I used to be an A/T driver until I just forced myself to use M/T. I was terrible at it initially, but now I can’t see myself using A/T again. Great video. Thanks.
Absolutely! Never used manual shifting on any Gran Turismo except for this one. I use a controller and it was awkward at first but it’s 2nd nature now and I find it easier especially when I can downshift a little to drop the speed if I’m coming into a turn too hot.
I use automatic in racing all the time!!! I never miss a gear change at the start of the race!!! And I can focus mainly on the line and avoiding other bad drivers!!!
I made myself switch to MT in 2019 and it helped make me better in a way I didn't think it would. I started paying more attention and started getting a better understanding of how to control a car and how to recognise how it reacts to my inputs, and that's expanded since I got a wheel and started properly playing PCars and ACC. The simple way of putting is that switching to manual made me concentrate more, and everything built from there to make me better and faster than before.
@@noorazfaruddin467 So that does say that motosport use DCT right? I mean I know about racing there's many type of gear eg: Stright cut, sequential but the reasons that they are using manual is because of weight when it comes to top teir race GT4, GT3, GTE mostly are DCT so not always a manual it depends on what are they using it for. Manual are easy to takecare of compare to auto but got to admit that auto nowadays are far more better than manual.
@@callsignkasper624 as we see on racing-footage whereby driver shift gear by mean sequential manual and also with clutch on foot. Meanwhile, DCT for road users doesn't come with clutch on foot. Automatic transmission no matter which year it manufactured still cannot beat the efficiency of manual transmission as well it's maintenance. Believe that, most professional race-car drivers said so.
Totally agree with your findings here. I have found that I am much faster when I focus on lines, braking and smooth brake/throttle transitions. What I also find is that there is usually one or two corners on a track where you really need to downshift more than the automatic wants to, so the car is just kinda out of control through that corner. An example is the top of Mt. Panorama as you launch over the top of the hill. That is really tricky in automatic and I found that I need to brake quite early and have the car pointed just right to manage through it. It also seems that there are certain cars that just do better when you can short shift them so you sometime can’t pick the car that everyone else is using. Great experiment though. Thank you!
This is very interesting, really didn't expect at to be as close to Mt as it was, granted you'd done a few laps more, but if someone is struggling for racing lines and braking points etc as you say, why not use it. I used it for ages with controller and felt like I could attack a track more with it on in tt mode, however as you say for races is where I felt you lost out massively, especially close racing if an error was made and your car lost speed unexpectedly I felt it took more time to recover speed in the car in at then in Mt, just what I found. Great video as always tidge.
When I first got my wheel I drove in automatic for the first few weeks so I could work on braking points and turning parts. But after learning that Manual is definatly better fore fine tuning the corners and getting the most out of the car. 100% agree with this video
Some racing games allow you to change gears even in auto mode, so you can short-shift when you need it and downshift manually if your auto is doing it too late.
@@ahmadmohmed4448 actually there are more games that supports "semi-auto" than strict auto/manual. GT in the old days, had the option to hold a gear in AT to prevent from down/up-shift.. thats gone since GT5...I think... even ACC and F1 allows "semi-auto".
Really nice to see a competent man like you take on this topic - something many must've wondered about! I'd like to add though, that there's only one track- car 'sample' and I've come across a fair amount of car/ corner combinations where the AT gearing doesn't match the corner well

Hey Tidge. For me, I am always using A/T all the while ever since I played GT Sport until I took the FIA Online Championships seriously. Initially I was planning to learn M/T when GT7 and PS5 is easy to get as well as getting my own wheel and sim rig. I was scared at first when it comes to learning M/T until I had to learn for this Saturday's Manu race at Tokyo South Inner Loop (when it is only a MEGA fuel saving race). But after learning how to drive M/T, I sort of understand better when it comes to racing. :D
Thought this was a very interesting video. For a very long time, I was under the impression Automatic was just miles slower because like some assists it took much of that control away from you and it certainly felt that way when I went from pad to wheel (well when I finally learned to stop overdriving, a trap all too easy to fall into when you suddenly have way more control). Seeing this has me now wondering if the disadvantages and advantages are abit more dependent on both player skill and the car being used, maybe someone who is already highly skilled can naturally take that automatic alot higher up then someone who's less skilled and then there's the powerband and torque with certain cars. Now as you mentioned, the tire wear and Fuel use is an advantage that in my experience leans very much towards manual as I have found that alot of times I actually have been to make and even extend the fuel numbers just with my driving (I suspect its how I use the throttle in certain corners) as well as actually been able to make tires last abit longer whereas on the pad the fuel map was the only way I was even going to make the fuel number work (Basically the only reason I was able to win my final race in the GT Sport closed beta when that got introduced) and there was not really much I could do for tire saving. Basically, it seems the choice of transmission is more dependent on two things: Skill level and Comfort level (with cars being abit more of a wilder variable). Some COULD win with an Automatic if they are skilled enough, but would they be comfortable with it? Maybe someone less skilled has some potential that can be very much unlocked if they switch to manual, but would they be comfortable with it? Its a very interesting dynamic.
