Fun Tidbit: Mok was drawn with Mick Jagger specifically in mind to voice him and do the singing parts. True, but the pedant in me is confused by what it means, since it was an archangel sent by God who turned everyone into salt, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah didn't have any kind of "power" beyond being filled with lechers and hedonists.
@@user-lb9xw4xf2q \ Lot had chose to live in the city because of how beautiful and prosperous it appeared, overlooking its depravity and choosing to follow the wealth he could gain from it. In other words he was seduced by something evil kind of what Mok references in this line. He's basically saying I have the power to make you want me even though I'm a walking red flag. Its interesting because in the scene after this line there are statues of people crumbing reminiscent of lots wife who turned into a pillar of salt after looking back at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Yeah (sigh)... So many poor fools. They have money, women (if they're men😉), power, glory, everything. But they lack love, compassion, belief in good and, well... future.
Exactly. A character can be defined entirely by their actions and reactions in the story, a villain can be fun without having to be deep and Mok is exactly that. A fun villain
I've heard people argue that his motivation for villainy is insanely petty and stupid. I would argue that that's the point. A good villain is someone that is entertaining to hate. The fact that Mok is so insanely self-important that he would murder thousands over (according to Lou Reed) two empty seats at one of his concerts just cements his depravity, which makes for a very fun villain.
God damn this movie is GORGEOUS! Why didn't it do better in theaters? Also, why not use Lou as the speaking voice for Mok, we know he's a decent actor. I guess I can't complain, Don Francks did a great job.
The music and the voices were handled quite differently. As I may have already mentioned, Jagger was originally slated [as can be seen in Mok's design] then Bowie and finally Lou Reed. From what I recall Lou came to the production fairly late in the game. Animators can't animate without lip-sync which depends on the actual recorded voices, so waiting on the musical talent would have put things too far off and we were already way behind. As for why it didn't do better in the theatres, the double-DVD set has an insert with a fairly good explanation. One of the problems we had on this production was the director was always away with the musicians so we were often left redoing work he didn't like when he returned after a 3 to 4 week hiatus. That put the production way over budget and years longer than it should have been. By the time it was in the can the people cheer-leading it with the distributors had left so nobody really cared anymore. Thanks for caring! They botched the release so badly I wrote it off. Late 1990s I started getting emails from people who were fans, which confused the heck out of me until I discovered the film had a descent rotation on late-night TV and developed a cult following. Who knew?
@@Verneandru ha! Isn’t life strange? It seems to me some of the best movies, bands, etc don’t do well in their time but develop cult followings. If I was an artist and had to pick I would much rather have a cult following than instant success. So congratulations?! 😁
Mok looks like the kind of guy who doesn't hire anyone to write anything for him. Hi - I worked primarily in story doing layouts, storyboards, designs, that sort of thing. I was actually on my way to work on Heavy Metal when Nelvana snagged me for Rock & Rule. I agree this is a better film and wish it had seen a better release than it got.
I absolutely love this artwork/animation style. Don't know what to call it, just love it. Everything in this movie fit together so well (visually, soundtrack) regardless of legitimate criticisms some may have.
Great tune and video. I remember seeing it first on the CBC in the early 80's when I was 8 or 9 years old. Never knew it was Lou Reed though. What a great surprise.
They did awesome job making the movie and the graphics i can see that they put in thier hard earn work and dedication they got the talent the heart and soul for thier artwork.
This is one of my favorite sequences in the movie, both musically and design-wise. Just wanted to share a story: When Rock and Rule originally appeared in one small movie theater in Boston, it was always sold out. Cut to the late 80's, I attended a Lou Reed concert in Boston full of fans who listened attentively to every word he spoke in between songs. During a pause, an audience member suddenly shrieked, "MOK!!!!" Lou looked very surprised, and said, "Mok?" The audience reacted excitedly, I held my breath, and for a split second, hoped that he would actually launch into the song. But of course he hadn't rehearsed it with the band, so he didn't. But I'd always hoped that Lou had realized the appreciation we all had for his work on the film that had largely gone unrecognized at that point.
The film was done 40 years ago, I've had my clips up for years and it is only now that people are taking notice. Go figure. Just goes to show that if you wait long enough eventually things get noticed.

@@tristanband4003 Exactly. Evil and Narcissistic alone just make another two-dimensional comic-book villain. Bit add, Charm, Charisma, and STYLE, and now you have someone who does not NEED to take over the world, they could convince the world to let them be in charge.
...having THOSE LIPS wouldn't hurt either.
@@andrewdreasler428 Which makes him all the more terrifying. That people would hand the world to them just if he asked is scary af.
This movie REEKS of the 80s, and I couldn’t be happier
I saw this on HBO when I was about 8 or so ... I am now 47 and NEVER forgot this song! I think that says something.
you and me both
About to turn 50 and remember when MTV had this video in heavy rotation.
