They both have silk presses. The first two ladies just have different textures. These new terminologies is another way black people keep texturism alive and well in our community. We just can’t seem to shake it sadly.
Agree. I think if it’s not looking dry and or flat and greasy you’re good. Side note this whole time I thought silk press just meant straight and shiny without a hot comb. 😊
@@kejuanlynette8531It’s especially an American problem. These black people are contradictory. Cotton press - this is my first time hearing the term - sounds like a form of "texturism'". With that being said , I guess it would be the way Sza wears her hair. Why not call it a "textured press", "simple press", or "low heat press"? One could make the argument that the term "silk press" is rooted in texturism. My scalp sweats too. I get my hair straightened quarterly when I get it cut. I ask my stylist to only get it as straight as she needs to in order to cut it. If I work out or do house work my roots revert. I don't like the silk press because my roots revert and my hair is so flat.
I think this is just texturism in disguise. when I was growing up a press was just called a press. you either got a press and curl or a blowout (round brushing). That was it. I don't press my hair out anymore I also have big fluffy hair too. I just blow it out instead, looks better in my opinion. also I'm 4b/4c
@@wordsbymaribeja1470it's honestly gross. It's like some black people are going crazy with the pedantic terms for all these styles to express their self hatred. "I did not know that we were quanitfying silk presses" you and me both 😅. I thought it was a fancy name for flat ironing this whole time! To me, the surface of the second woman's hair is just a bit more matte. Which is... Fine and normal.
This is crazy! As a mature woman > 55, this is just new buzz words to describe a light press or a heavy press for your hair! When I was younger my hairdresser knew to give me a light press because I did not like what we called then bone straight hair. Yet I would say the 2nd woman’s hair was far from cotton like texture. Her hair was straightened period!
Personally, I don't care for straight hair. However, for an accurate length check this coming April 2025, which is my 2 Year Hair Anniversary, I want to straighten my hair with no direct heat. I plan to go to a stylist and get my hair roller set and wrapped, like the 3rd video you showed. Only I know that a stylist can set my hair and wrap it better than I can. I also, was unaware of the saran wrap aspect, but that looks promising.
All I saw were silk presses (sp) that we’re styled differently. As you said, different textures and hair types will make the end results look different. Aside from the fact that they don't have the same texture, I believe there is a difference for me. I have a mix of 4a, 3c, and 3b hair, which can become silky and bone straight. However, I prefer what I call the "not bone straight" look, which I refer to as cotton. Your first look is silky; the second is cotton.
Absolutely. I remember a girl in college told me that I need to have babies with someone who has good hair (because I was natural before it was popular). . . And she was BLACK.
There is an actual difference between a silk press (which can be achieved on all hair textures) and just straightening your hair. I think that somehow the definition of what a silk press is got muddied, so whenever someone straightens their hair they call it a silk press, then all the little texturism trolls take that as their cue to come out of their caves & prove a point with snide remarks like “cotton press”. Which IS NOT a real thing btw, it was just something quick that someone could comment to undermine the second creators claim of “silky” and get some laughs. Instead of saying “hey this is why I wouldn’t consider this a silk press” (which honestly would be an unwarranted comment) people are always ready to get a joke off at the expense of someone else. With the topic at hand those jokes were rooted in texturism. There’s another creator who was also made fun of for her “fluffy press”, which is a term she decided to coin, as her hair not being silky straight is by choice.
History of hair straightening without chemicals in the US began in the 1890's and various ethnicities had this process done to their hair. Silk press was originally a straightening technique using silk aminos treatment, clarifying the hair to remove buildup, steaming the hair to lock in moisture and help enhance the conditioning process, blow dry as straight as possible, then using the pressing comb to straighten the roots and edges and using the flat iron to straighten the hair shaft from the middle to end and Marcel iron to curl if desired. Spraying the hair with a clear gloss or hair sheen for a light touch to bring out the shine and the hair wrapped with a plastic cap or saran wrap and put under a hooded dryer on the cool setting helped to close the cuticles for a sleeker look. One pass of the straightening irons and the safest degree of heat for an individuals hair texture is key to achieve the "bone straight"/silky look. Any other no chemical straightening procedures with straightening irons and curlers is just a regular press and curl like it was called back in the day.😂 "Nothing new under the sun"-Eccl 1:9. The so-called "cotton press" looks like another label for hair that is not bone straight but has a softer texture after straightening. 🙏🏾💜💐😀 When I had my hair straightened or did it myself I retouched it a couple days after then either set it on rollers or plaited the hair and rolled it on the ends then loosened it for a textured look when the press started to get older and began to revert.