Yup exactly. I originally had the same opinion that I thought it would be miles off and it isn't the case. Which is good in my opinion as you say if it can help with the comfort of someone and it doesn't impact them to much then it's brilliant :D!
Fuel and tyre saving with AT only works with power mappings. There should be an additional control option (like power mapping) for AT rev limit. AT is not only for Noobs, it is for disabled people, too. Sim racing is one of the few "sports" where disabled people can compete with non-disabled people more or less on a level playing field.
Agree with all the main points here. Being an automatic user there have only been a few daily races where I found it necessary to go manual, and it all depends on short-shifting. Monza was the main culprit. And Tsukuba as well, but only for the Mazda's.
I feel like the power band difference is bigger in certain cars. The peak power in the Chevy Corvette gr3/gr4 and the veyron gr4 is at 50% of the rev range. The Viper gr4 needs to be revved out massively. I think that influences the laptimes
I learnt the skill of Manual Transmission back in the Test Drive Unlimited era (2007), during times I was just cruising around. Right from the get-go, it became very much second-nature for me to drive in MT.
Good vid Tidge. Maybe a future one would be which cars to short-shift, which to rev out, and why. I've gotten used to Manual after playing all the other GT games in Auto. This is the first game I've raced vs. real people and manual seems essential. I still have problems sometimes shifting in the right places. Some cars you short shift, some you rev way out, others you do right at the top of the bar. I just have to learn by trial and error, mostly error, haha. I know the diagram in the car settings shows the top of the curve where you should shift, but there's only a top and bottom number, so you kinda have to estimate what number it's at. Knowing all that and also racing and trying to win isn't easy.
Manual is great because for many turns that aren't very tight, it's better to be a gear higher than what the game suggests. It improves grip through the turn by limiting wheel spin. Manual is also good for when it rains. You can shifter to higher gears to avoid wheel spin and sliding.
But on the flip side to that a higher gear sacrifices acceleration which is what you want when in a race against people of equal or greater skill and you can't afford to lose that precious bit of acceleration
For ME, auto is best in group 1 and F1, simply because I just can’t keep up with the gears lol. Anything else, and I use manual coz I know how to determine the gears to be in for a lot of the corners, and also with the added bonus of being able to shift, to help with rotation etc. Anyway, really appreciate the time and effort to respond to your audience 👊🏽
I am really enjoy your 'instructional' videos. I used to get so much grief for using AT. I am in a slightly strange position - I am a pad user (just don't physically have the room to set up a wheel/pedals) and my right hand has reduced strength/mobility (about 3/5 normal). So depending on the car, I can find gear changes to be a bit tricky - especially when they are fast changes...so for some cars I need to rely on automatic gears, else I am shifting way to late. I have made many changes to how I play Gran Turismo Sport since joining a racing league and since November I have virtually turned off all assists (ASM, Countersteer, etc) and only use ABS and TC (on certain cars).

Interestingly I have a GR Supra & I’ve done this same thing with a manual version. The automatic gearbox in these cars knows exactly where it needs to be based on your driving style. The automatic will spank the manual in every case. You cannot shift as fast as a automatic with modern cars. It’s impossible.
In the higher range, I think the engine has less torque and can’t push the fronts as hard on corner exit, which feels like less understeer but is actually less acceleration.
Hey, Tidge, very interesting video! I'm catching up with your Driving School videos, but I'm now much more prone to ACC, which I discovered recently and now I'm working on the career mode. I'd love to see your views on some aspects and main differences between ACC and GT Sport, such as traction control, general car control, etc. Thanks m8, love from Brazil!
In gt4 u could hold down the shift up button, when in automatic, to prevent upshift and let that auto go into the redline limiter, that only helps for a few cars, but I only use manual. I don't see how automatic prevent tire saving as that's mainly about cornering style and speed tho.
So every time you change gear it uses tyre wear in GT Sport so if Automatic is changing gear for you where you don't necessarily need it, it prevents tyre saving tis all :).
