    Please enjoy! I apologise for the quaility of the video, I was rather pushed for time with work commitments.

    Don't take this for gospel but after changing my sons gearbox oil (sump off) I was baffled by the 1.6ltrs of oil that is recommend. Just to make sure I drained all the old oil into a pan (give or take a few drops) and measured it....to my amazement there was only 1ltr in the gearbox!? So anyhows I filled it with 1.6ltrs as recommended, but the car still had crunchy gears?? Sometimes making a wuring sound on downshifts. Now because there is so many grey areas because it's a so called life time oil! Anyway there is a drain plug at the back of the diff just below they line of the drive shaft. This is what is used to drain oil when replacing the clutch so not to loose all of the oil! So my thinking is that's why only 1.6ltrs is recommend....(not for sump off) found out that the reverse light switch is the level. Remove plug and undo, take switch out then fill like you've recommended from the breather until oil comes out were the reverse switch, replace switch etc. Make sure car is on the flat! All can be done from above. Now it took 2.5ltrs Fuchs titan sintofluid 75/80, I did leave the sump pan off for ages previously to avoid cross contamination of oil. Now the car has silky gear changes, the worrying part is though why did it only have 1ltr of gearbox oil in it in the first place...no leaks....nothing in service history to say the car had a clutch replacement and basically a low mileage, low keeper car! (1.2 ltd edition) someone's dodgy practice whilst servicing??? Who knows.....hope this helps the grey areas😎.

    There is another hole (on the side of the transmission, access from the wheel arch) that you should open. When this hole leaks you have to stop filling with gear oil.

      It's the level plug not the drainage hole, no drainage hole that's why you take the sump off. Doesn't say much for vauxhalls not fitting a drain plug because they don't think the car will last long enough to need a change

    Hi, Great video. I ain't going to take that underpan out. I am going to take out the oil level plug and put in 1 quart of oil through the vent hole. let some of the old oil drain out through the oil level hole. replace all the plugs. Run the Chevy Sonic (car is built like a lego set, I love it) for a while and repeat the process again until I am comfy that most of the oil is now new oil. I got 200,000 miles on the original MT in which I did the aforementioned at 100,000 miles. clutch system is still original except for my throw out bearing (flood waters kill bearings). Why they did not put a drain plug is beyond me.

    • @richcheema
      @richcheema 2 года назад

      For anyone wondering the process for the easytronic is exactly the same. I did the job today. Just a tip to prevent the metal plate coming down and splashing everywhere, you can run a thin knife blade under the gasket against the aluminium base surface of the gearbox. Leave a few bolts in / hold the plate up while simultaneously gently sliding and prying the plate. You only need to pull it away slightly and leave the knife in place so 90% of the fluid can drain away. Final tip is to just leave the level plug alone. Mine kept feeling like it was cross threading no matter how much I cleaned the plug and mating threads. You can also get more old oil out than he did in the video by lifting the front left wheel (gearbox side) as high as possible

    Hi Tom mate, just a question ............. I have a Vauxhall 1.2 easytronic semi-automatic gearbox 2007 (I bought it 2 years ago) so far so good, the clutch had to be changed, and also the actuator was cleaned and lubricated so it works very smooth now, but my question is: is it a good idea for the next service (in August) to ask the mechanic also to change the gearbox oil as I think it was never changed by the 2 previous owners (the car was just 28.400 miles when I go it) it wasn't much used but I just think despite the low mileage it may need also a gearbox oil change?
    I know sometimes it may be not a good idea to change the oil in the gearbox as it may cause more damage than good, so far I feel the gear changes very smooth without any problem but as said the car is 15 years old and it has been used just very little; so I'd like to know if changing the oil, especially in this type of gearbox won't create problems instead of good results. thanks.

      Use a smaller bar. If you use a small ratchet it isn't easy to break bolts. The bar length is much more important than a torque wreench cause even a long torque wrench, if it's out of spec, will strip bolts. And torque wrenches easily go out of spec if you don't store them properly.

      George Hawkes yes it is. The gearbox is a f13. It has less torque. The gaskets will be the same you can buy a kit on ebay for £6. The gearbox is ancient they were using them in the Astra f and Nova. The only design change is hydraulic concentric slave. Back in the day you could change a clutch without removing the gearbox they had a inspection plate on the bell house and pull out the input shaft.

    Why not pump the old oil out and save you all this mess and work?
    I speak against my past self and have to admit that I caused an absolute fricking mess at a garage once with a Corsa D. It all went everywhere, especially inside my cloths, except in the pan that had to catch it, no a single drop went in there.
    As an alternative to a hard to get by gasket, liquid sealant is your best friend and gives a perfect (perhaps even better) seal. Remember to give it some time to dry.
    Be absolutely sure about the oil that you put in, although it is not a French car, who sometimes have gearboxes that are so incredibly picky about the viscocity
    Never overfill, check with the bolt on the side, and be patient, cold transmission old is slow.

      To be honest probably not, feels like maybe it slides into gears easier but idk I maybe imagining it.

      @@TomsDriveway the oil that came out did look quite fresh (I know, this says nothing about the properties) which may explain the lack of noticeable difference.

    Isn't there a drain plug? Do you have to remove the pan just to drain the oil out? That's poor design