In the past, I think I would have gone back to re-straighten my hair after my roots started to revert. But now, I'm okay with turning the style into a twist out or braid out since it's already starting to change back to a fluffy state. This Christmas, I may just rock some fluffy braid outs and twist outs with cute ribbons; I've been experimenting with different styles and loving them. Thanks for making this video ❤
I think some of those commets calling the young lady's hair "fluffy" were from people that have never been able to retain length themselves. Some people are just (self) haters. The young lady's hair was beautiful and is whatever she said it is.
Mya, I have heard of a soft press (not cotton press). This year was the first year I wore my hair straight for 5 months. I only retouched it once very lightly due to a special occasion. Been back to curls since June and plan to wear a blow out or maybe straighten this month. I enjoy the versatility of natural hair. 🙂
I agree that a better term could be used to describe a cotton press, but I think it was chosen because a silk (in the way we use it) is a fabric that is smooth and shiny. That is what the traditional silk press was. When people started doing blow outs with a pass of a flat iron, the resultant texture wasn't bone straight and so what "fabric/fiber" do you think of. Either wool or cotton and people settled on cotton. I'm still in my corner wondering why people just don't call a blow out a blow out, lol.
I think taking the term 'cotton' as a dig is part of the problem. We normalize and further perpetuate the misconception of texture hierarchy when we do. A reference to cotton being an 'attack' is extreme...unless it really really bothers you to be seen that way. I just don't want the CottonHead Cuties to take on the implied/generational shade.
When I saw the first one I thought Dominican Doobie, but oh well. All hair is beautiful as long as it is healthy. People are really showing the ugly in their hearts and I would advise them to growup and heal. First lady has a relaxer and the others don't that is the only difference.
When I was in high school, I would re-straighten my hair once my roots started to revert. Now as an adult (I rarely ever wear my hair straight) once I see half an inch of reverted roots, I wash my hair. I prioritize hair health over wearing my hair straight.
I said it once & I'll say it again some of us ain't satisfied unless our hair is bone straight I prefer mine big & thick flat iron & I never re straighten I do a single knot out or single braid for a textured wave look when it starts to revert team big body hair!
You are so beautiful. Love the colour combination today. Growing up in Jamaica it was referred to as strengthening or flat ironing it was only when I moved to America I learned the term silk press so I’m not sure what really is a silk press vs regular strengthening. I haven’t straighten my hair in a few years but when I did I would retouch it. I’m trying to retain my length currently so when I decide to strengthen my hair again it will be one and done.
Good morning my fellow Jamaican lol. The term silk press is relatively new to me as well. Whenever I would use a flat iron I would say I straightened my hair.
The second young lady has color treated hair. Her hair was not bone straight due to not being pressed at a higher temp. Her hair seemed to have been curled and wrapped which made it have volume. The first young lady has bone straight hair that was just wrapped.
"Cotton" is such an offensive word to describe our hair given our history with cotton. (It really be our own ppl smh) I say, fluffy, or soft press. I don't like my hair bone straight either, it looks limp and lifeless to me since I'm used to body. Tress to Impress has MASTERED the rollerset for sure! Her hair always looks AMAZING. My roots don't revert. My ends do, but as long as I can still comb through it, I just let it be.
Good morning. We can find another word, I just wasnt aware that there is now a hierarchy when it comes to naturals who straighten their hair. Those last 2 rollers sets were beautiful.