My view is that in the hands of Tidgney or a top slit driver it will be much the same.. the lap times come from turn in and exit from the corners and being able to carry speed like in the SSes or death chicance here. At my lower level, manual has been better for me as allows faster recovery from less than perfect lines by being more in control of which gear i am in. My suggestion for another video is on traction control and how to wean yourself of it.. i use it on 2 but experiments with lower have gone, lets call it, badly!
I always turn TC off it makes people think they are better then what they really are and if you don't know how to drive with TC off then Project Cars punishes you for your lack of skills
Manual with clutch in Forza is broken. It was introduced for the drifting crowd but has an acceleration advantage from the fake power shifting boost it gives the car. You can take the same car and on the drag strip the car using manual w/clutch will walk the car without the clutch with all other variables the same including launch and shift points. Its an exploit that Turn 10 refuses to address. IMHO Turn 10 needs to either fix it or get rid of it in Forza Motorsport 8 whenever they decide to finally release it. They also need to get rid over every truck, van, jeep and SUV from the motorsport games. All they do is encourage shit behavior like ramming. I am also part of the no assist crowd but it you ever look on leaderboards you will notice the top times will use ABS.
I play paddle shifters occasionally on ACC when I play that. Other than that, I prefer to play h-shifter on assetto corsa, dirt, wrc, etc. I enjoy older vehicles mostly anyhow and even the old Grand Prix cars tickle my fancy more than new ones.
I'm on a pad and I'm absolutely terrible at Manual due to my large hands ✋️. Automatic is a must. Give me a wheel on the other hand ✋️ and I'm all Manual ⚙️
Very interesting. Even a car that supposedly needs short shifting was just as quick..I guess that unless there’s fuel or tyre wear settings manual is not necessary. Need to try a few different cars to see if it holds true
I have always used Automatic and it can be different in the slip, I do get lest understeer in my Nissan. Also look into Auto Brake (with or without Auto Steering) Tig, interesting in the Go-Kart, Super Formula and the Red Bull X2014 Junior. But depends on the track.
For a while I was fast with Automatic had to take a brake trigger finger was kicking in. I qualify with MT every once and a while if it's a track I know.
great vid mate! I use AT as im using a controller and just find it less buttons to press so i can concentrate on my lap. i managed to get the supra into a 1.39.4 on the daily and know i can improve by at least a second on AT just havent managed to hook up the lap as of yet :)
Good video Tidgney. I did an experiment before on the same track, turn the TC down from 2 to 1. Much better off the line but....experiment was a faliure at turn 3 when I was facing the wrong way 😂😂😂
Now I understand 😊 why A/T better than M/T but I'm still using a joystick. Some players have a steering wheel that gets better control while I'm trying to beat a time it's. Seems so hard so give me any tips for Driving skills i make sure try to beat professional drivers
I used to use a joystick and was very competitive with it, you can still be competitive using the joystick. Best thing to do is focus on an individual corner and try to improve corner by corner.
I haven't run AT in GT since GT3, but back then you could hold down a button (I think one of the shift buttons) to hold the current gear. Does Sport still have that feature?
Make a note of what speeds the gears go between. Sometimes the revs bounce the speed down, so you need to change up before it does that. Not all do this so worth finding out for yourself.
@@martinlatham4322 the Pad has assistance, so the steering is slower. In the wheel the steering is immediate, so if you move the wheel fast, it'll unsettle the car. Be gentle/smooth with it, and it would behave much better.
I’ve had to start using Auto as I have ME and manual makes my hands really sore over time. Automatic is 1 second per minute slower for me. Mostly because you can engine brake and that’s a massively used race technique.
I’ve really got to learn MT. My pace is okay-ish but it needs to be better. I thought it’d be best to start AT in order to reduce the cognitive load because there’s a fuckton of things going on. I think I’ve gotten to a point where my mind can process all the info and react intuitively without a whole lot of conscious thinking. I think I’ve finally thought of a use for one of the 3 horsepower Eurorunt cars. It might be easier to learn manual at that slower pace.
@@tidgney I have went back and crushed all my old times since learning manual. I even got myself half a second off the global top 10 pace on one of the circuit experience full course laps I re-ran.
When driving with pad I have been with AT, too. I am driving with wheel now for about 10 months now. I have changed to MT immediately. For me it feels weird not to shift by myself with a wheel. But there really is no great time advantage with MT. I think, one big advantage with manual is, that you can correct little mistakes better an faster, for example when you missed your braking point slightly, or in races when the car in front of you is braking earlier than usual.
