Comparing the unmodified and unladen toyota to the heavily modified and fully laden Land Rover is comparing apples with oranges. I’ve owned land rovers for over 40 years, from series 3’s to TD5 defenders, and imho they become unreliable when they are either poorly maintained or heavily modified. Obviously yours is definitely well maintained but maybe modified beyond what it was factory designed to be. Btw my current Land Rover is a forward control 101 nearly 50 years old with factory engine, gearbox, etc etc and in the 15 years I have owned it, with regular maintenance, it has never broken down. Good luck with your travels and I hope you stick with the defender.
Awesome! I love seeing them old classics in such good condition! Very best of luck with it and hopefully it serves ye all well, very capable and solid vehicle! Looking forward to more content on the cruiser!
I'm terribly sorry to hear that. A Defender is a car with character. In good and bad times. It's a member of the family- Take it like that. A Toyota is a machine, like a microwave...
We are as well from CH on the panamericana, driving at Home a 110 from 2013. With 3 kids we decided to leave our Landy in Switzerland and bought a Toyota Sequoia from 2010 in the USA, now with 224k miles. Reliable and powerful
That saying rings true " if you want to explore the outback/desert take a land rover, but it you want to come back take a Land cruiser" definitely is the case! Ps the land rover will breakdown before the land cruiser
Congratulations. Definitely not a mistake. My expedition vehicle is a LandCruiser 100. The LandCruiser 80 is generally regarded as being the best of the LandCruisers for overlanding. Have it serviced by an overlanding / off-road specialist if you can. I look forward to future episodes.
As an owner of both a Defender and a Land Cruiser 200.. good choice but the defender is easily fixable.. the 80 series is a great choice for a 2nd car and really a great platform to build on as well. I am in NC if you need any further help with either truck. Also remember that you can rent a Uhaul or Penske moving van and a car trailer almost anywhere.. and just pull the defender to where it needs to be to get fixed at least in the US (not Alaska)..
I was one of the guys, telling you to drive a LC after my self owning a LR Defender 110 and switched to a Land Cruiser HZJ78 2001(in germany called "Buschtaxi" or trooper. They arent perfect as well, but much much more reliable then the for sure beter looking LR Defender. Hope you love your LC as you love the Defender. Welcome in the LC Club. Hope it will stay as reliable for you, as for most LC drivers. But as i know LC arent realy well known in USA. As well, you cant get most parts in Germany over Toyota as i know. There are (like for Defender) spezialysed part sellers... but im not sure about the 80 LC Toyota...
It would be interesting to know what exactly broke. You seem to blame the modifications but were they not supposed to increase reliability? You say the weight, so how much is the weight ? Over GVM? In any case the payload of the LC is lower than the defender. Would aldi be interesting to know how easy it is to buy and register a car as a non resident.
On hard ground when you try to test the Diff Lock, the rear locker sometimes doesn't go in immediately. I drive a LC78 and noticed the same problem. Offroad never had problems so far. Though the factory lockers tend to get stuck when rarely used.
Very nearly unsubscribed at the start of this video ! Until you let us know you were still keeping it and the lc was just a second vehicle. Hope things work out well for your defender and you. ❤
'Chapeau at Salut'. I am interested in seeing your journey and comparisons work out. I have had different vehicles at different times, each suiting different activities. The combination of heavy use, heavy load and off-roading does challenge any vehicle. The land Rover is more at the lighter end and offroad capable, so reducing any of the demands will make life easier for it. The Land Cruiser is heavier and more robust, with different compromises. If it is an option and if I was you I would split some of the load between the two vehicles so that each it used for what it is best at. Let your daughter drive and get a tunnel awning to link the two vehicles when camping. At the end of the day an extensive service network in the USA for a stock petrol is good. Here in the UK the options for an older land rover are enormous, easy and affordable options. I currently have several LR Discovery 1s, but adapted in different ways for towing, camping, utility and offroading. I've had transmission issues with LC as well, which took time, but it's an offroader...
Congratulations, wise choice! I owned a 1996 Toyota Previa, bought it new in The Netherlands and it never disappointed me. Toyota quality is one of the best in the world especially from the nineties 😂👍✌️😍👌
Congratulations with this great car, I’m curious about the setup for your travels definitely, I can imagine you’re looking forward to be back on the road again and feeling enlightened about that you now have options to choose, they’re indeed their opposites and I think you actually will enjoy the LC a lot, the car is exactly what you’re looking for in speed, ease to drive, dependable, great off-roader, keeping it stock will make it run forever probably which contribute to the best experience in travelling, I sold my defender and bought the hilux and didn’t have one second of regrets , wish you and the family lots of joy from now on👍🏻
Congrats on the new LC. Depending on how long you plan on staying in the US, there are A LOT of independent dealers in the US that specializes in LC's and if you plan on outfitting that 80's series you will have a lot of places to choose from and they will be able to get you setup nicely. BTW that 80's series is in immaculate condition, did you buy it from bring a trailer?
@ I know but it’s full time 4wd with unlocked diffs when you lock them on high traction surfaces ie tarmac you get drive line wind up at best and damage at worst.
There is pretty much no where in the world where you won't be able to get that 80series repaired, it's a "global platform" vehicle. Defenders other than nas spec where never sold in the North America, the nas one wouldn't even have any compatibility that would make parts available on the shelf for you there with the problems you've had. The Land Cruiser, most country's Toyota dealers would be able to get the parts for it even if spec differed.
Crazy.... ok first thing first put a hitch in the toy and another FRONT receiver hitch 2" in the Defender because in most of USA (think more then forty states) you can train without problem. if was in you I'll have search for a van 4x4 conversion like quigley (a ford or chevy) Ciao e Buona fortuna!!! PS: in USA think a Land Rover or a Toyota can be a nightmare find spare parts
Great choice well done 👏🏻 🎉❤ Just thing Outback Australia 🇦🇺 that’s why they all changed reliability and ease of parts Nothing worse than breaking down and living in it 🥹
As much as I like the Land Cruiser, I don't get it. 2 vehicles = twice the risk of a break down, and if 1 vehicle break down you are still stuck around the place of the break down for the time of the repair. It means you always need to both drive to move the 2 vehicles, it doubles the fuel cost, etc. And all of that for what? You don't have more living space. So is it just to store some of the stuff?
Sorry, I'll finish the Abo, the Defender was a nice fine car with great character, to give him away with a damaged gear - box, that wasn't necessary. And what you said about the reasons to make the box ready, no - normally they are running longer as the engine, whith about any problems. To repair the gear - box is normally not the problem, or to buy annother box from another Ford, not very expensiv... Thanks, have a nice time, I'm out Peter
expecting a defender puma in fully modified form to be reliable like a stock toyota is a mistake. The puma engine and gearboxes are known for their unreliability. Do an enine and transmission swap and you will be sorted.
How absolutely boring !!! You went from a vehicle with oodles of character , to the everybody and their uncle vanilla paper bag boring predictable BORING unimaginative route !!!! Wow !!!!
Ok in terms of reliability, but not even close to the looks of the legendary classic defender. You will not live your dream driving a toyota; even if it is an LC.