I love my textured hair. My natural hair journey first started by first accepting my 4c hair. I watched your videos for inspiration and tips that l can incorporate into my routine. Our people need to do better.
Good point about the term cotton press. I love fluffy press though! My hair hasn't responded well to heat in the past so the last time I straightened my hair, a couple years ago, when it started to revert I didn't refresh it. I just rode the wave as long as I could lol.
Once my hair starts reverting I DO NOT flat iron in an effort to re-straighten my roots…nope….I also do not like my hair bone straight. I like it wavy which two or three big French braids accomplishes beautifully. To each his own…so many beautiful styles, lengths and textures!…BTW I will never refer to anyone as having a “cotton press” it’s just too much…I simply say hair that is flat ironed or pressed if it was literally pressed. Too many categories. I ignore and keep it moving. TBH I don’t even use the term silk press..it’s flat ironed hair and people can see that it’s silky, fluffy etc.
Good morning, I do not restraighten either! My root will just have to be fluffy ! I would never refer to anyone's style as a cotton press either. I do not use the term silk press either, being that I am the only one who straightens my hair, I an you it isnt silk lol.
Remember the days when it was straight, wavy, or curly? Yeah let's go back to that. I think people are just making things up. These ladies hair look like silk press to me. I just need people to stop knit picking over these terms. Your hair doesn't have to be bone straight to be considered a silk press. Your hair is beautiful no matter what and so are the other ladies. The people who are knit picking over this stupid topic in my opinion are jealous and just want something negative to say. Also if your not relaxed or straight natural then yes there will be texture and reverted roots.
I love the term "Big press". That's kinda cute! Black people are known to have big hair. I never cared for silk presses anyhow. Why does everyone want bone straight hair? To each their own. I love my natural hair. It's way more versatile.
As someone who hasn't and likely never would get a silk press since I generally either wear my natural texture or braids when I want color but don't want to color treat my hair, I think that silk presses in the traditional sense is what that first lady had. I get a blow out once or twice a year for trims and to make sure I don't have a split end issue so that's my personal point of reference. When I hear of someone getting a silk press or see videos of it, it's usually bone straight and super shiny due to the products used during the silk press process. Over the last few years, people have been adding curls to their silk presses to get body, but the roots were generally bone straight and the hair was super shiny. Now during the time when we were all under the stay at home order, people were doing silk presses on their own and looking at the process, they weren't using any special products and what resulted was similar to a blow out and flat iron combo that you can get done at any Dominican salon. For those with coarser/more textured natural hair getting a bone straight result at home is harder without the proper products and no one wants to damage their hair and so I think "cotton" silk presses were coined. Both styles are beautiful, but I think when you coin something as a silk press people are expecting something different. If she had just said she had a blow out, I doubt there would have been any talk of a cotton press.
Beautiful ladies, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. God did not make a mistake when he carefully knitted you in your mother's womb. Silk press, cotton press, no press: does not matter. Wear your hair in a style that makes you feel your best. You are the gorgeous daughter of the most high God. He loves you soooooo much!
First of all, the term "silk press" is a term stylists made up to charge more money for pressing the hair without using grease. "Cotton press" sounds derogatory, like a term someone with low hair-esteem made up to describe a cheap failed version of a silk press because cotton is cheaper than silk. I would describe the first two women's hair in your video as straighten with a flat iron. The 3rd woman had a roller set. The 4th woman looked like she put her hair in rollers to preserve her curl after it had being previously flat ironed. If I would describe hair in it's straighten but fluffy/textured state, using a fabric term, I'd say "velvet press" instead of "cotton press".
Never heard of a cotton press I would call it a fluffy silk press. I don't like the term cotton press either. I don't silk press as my hair reverts just a blow dry for me.
I personally do restraighten my hair. Due to having curly hair, my roots are very noticeable from my ends. However, will not straighten my hair more than twice unless it’s for a very important event.