8 years of dirty racing on gt5 and 6, never cared about any manual gear until.... Until GTS... I had to stay n00b auto or become a bit pro on manual with controller. I can tell you, switching to manual will dramaticly improve your skills period. Took me about 6 hours practice. Now I am AS and competing with A+ SS drivers, so yeah! Starting last in a n00b lobby on manual will gain 10 positions in just a few turns.
What if the game let you choose what rpm automatic gearing shifts at? Like you have a gearbox that lets you selects what rpm that the automatic gearing will shift at
@@tidgney yeah there would probably be exploits to it at some point and then people would cheat. Still it's a great idea for folks who don't want to use a shifter.
auto ist not that bad in modern cars with very fast gearboxes, but it's very bad on old cars. you want to do as little gear changes as possible in old cars, because they are so slow. you can lose seconds per lap there with auto. A good example for that is the lewis hamilton time trial at the nordschleife in that old sauber.
I wished we had this "semi-automatic" mode in GT Sport. I get overwhelmed concentrating on gearing for long races but I always know when I want to drop down an extra gear for rotation and engine braking or shift up early for traction
Why are games still giving advantage to manual shifters? Does the game give advantage to the supercars with automatics that shift faster then humans? Lets start applying real life to so called simulator games!!!
One of reason to make manuel and automatic so close is GT sport does not simulate torque converter of automatic transmission, because the Supra isn't have automatic version. Disvantage of torque converter is limit power output for a automatic transmission vehicle,so......you already know something about truth : Reality is more cruel, this game is gentle and soft.

At my lower level, manual has been better for me as allows faster recovery from less than perfect lines by being more in control of which gear i am in.
My suggestion for another video is on traction control and how to wean yourself of it.. i use it on 2 but experiments with lower have gone, lets call it, badly!
Really nice insight Justin thankyou :D! Interesting to hear that it helps you recover better never really thought about that before.
I always turn TC off it makes people think they are better then what they really are and if you don't know how to drive with TC off then Project Cars punishes you for your lack of skills
I was automatic gears before forza Motorsport but now it’s manual with clutch all day!! No assist either.
I will only do manual with clutch when I get a stick shift rig with a wheel.
It just feels weird with a controller.
Brilliant Video Tidge. I use automatic because I use the Dual shock, so I found it a lot easier.
My personal preference is AT for arcade-y racers like Forza Horizon and NFS and MT for sims
This car is good in short gear ranges so it’s probably the best car to limit the difference between manual and auto, manual is way faster than auto
I'm always a manual guy but i tried using auto maybe i can get much more consistent laptimes
It felt like i lost the sense of speed relying on auto 🤣
Good video Tidgney. I did an experiment before on the same track, turn the TC down from 2 to 1. Much better off the line but....experiment was a faliure at turn 3 when I was facing the wrong way 😂😂😂
Always race on 1 at the most, that’s the easiest way to be faster
It depends of the car ... Beetle GT3 is very good with automatic.
Been watched your videos for a while now and I only just realised your on the intro video. I've been manual since Sega rally on the saturn
Hahaha, I got spotted at work for that to :P!
Manual feels more immersive for me especially cause it's a racing sim
Unless you’re American then auto probably feels more immersive lol
@@fatbroccoli8 hahahahahahaha
Maybe check direct drive vs belt or gear drive ...its a no brainer
I haven't run AT in GT since GT3, but back then you could hold down a button (I think one of the shift buttons) to hold the current gear. Does Sport still have that feature?
I dont think so... it normally holds the gears without any input until you want to shift up or down, or put it in reverse with triangle. 👍
6:45 Can you explain this? Why do you shift down to 1?
Added rotation :).
Racing is about speed, and new automatic always win. Scrap your 50s manual n get a modern one. Feel the technology 😅
Very interesting I have just bought a wheel. So having to learn again. Any tips anyone?
Make a note of what speeds the gears go between. Sometimes the revs bounce the speed down, so you need to change up before it does that. Not all do this so worth finding out for yourself.
@@playerone82 thanks for the tip
@@martinlatham4322 the Pad has assistance, so the steering is slower. In the wheel the steering is immediate, so if you move the wheel fast, it'll unsettle the car. Be gentle/smooth with it, and it would behave much better.
@@BastianUllr nice one appreciate the tips as trying to improve my racing
Make sure you set a time with your pad then try to match it on the wheel :)!
I might be the only one who uses both depending on car and track.
MT would be really good to learn it's so helpful in alot of situations
@@tidgney I have went back and crushed all my old times since learning manual. I even got myself half a second off the global top 10 pace on one of the circuit experience full course laps I re-ran.
