I've recently written a book that talks about pedestrianism...so I was blown away to see this 😅 The 'Champion of the World' belt that he's wearing in the image was awarded to him by a guy called Richard Fox of the New York Police Gazette! The Gazette regularly sponsored pedestrian events, among loads of other things, and handed out all sorts of awards like that. Another champion of the time was a guy called John Hughes, who was also a star of the Police Gazette 😁 These races would start at the stroke of midnight - as Monday arrived - and end as midnight the following Saturday arrived, because public entertainment was banned on Sundays!