To me a silk press is a deep press and sometimes more heat , but it will definitely depend on your hair's texture on how much heat is needed to be used to get that silkie like texture. And you have a regular press or a blowout less heat, but still give that strength looks And there is the Belizean blowout I believe that the word "Cotton press" is just being shady Anyway that's 4shareing it's interesting ❤😊
What even is a silk press and how is it different from how we used to press/flat iron hair back before it was suddenly calling it a silk press? Is this just n example of people coming up with new names for old things so they can charge more money?
I think you hit the nail on the head! This is an example of people getting “creative” with terminology in order to make it seem as if it’s something different than what it actually is.
All the other ladies hair and your hair look great. I thought the term silk press was just the technique to straighten, not the end result. And I agree, those comments from in the community. All my life I've been made fun of about my hair, and 99% of the disparaging comments either way came from within.
I think all of their hair styles looked nice. I really hate when people are mean to others. There was no reason to say something negative to try to hurt another woman’s feelings.
I had not heard of the cotton press until this video. I've straightened my hair on very low heat, so it is not bone straight. Other times, I get it professionally silk pressed. Ive periodically touched up reverted spots but not often.
Hi 👋🏽 I won't restraighten my hair. I think regardless of texture....a silk press is a silk press once they use silk press technique....has nothing to do with final texture because everyone's texture is different ❤❤
A silk press is more of a professional service. Most diy straightening is too oily or doesn’t last the same because the cuticle is not laying flat. After a week or more, silk is out the door.
I thought I was coming here to learn a new hair straightening method that doesn't damage hair😂😂. Am Nigerian, so these type of things will just fly over my head, am so glad to say it too. I didn't know there is anything negative about "cotton". Anyways I know that if you don't straighten your hair often, it will always revert very quickly. I feel like my roots revert on day two. The rest of the hair remain fluffy until I wash it. If you straighten more often, like every month or twice a month, your hair will be heat trained and it will stay straight and silky smooth.
Welp we did it again!!! Made up something to hurt one another but why not play along. Both of these are silk presses what I did to my hair before thanksgiving was DEFINITELY a cotton press (since we just coined the term). My ends have not been clipped in almost a year and honey they looked as if cotton balls or ornaments were hanging from them. And that my friends is a cotton press lol ❤
Initially, i just thought it was a matter of how straight their hair got in the straightening process, or even a matter of one woman's hair being thinner than the other woman's, wo the result looks different. But I also agree with everyone else, that this is just texturism. It's probably meant to be a rude comment but people like the idea of "fluffy" silk press and compliment it. At least, I don't think a majority of the people intend to be rude when they say it. And yeah, the historical context of "cotton press" is not lost on me.
This is my first time hearing the term “cotton press.” My sister told me a couple of days about the fluffy silk press and it looks the same lol. I always go for the fluffy silk press, so when my roots revert back I never straighten them.
Also, how do you care for your hair when you keep it straight for 30 days? I only straighten my hair to trim, and I keep to my regular wash cycle of two weeks when I do.
I love your headwrap and headband. Where did you get the headband? I love getting a cotton press. I love to exercise and have no time to worry about my roots while my body goes to pot. Besides, I don’t like the look of bone-straight hair.
Hello Mya both ladies hair looks beautiful I to me. I rather have the one that the second young lady had . I don’t want bone straight.Your hair looks beautiful too.💜🌹
That part. Yet, if you’re focused on health and texture, now you’re ‘bullying’ straight naturals for not calling damaged hair healthy. Make it make it sense smh.
Hello, I think a silk press refers to the final outcome…silky vs silky with a little volume. Silk press from what I’ve seen is hairs final outcome being silky. And the silky with a little volume from what I’ve seen is silky with very slight texture. Just an opinion, love your videos, I believe all hair is just beautiful.
Misnomers … well it’s a glass gloss boring look and a matte look… lol…. A flat iron is used to press the hair…. I don’t mind grown out bushy roots either . I prefer hair with body…. The first time I’m hearing about cotton too
I am a straight natural and I do not re-straighten. I will usually switch from straight to using flexi rods or curlers for a more textured/curly look. I think this has a little to do with texturism and A LOT to do with people trying to be funny smh. I.e. silk vs cotton
I suppose it sounds like an oxymoron, sure. it’s a term for black women who are not relaxed, but primarily wear their hair straightened. I mean, “natural” doesn’t necessarily indicate a specific hair texture either.
