Who said anything about free? That was a External txv. Doesn’t get any easier than that. Pump the unit down, replace the valve and the dryer, Clean the condenser while you’re waiting on your vacuum. What are you they’re 60 maybe 90 minutes total and leave knowing you did right by the customer.

I live in AZ last summer Blower motor took a crap was not home evaporator was a ice ball. Thawed and replace blower motor. It was not cool enough. it needed some gas. I have never called anyone in my life to fix anything. Called a outfit out. They were so full of BS. They said I had a leak. Sent them packing. Charged me $100.00 for nothing. Went to the local AC supply house bought gauges for the 410A and a jug of juice Field Piece meter with the temp probe. Studied up and charged the unit. Been perfect for a year. This is a heat pump also so it works year round. I think the compressor vented some refrigerant out when it iced up. I know it has high low limit switch. You might be able to shed some light. The moral is 90 percent of these HVAC outfits are rip offs. That goes for most service companies. Auto repair is probably worse. My AC high side never gets over 350 when it is 110 out. I like Steve. I think he knows what he's doing but I think he goes in the John Israel mode sometimes.

The average homeowner doesn't know that a thicker filter equates to CFM restriction and whether or not they have adequate returns to feed their system. Who is going to tell them? Pro tip. Put your temp sensor before the inlet of the filter dryer. If there is a slight restriction in that dryer, pressure drops and you will get a high subcool reading.

Not sure what the outdoor ambient was but that head pressure was high and whether or not that liquid line filter drier has restrictions, TXV needs to be replaced after adjusting the TXV and still having those pressures. Call back
Quick thaw: turn fan to.on from auto and turn ac from ac to off. Takes couple hours but when airflow from vents is good. After service, return settings fan to auto and ac on ac setting.
That head pressure was sitting at 449 and did hit 450 at the end. Data plate test pressure max high side was 450 gauge. So unless that outdoor coil is plugged it has a restriction. Looks like Txv was improperly installed when it was replaced. Carrier TXVs come pre installed on the coil and pre set in the case coil box. The liquid line looks to be the same size after the TXV. That TXV outlet should be going into the distribution lines and not more line. Very poor install. I just shake my head when I see stuff like this. I agree kick the can down the road. To old to fix properly at this point. It’s probably always had to be over charged to run right and on top of all that no air flow. Great video Steve.
What would it take to improve the air return on that system? I doubt the problem is solely in that turn at the furnace, there's probably not enough return registers feeding it, either.

What he did here was overcharge the system to force more liquid into the TXV. But truth be told that is a 2003 Carrier it wont be around much longer anyways. It obviously has a bad or dirty condenser coil as well. Guys going to need a change out soon not worth putting $1200 into it.
I thought the txv always has to be inside the plenum with the coil. So the piston and txv are always on the suction and discharge lines before it goes to the coil then?

Never liked Carrier units poor quality parts hard to get and expensive! That txv will eventually crap totally out! Order a new one now so you don't get caught up with carriers forever waiting when it comes to getting parts from them because the unit will need it ! Liked that you are using a service wrentch on the valves alot of techs use pliers and round off the stems! Should have told the customer to get the cheap fiberglass mesh filters! Pleased filters of any kind will cause a lot restriction in that system! Go to Ace hardware to get them home Depot is over priced! Up to 3 times as much here in Maryland! Be tight Mama! Same here. Never liked Carrier back in the 80's. They used proprietary parts on their equipment that were expensive. Some of my customers would complain about the part prices. Carrier had brand name recognition but they were always overrated in my opinion. They did some experimental stuff to seal their evaporator tubing that led to a lot of leaks and some Carriers had aluminum spine fin coils that were hard to clean and nobody ever tried to fix a leak in them. BTW, all of the techs that I worked with used service wrenches. I have noticed that Home Depot and Lowes are really pushing those expensive and very restrictive air filters.
@@picklerix6162 I had a carrier condenser fan motor go bad and went to Carrier to get a replacement normally that motor would be about $60.00 but because of a special mounting bracket that was attached to the outside of the motor and only Carrier sold it they wanted $300.00 for it and it would take a week to get it! Fortunately the old motor was okay it was the bearing that were frozen so I knew a place that I had used before that rebuild motors! So I took the motor to them and they replaced the bearings and tested the motor and I got the motor back the next day and it only cost me$50.00! I won that round with Carrier! But I worked on another carrier condenser and was not so lucky! It was 3 years old and flat so i leak checked it and found the aluminum coil had corroded from the dog urinating on it and there was a hole in it! Talked to Carrier about a new coil this was June and Carrier told me I would have to wait until September to get a new one and would have to pay for it in advance! That was unacceptable! I ended up having to replace the condenser ! I bought a Rheem condenser to replace it! Never in my life will I ever recommend or install a carrier condenser or system ever!
If you're doing 1500 or 1900, 1" filters will choke you system regardless if it's even a 1000. For better filtering, you need to have a filter housing to hold a 20x25x5 filter. that 5" thickness is more surface area of the filter, which mean more air flow through the filter, even though the filter itself is a restriction point.
Needs a power head, you can see the dome is rusted, causes a partial (power head) charge loss=valve closes off. It will get worse as more of the charge leaks out.
I can't figure out why the outlet of the TXV isn't dripping sweat or frosted over . It makes me wonder if there is a piston installed on the coil that installer didn't know about.

Steve got the equipment working without charging a ton, or changing it out. A lot of techs wouldn't know how, or wouldn't do this. Which could mean no cooling for the customer, or their put in a tight spot for money. He has over 100k+ subs for a reason...

so you want people to use cheap filters which allow debris to cover the air handler and send impurities into the home? I have used Filtrete 1900 for over 13 years, changing them every 30 days. I had my plenum rebuilt and looked inside my air handler and it looks super clean, no dust or debris.

My TXV is just outside of the plenum/coil.
So much refrigerant it can’t expand so it’s driving the superheat down. Not good. Why no test without the filter to see how bad an airflow problem.

It’s just a nicer installation to have the unit on a pad to raise it above the surrounding grade.