I always use automatic and I think I need at least 50 hours manual driving practice to be near my automatic times
I used automatic for 20 years. Changed to manual last year, only took me a while to get better with it. It's also more fun. So it will be worth it.
@@denagi8276 Are you with wheel? because im on pad
@@epictobi26 yes, using the G29 currently
For racing, manual is better. Time trial I think it's a very small advantage overall.
The McLaren Gr4 loses alot of speed when not shortshifting.
What cars benefit from short shifting... Just the faster top speed cars. Curious if there is a link to cars that benefit from short shifting?
Great video! (Even though I don’t play GT Sport)
You can’t fuel save in an auto
In my experience, you kinda can but you have to really lean on the fuel maps to do it since the freedom to short shift is out of your hands.
Great vid 📹 cheers 🍻
8 years of dirty racing on gt5 and 6, never cared about any manual gear until.... Until GTS... I had to stay n00b auto or become a bit pro on manual with controller. I can tell you, switching to manual will dramaticly improve your skills period. Took me about 6 hours practice. Now I am AS and competing with A+ SS drivers, so yeah! Starting last in a n00b lobby on manual will gain 10 positions in just a few turns.
Interesting video!
im using Manual and automatic. sometimes i using manual and automatic but. For me manual easy.
What if the game let you choose what rpm automatic gearing shifts at? Like you have a gearbox that lets you selects what rpm that the automatic gearing will shift at
They'd never let that happen tbh
@@tidgney yeah there would probably be exploits to it at some point and then people would cheat. Still it's a great idea for folks who don't want to use a shifter.
How about in 7? Mr M. Grady 🤣🥳☝️
Complimenti bellissimo video
auto ist not that bad in modern cars with very fast gearboxes, but it's very bad on old cars. you want to do as little gear changes as possible in old cars, because they are so slow. you can lose seconds per lap there with auto. A good example for that is the lewis hamilton time trial at the nordschleife in that old sauber.
How do I change from AT to MT? Great video!
You should be able to do this in the car settings
@@tidgney I’ve found it already! Thanks a lot!
I thought you can still short shift or shift down a gear on automatic settings manually?
I tried and it didn't work for me :O!
@@tidgney I might be thinking of F1 2020, thanks for the reply.
I wished we had this "semi-automatic" mode in GT Sport. I get overwhelmed concentrating on gearing for long races but I always know when I want to drop down an extra gear for rotation and engine braking or shift up early for traction
Basically GTSport uses the same transmission for both auto and manual modes, so it’s more like a dual clutch vs a manual. I guess i’m nitpicking, lol.
Ahhh, so it's not the transmission. I'm just slow.
Why are games still giving advantage to manual shifters? Does the game give advantage to the supercars with automatics that shift faster then humans? Lets start applying real life to so called simulator games!!!
It would be the same in real life though in a racing situation, it's why F1, GT3 all motorsports is still manual.
@7:55 spanish being spanish
Once you learn manual shifting atomatic is so boring
That's very true however some people can't use manual or prefer not to :D!
Why does short shifting help?
Some power curves on cars mean that going to the limit is slower so short shifting gives you better acceleration :).
@@tidgney oh. Thanks
What's short shifting?
Changing gears before reaching the end of the bar :).
im consistently ~1s slower when using MT
Spent the whole week trying to go under 1.40 at Dragon Trail lol. Think I'll just stick with the automatic transmission for now.
VERY surprised
You should do an attempt in a car that you'd short shift in such as the Corvette?
You short shift the supra to :). Just not as extreme as the Vette :O
One of reason to make manuel and automatic so close is GT sport does not simulate torque converter of automatic transmission, because the Supra isn't have automatic version.
Disvantage of torque converter is limit power output for a automatic transmission vehicle,so......you already know something about truth :
Reality is more cruel, this game is gentle and soft.
imagine using auto
I'm a little saddened,. Would have hoped that GT Sport would advantage manual drivers.
I've watched a video by Super GT where he tips on getting better. Tip 1, go manual.
Seems it's not so.
Biggest advantage is in the racing more than time trial so it is a good tip in reality, but it's not as bad as everyone makes out though :O!
Second viewer. Happy days! 😎
Nice! You were quick!
lol 2 secs ahead of my best time
My best time is 1.37.4. The difference is enormous
@@renatoparedesaraujo 137.9 here lol

@@craighume39 that's a great time With those Keys.
@@craighume39 damn how do you even drive like that? Throttle left stick, shift up and down with R2 and L2 is way more comfortable?
Being manual is the difference between a skilled driver and non skilled
Gtsport no good
Now do a race against real people and stay in auto.
I will give it a try :D!