You know, for an African living in Africa, I feel really sad to see my dark skinned sisters finding ways to feel superior to others of the same color. I and many African women would be PRIVILEGED just to afford a successful silk press just for Christmas. It's so sad. First, it was the hair typing, now we qualifying silk presses?!😮😮😮😢
i think people are taking things too seriously. i swear black people would ban cotton clothing just because it makes them think of slavery. 🙄. it's not that deep. The world has several different fibers, the most popular ones being, wool, cotton, and silk. It's literally just way to describe the type of fabric. Hair is a fiber and follows the same principles. You have hair that resembles silk, hair that resembles whool, and hair that resembles cotton. idk why bw always have to make things negative.
That comment was hateriffic!!! They just had to say something 🙄 their hair probably 2 secs long, with NO edges!! Lol ok rant over 😂 but seriously, people need to stop with eventing new ways to cause dvision. Can we please get off the plantation?
I didn’t know it was an « issue ». I always thought it was normal that the hair shows quickly his texture. I think I’ve never seen a coily hair stay as flat in the root. That being said, If people want more flat roots: Why they don’t use a wig?
They both have silk presses. The first two ladies just have different textures. These new terminologies is another way black people keep texturism alive and well in our community. We just can’t seem to shake it sadly.
Precisely. Texturism is now worse than colorism IMO.
Exactly, I agree.
Agree. I think if it’s not looking dry and or flat and greasy you’re good. Side note this whole time I thought silk press just meant straight and shiny without a hot comb. 😊

In high school I am surprised I did not gold bald lol. My curling iron and I were best friends.
I said it once & I'll say it again some of us ain't satisfied unless our hair is bone straight I prefer mine big & thick flat iron & I never re straighten I do a single knot out or single braid for a textured wave look when it starts to revert team big body hair!
Give big thick hair over bone straight any day !
... because - the "Communitah" 🙄
We're always gonna find a way to be colorist to each other! 🤷♀️
Can a press just be a press? We love labels and boxes. It’s us, no one else doing these silly isolations.
Good morning and thank you. I am so glad that my tips have helped you !
I know your 4c hair is beautiful.
Cotton or Silk Pressed, your hair is beautiful. It's a blessing to have hair to even press.
In my opinion, cotton press sounds cute 😍
Good point about the term cotton press. I love fluffy press though! My hair hasn't responded well to heat in the past so the last time I straightened my hair, a couple years ago, when it started to revert I didn't refresh it. I just rode the wave as long as I could lol.
Lol, me as well, once m edges and roots revert, that's it! They will be fluffy until it is time to was.
Once I press my hair I do not use additional heat. I prefer the term fluffy press.
I do not as well. The world will just have to see my curly edges and roots
I love the term "Big press". That's kinda cute! Black people are known to have big hair. I never cared for silk presses anyhow. Why does everyone want bone straight hair? To each their own. I love my natural hair. It's way more versatile.
Good morning. lol I kind of like that :Big Press". Yall know I love big hair !
He loves you soooooo much!
thank you
First of all, the term "silk press" is a term stylists made up to charge more money for pressing the hair without using grease.
I had not heard of the term either until it popped up on my feed !
I like fluffy press better. I thought it was just all straight hair.
And you have a regular press or a blowout less heat, but still give that strength looks
And there is the Belizean blowout
I believe that the word "Cotton press" is just being shady
Anyway that's 4shareing it's interesting ❤😊
Of course I found it very interesting as well.
Oh goodness, what now qualifies something as a Belizean blowout?
I like the fluffy hair better
Yes, I like the word fluffy.
Both ladies look lovely❤
They absolutely do.
Hard working to say what these women had done to their hair as they all had beautiful but very different hair textures.
