safer skies for us all. JUST AN OPINION.

    Hi Don. I was wondering if you could make a video with the steps involved from deciding to do a flight to ending the flight with already having the basic and advanced license? A live example of what you do. So for example. I want to fly today or tomorrow in this area. Step 1: Call NC. Step 2: etc. I think this would clear up exactly what someone would need to do to follow the rules. It would also show how much work is involved. Just an idea as for me, going through all the suggested videos, it seems a bit overwhelming with regards to all the work I would need to do just to go fly. I hope this makes sense.

      Hi Sizzler B. Interesting idea. The checklists I provide in both the Drone Pilot Canada app and the spreadsheet Canada Drone Pilot Logbook actually do show the step by step process to follow. Not REALLY that tough. The biggest part, in my opinion, is determining if the place you want to fly is permitted. For that, I have a Can I Fly Here? video: ruclips.net/video/rAFXw78Nnbg/видео.html

    Hey Don, Thank you so much for all this work and I can imagine all your work will pay off in many ways! In the app you offer does it show National parks as well or is the map information a repeat of the Drone site selection tool from Transport Canada. If it is a repeat it would be great to be able to overlay the other no-fly areas to make it easy for recreation pilots to easily see the areas and avoid fines and potential accidents. Thanks again

    • @DonJoyce

      Thanks Chris! The Drone Pilot Canada app does show National Parks, as well as the aerodrome and airspace areas. Other parks do not have geo data available for their boundaries, so we are unable to show them reliably. Over and above the NRC Drone Suite Selection tool, we offer contact information, checklists, procedures, flight logs, cert/reg document storage and everything else the regulations require you to follow procedurally. All in one spot.

    I just landed on this video looking for drone rules in Vancouver. I have a DJI Air 2S which is over 250g. I am still in return window and was wondering if I should get a Mini 3 Pro instead which is 249g. I am willing to get my drone registered and get a basic license but the question is, will I still need to inform the authorities know that I am flying my drone? I met a guy the other day at Stanley Park. He was trying his DJI Mini (249g) to get some sunset footage. I asked him if he got any permissions before flying and he said "no because his drone is less than 250g he doesn't need to inform anyone and because he was taking care of general safety rules". So, I was wondering can I also do that with my over 250g drone (afer registering and getting basic certification) or going sub 250g route would be a better option?

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  Год назад

      Hi Faisal! The Vancouver area is largely covered by controlled airspace, which means you would need your Advanced drone pilot license and secure Nav Drone authorization for every flight...for a drone over 250g. As such, a sub-250g drone would be a much better choice. The Mini 3 Pro is an extremely capable drone, with a great camera system. I would recommend you switch to that if you still can. But please fly responsibly! I have a video dedicated to how the rules apply to the Mini 3: ruclips.net/video/dc0KZlRmMxo/видео.html

  • @yegg14
    @yegg14 4 года назад

    Good info again. I noticed you mentioned the DJI mini which is just under the weight that you need to get a licence. This is my whole beef with transport Canada. What's the difference between a drone that weighs 249g and a drone that weighs 430g+? They both do the same thing. And you didn't mention, you have to renew your certificate in two years. How much is that going to cost. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the safety issues, I just don't agree with this exam, especially when most of it doesn't have anything to do with drones. My opinion, this whole thing with Transport Canada, and drone usage is just a money grab, by the government and all these drone schools popping up all over the country.

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  4 года назад +2

      Hi Dan...thank you! Some good news about the 2 year recency item: it may be easier than we all thought, based on a conversation with TC. I'll share in a video...clearly not urgent yet! Regarding the 'money grab', just think about the motivation: Commercial flyers, often tied to flight schools, have their business threatened with growing 'recreational' flyers. Solution: make the rules complicated to raise the entry threshold, AND sell flight schools as the 'only' way to pass the exam. Until somebody came along with some videos and an app...