Ha ha same! I videotaped it off HBO when i was 9
I like the shadowed backup singers, i like the lines too i dont know what it is but i like the casual kind of tone in this whole peice. Mok is excellent, whoever voiced him knocked it out of the park.
Lou Reed (Guitarist/Singer for The Velvet Underground) did the vocals when he song.
Just saw this movie tonight. It is CRIMINAL that it didn't earn more at the box office. All that hard work would have been for nothing if it hadn't become a cult classic.
. _"you think he's acting, but he's not"_ . Such a great, great simple line! (right, girls?)
I watched this when I was 15...then my kids and wife found and bought me the 2-disk deluxe set. Being a musician I can say it's been a life-long ambition to cover this tune and let this generation discover R&R, what a song! I'd put Mok up against Ye any day of the week.
let us all know when you release your cover!
Hes like a combination of Marilyn Manson, David Bowie and The Joker.
How could Mok look like Marilyn Manson all the TIME?! Because Jafar is the combination of Conrad Veidt, Vincent Price and Jack Nicholson as The Joker! And Lord Cedric is like The Combination of Jafar from Aladdin, Hades from Hercules, Scar from The Lion King and Tim Curry as the Dark Lord from Ridley Scott's LEGEND! Due to Jafar being based on Maleficent; Maleficent looks like Marilyn Manson's portrayal of VAMPIRELLA! Is Vampirella one of Dracula's Concubines? And do you know who Lord Cedric is?
Yah but he's better than Manson, even as a fictional character, given how much that goth shut in abuser got away with it for as long as he did, cancel worthy
I was obsessed with this movie when I was younger, like middle school. One of my older bros friends had it and let me watch it. I spent the next seven years trying to find it. I finally gave up and just now remembered it existed. Thank you RUclips!!!
@@foxopossum Sure
The guitar notes at the beginning hit you like a goddamn train and I love it
Dunno why I just randomly got this stuck in my head, but hey. Maybe my brain needed some Mok-based nostalgia.
So, thanks a lot, Mok.
He needs to hire someone else to write his lyrics.
I see why his last álbum floped.
I would like to think this was his later material that didn't do a whole lot for him 😂
Mok looks like the kind of guy who doesn't hire anyone to write anything for him. He wastes his talents on his own ego thinking everything he thinks and does is great and everyone else is wrong for speaking the truth. In other words I believe the songs were intentionally written that way to show his character.
His name is mok and his last album flopped
My name is mok thanks a lot I am a snake and I’m the big bad who makes you shake like wtf
The song and the visuals go so well together.
This character was such a highlight of this whole movie. Mok is friggin brilliant, the music + animation in this is just stellar.
I like how the final scene of Mok falling foreshadows how he literally falls down a portal to Hell when he's defeated
this movie got me back into drawing and wanting to make my own animated films i'm an aspiring filmmaker mys self and an ok artist but i want to step up my game and this was one of my influences
dornravlin try to do this as a hobby, not full time unless you have money like that
The Beatles statues crumbling before him is such an epic way to metaphorically show his ego
Wow, I've never seen this movie or heard of it until yesterday when the algorithm threw it at me... and now I can't help but keep coming back. Lou really made an ear-worm of a track this is catchy as hell.
Mok's back must hurt from carrying this movie.
Holy sh$%, this kicks major butt!!!! This thunder bass mix is savage!!!!
Yes.
...Thunder itself takes third place to this bassline (second place goes to an earthquake)!
i cannot stress enough how much i ADORE THIS SONG. when i watched this movie for the first time i legit had to pause it after this song to process how incredible it was (that may sound weird but i’m a MASSIVE music nerd, especially with 80’s-90’s music and musicals) and i legit replayed it like, 10 times with my jaw hanging open. this movie is so incredible for so many reasons but i, without a single shred of irony, consider mok to genuinely be one of the greatest animated villains of all time.
Yes, sing to us, Lou! This movie may have been weird as hell and I had no idea what was going on, but it was still fun to watch and now I've got the Transformers album. It's such a perfect day and I'm glad I spent it with you.
this is such alluring animation, its so good yet so... slimy
This movie was a masterpiece, I'm glad i came across it.
"MY NAME IS DOOF AND YOU'LL DO WHAT I SAY!"
L E A V E 😂
@@beepbeep958 "Noooooooo cuurse youu parry de platypus!"
Woop, Woop
That is a great way to end the video (that look on Mok's face at the end)
Note that every song of Mok’s was about how awesome he thinks he is
Triumph of the glory. Triumph of the glory of me. Triumph!
Well he is the greatest thing since World War 3.