Thank you and yes unfortunately most comments are from within.
Good morning me either, that is why I clicked on it lol.
Hi 👋🏽
I won't restraighten my hair.
I think regardless of texture....a silk press is a silk press once they use silk press technique....has nothing to do with final texture because everyone's texture is different ❤❤
Hello! I do not restraighten my hair either. My roots will just have to be fluffy !
A silk press is more of a professional service. Most diy straightening is too oily or doesn’t last the same because the cuticle is not laying flat. After a week or more, silk is out the door.
Yes sis, people just need to stop, all these ladies and your have beautiful hair silky or cottony. Lawd people make up anything to complain about.
@@oriana9678 🤣
Initially, i just thought it was a matter of how straight their hair got in the straightening process, or even a matter of one woman's hair being thinner than the other woman's, wo the result looks different. But I also agree with everyone else, that this is just texturism. It's probably meant to be a rude comment but people like the idea of "fluffy" silk press and compliment it. At least, I don't think a majority of the people intend to be rude when they say it. And yeah, the historical context of "cotton press" is not lost on me.
I absolutely do not use more heat. There are things you can do to get them straight again, without heat.
I do not as well.
My roots will just have to be fluffy !
This is my first time hearing the term “cotton press.” My sister told me a couple of days about the fluffy silk press and it looks the same lol. I always go for the fluffy silk press, so when my roots revert back I never straighten them.
I'll take fluffy any day ! So much body and bounce.
Also, how do you care for your hair when you keep it straight for 30 days? I only straighten my hair to trim, and I keep to my regular wash cycle of two weeks when I do.
I would use a light oil and then at night I would pin curl.
I love your headwrap and headband. Where did you get the headband? I love getting a cotton press. I love to exercise and have no time to worry about my roots while my body goes to pot. Besides, I don’t like the look of bone-straight hair.
Thank you!
The headwrap is from my local beauty supply store. The headband is from Express , but it is old.
Hello Mya both ladies hair looks beautiful I to me. I rather have the one that the second young lady had . I don’t want bone straight.Your hair looks beautiful too.💜🌹
Good morning, I do not like bone straight hair as well.
And yes all of the ladies' hair were beautiful.
There is a whole new anti-natural Afro hair movement happening from right within the natural hair 'community'.
Thank you and I believe all hair is beautiful as well.
Silk vs silky with a little texture is so nuanced to me lol.
2:22 😂😂😂😂😂
Misnomers … well it’s a glass gloss boring look and a matte look… lol…. A flat iron is used to press the hair…. I don’t mind grown out bushy roots either . I prefer hair with body…. The first time I’m hearing about cotton too
I have never heard the term cotton press either but I would consider both to be silk presses.
This was my first time as well
Ive never had a silk press
And I forgot to mention my hair is waist length low manipulation!
I am a straight natural and I do not re-straighten. I will usually switch from straight to using flexi rods or curlers for a more textured/curly look. I think this has a little to do with texturism and A LOT to do with people trying to be funny smh. I.e. silk vs cotton
Straight natural? Confusing misnomer ….
I suppose it sounds like an oxymoron, sure. it’s a term for black women who are not relaxed, but primarily wear their hair straightened. I mean, “natural” doesn’t necessarily indicate a specific hair texture either.
Speak sis:)
i would say your hair was a "cotton " press from day one. silk i would say is completely without texture. cotton has fluff, texture.
Can we discuss; why must we name everything? It really leads to "less than" or "othering". I will be informing Santa of this foolishness. LOL
Some black women make life so exhausting . They re so full of idle time, they have to make drama to sleep at night
While I think these styles are beautiful I do wonder how much the hair can take being so bone straight
Ohh no the term is off putting
I didn’t know it was an « issue ». I always thought it was normal that the hair shows quickly his texture. I think I’ve never seen a coily hair stay as flat in the root. That being said, If people want more flat roots: Why they don’t use a wig?
I didnt know this was an issue as well.
When I straighten my hair I just say I straighten my hair.