The mighty 80, the best LandCruiser by far.
Wise choose... ✌️👏

"On hard ground when you try to test the Diff Lock," SOLUTION. do not engage the rear diff lock on hard ground.
I'm sorry to hear the news, if there is something that still entertained me from the channel it was the LR Defender. Until never and good luck
Congrats 🙌
Congratulations!

Not as characterful but vastly more reliable.
The danger is this becomes a bit dull akin to booking an Uber?
OMG same year as my 80,altought mine is the diesel ft manual one. Mine is triple locked also. Good choice. 🎉

Well done. Life is about dealing what's in front of you and finding solutions. Two things stand out. 1. its a V8 😁 2. You get to chosse you music. 👍 😅

Don’t don’t lock the diffs on high traction surfaces please as you will damage them.
It's full time 4wd.

What do your Kids think about not having to cuddle in the back seat and having space to themselves?
As much as I like the Land Cruiser, I don't get it.

Of course it's different when your in their shoes with kids and having left everything behind for that trip, but, yeah, boooring car 😞

Enfin la voix de la raison !! Autant j’aime l’image du Defender comme d’un wrangler autant lia fiabilité de Toyota est tellement plus rassurante ….
Traitors how could you move to the other side 😢
Good. Someone nice and interesting. The landy was just a money pit...
How many of your followers were defender people

But 80 series is one of the best 4wds ever made.
Here in Australia it really is the king of offroad.
How absolutely boring !!! You went from a vehicle with oodles of character , to the everybody and their uncle vanilla paper bag boring predictable BORING unimaginative route !!!! Wow !!!!
Only a muppet goes for a landy... Unreliable etc as they have said.
I have a old Hilux... I wouldn't have any British crap ever
People who lost “trust” in their car are the best to make money from……😊
Its the main drive, as a LR Defender owner to upgrade every part you have on this car... Its crazy sometimes
👏🏻🎉

Toyotas are now used by the worlds charities and insurgents. Your Landrover was coming to the end of its life.
Io guido un Toyota land cruiser 100… Toyota sono migliori del defender 110….
Unsubscribed 😂
Ok in terms of reliability, but not even close to the looks of the legendary classic defender. You will not live your dream driving a toyota; even if it is an LC.
Congratulations! The Land Cruiser is clearly the better car. Without any doubt.
Congratulations you now own a proper car not a farm tractor! You can go and torch landy now 😂
Congrats 🙌