VERNE ANDRU? The animator who did Rock and Rule? I LOVE this 80s underground classic. I feel so bad that it didn't grad like Heavy Metal did, but I still loved this! Not just an animated musical, but also a scifi / postapocalyptic. Maybe that's just it; this was meant for us cosplay and scifi geeks. PLEASE come to DragonCon in Atlanta someday!
Hi - I worked primarily in story doing layouts, storyboards, designs, that sort of thing. I was actually on my way to work on Heavy Metal when Nelvana snagged me for Rock & Rule. I agree this is a better film and wish it had seen a better release than it got.
VerneAndru will you ever come out to DragonCon in Atlanta? Do you visit scifi cons in America?
I've done a few comic cons - Emerald City in Seattle and Alternate Press Expo in San Francisco. If I'm an invited guest, anything is possible - LOL.
I love this movie and soundtrack so much.
Dracula + David Bowie = Mok
I absolutely love this artwork/animation style. Don't know what to call it, just love it. Everything in this movie fit together so well (visually, soundtrack) regardless of legitimate criticisms some may have.
Great tune and video. I remember seeing it first on the CBC in the early 80's when I was 8 or 9 years old. Never knew it was Lou Reed though. What a great surprise.
this is an excellent example of why cell-animation is so great at lighting
Mok is my favorite animated villian of all time!
My favorite villain period.
They did awesome job making the movie and the graphics i can see that they put in thier hard earn work and dedication they got the talent the heart and soul for thier artwork.
Aparently a deleted line in the movie he decided to take revenge on his fans and the world because there were TWO OPEN SEATS at his last show.
Wow, that's tragic. He deserves to be on these "Villains that were actually right" RUclips videos.
Fabulous story. Thanks so much for sharing!
Hands down to the visual effects. Pretty epic i must say. 👍💪
Thanks. These were all done optically using tech ILM developed for Star Wars. There was one computer but that was used to control the camera stand.
So many Rock & rule vids from years ago are now resurfacing in the youtube feeds.
The film was done 40 years ago, I've had my clips up for years and it is only now that people are taking notice. Go figure. Just goes to show that if you wait long enough eventually things get noticed.
One of Lou Reed's greatest lost classics! Thanks for a perfect upload
Now this is how you make a villain song.
love the whole Mick Jagger look they used for Mok
1:57....foreshadowing...
This movie was so painfully embarrassing and cheesy yet I can't not watch it. Love it!
A proud owner of this movie!
Jeeez this song is catchy :D And Im in love with the animation, so expressive!
I love you Lou Reed.
Thanks a lot Nelvana
He reminds me of Dr. Frank N. Furter From The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Edit: Thanks A Lot I was not the only one
Behold the love child between David Bowie & Mick Jagger.
I love that song!!! 😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍
Every once in awhile this gets stuck in my head as "His name is Mok, Can You Not?"
I really like the lore of "I'm the biggest thing since WW3"
love how in the dream it was foreshadowing his fall
I paid a pretty penny but this will be in the mail this Thursday 😁
Jeffree Star in 20 years once he returns to his music career
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This'll be stuck in my head for weeks....
Ego The Living Planet: I have a huge narcissistic attitude.
Mok: About that...
I remember stumbling across this movie on the CBC when I was about 11 years old... it confused the hell out of me but I couldn't help but watch...
Thumbs up if you agree this is the best rock video of all time!!
Maybe the best one since World War 3
My favorite version!
The mud and slag of this unmastered version lend to its swagger!
Impressive animation and music
God I saw someone on insta playing a clip of this villain from the film and I fell absolutely in mad love with this character and I haven’t even seen the movie myself! I can’t wait to watch this lol it looks so trippy and funky.
Hands down the best part of the movie! I don't care what anyone says.
9/10 masterpiece! We didn't deserve this movie!
Mok looks like someone who likes to take a walk on the wild side.
Such an underrated treasure... Thanks for helping to grow something I love! Well, for creating the first Cannabis-themed superhero, too lol
Couldn't agree more!
one of my first loves.. Heavy Metal Mag.. Issac Asimov.. Bashki everything.. and This bad ass Movie... I am all grown up now.. well kinda... and been on a mission to reclaim these into my life.. I have managed to get just about all and constantly finding classic adult animated productions.. so NOT cartoons.. and this one was elusive to me for a while.. got it now..as well as about all Bashki..
Just finished this movie and I wish I had an album. ❤
Not sure if they ever released a record of the music. I agree it would be killer.
They didn’t ever release one as the movie failed in box office, sadly.
Why the heck does his design remind me in Tim Curry?! XD
+Arti Ficus to much midnight movie times in this, and others, including Rocky Horror perhaps
I'll give a a hint ..."and in the beginning there were lips, and they were good...and the lips said....* Michael Remy was ill the day the Earth stood still, but he told us...where we stand....and I really got hot...*
Definitely in the same vein as a Rocky Horror Picture show, right down the charisma and red lips.
