    • @TheKhopesh
      @TheKhopesh 4 месяца назад +87

The reason was because of a design flaw that (with the slightest of impacts) would drive a piece of metal into the gas tank, generating a TON of heat and steel sparks on the way.
If the gas tank was 60% full or less, the fumes in the tank would explode. If over that amount, it tended to light the gas on fire and you bvrn3d @live in your car.
Ford knew, and decided it was cheaper to let people die than do a recall.
They didn't count on some bad odds though, when a family of 5 were in a Pinto that got rear-ended on a mostly-full tank right in front of a guy who was playing around with his 8mm camera. (this was the 70s, long before people normally walked around with any kind of recording media or had corner store security cameras outside the building).
So the news had video of a family of a family with little kids screaming as they r0@st3d @l!ve in a Ford Pinto, and the publicity caused Ford stock to TANK.
They were legally forced to do a recall and install a metal plate thick enough to stop the defect from puncturing the gas tank (the plate both was back then and is now a common feature to prevent exactly this, but Ford wanted to cheap out and save the less-than-1-dollar per car cost of doing so and saving lives).
But yeah, we know EXACTLY why they explode.
Gutsy to run tests with a 70s Pinto though, LOTS of them never went in for the free plate, as it meant spending days or weeks without your car and more than a few people didn't want to spend that long without transportation.

One reason the pure methanol didn't work as well as the ethanol (Everclear) is that the stoichiometric air-to-fuel ratio is lower for methanol than ethanol (and ethanol's is even lower than gasoline). Pump gas has a stoichiometric AFR of about 14.7:1, ethanol has 9:1, and methanol has 6.4:1. If you restrict the airflow to the engine by, for example, applying the choke, or if you increase the size of the jets on the carburetor, it may run quite well on methanol or ethanol.

The stories about older cars running on alcohol in a pinch were because the typical compression, ignition timing, and octane were generally different in those vehicles! You really could run an older vehicle (sometimes) on alcohol. Carburetor, of course, is necessary. Modern cars tend to absolutely not run on alcohol first and foremost due to ignition timing, even though a modern vehicle will adjust ignition timing based on the perceived combust-ability of the fuel it's receiving.

Yes. Generally you want to up the jets like 2 sizes on a a carburetor so it will burn alcohol instead of gas, But Jack is low proof and high sugar. so you might have to go up more, unless you plan to refine it, or add gass or more pure alcohol. It will run for a while, but the real problem is the sugar. Sugar Carnalizes when you cook it. if you think valve deposits are bad with cheap gas, Wait till youre cooking sugar in with youre cylinders .
Oh and for the record, its perfectly leagle to brew shine as a car fuel, but you have to add like 5 percent (i cant remember the exact amount) Gasoline to it, This makes it Undrinkable, and not taxable by the ATF.. It also means you dont have to discard the leads or trailers on the distill.
If youre brewing alcohol in the quantities needed to fuel a car, The ATF will find out, and its best not to have more than a couple of quarts of pure stuff lying around.

so the truth to this is NO you cannot run your vehicle on 35% APV, depending on the type of proof yes it can be flammable but its not flammable enough to have a flash point low enough to where it will completely combust. What you can use in the place of fuel is Everclear considering its literally 95% ethanol or anything with above 80% ethanol is the lowest limit for most commercial vehicles and even then it won't run great it'll either run too rich or too lein and you'll either damage your engine and fuel system doing this or damage your emissions system. Cars are designed for gasoline their computers only look for gasoline of a specific octane and ethanol content in order to work properly.

Methanol is less dense than ethanol so an equivalent volume has less potential energy.
Ethanol is similarly less energy dense than gasoline.
That is to say: you need to up your fuel flow rate to ensure there's enough fuel in the cylinder to make the power needed to move the car.
If you tweak the carburetor you should be able to get it to run smoothly on acetone, methanol, ethanol, and probably the rum too. E85 and E95 are both basically just moonshine, but you need about 170% of the fuel flow rate to get them to work properly.
Also you can make your own ethanol as long as you distill it into a vessel where it'll be contaminated with a lethal poison since you'll have not produced a liquor. That's why the highest grade ethanol you can get for cars from farmers is usually 5% gasoline, diesel, or kerosene.
You can also try denatured ethanol lab solvent which is 100% ethanol but has bromine added to it to make it deadly to drink.

Never drink anything with methanol in it. Though ethanol and methanol are both alcohols, ethanol is distilled from grain, and is relatively safe to consume, methanol is distilled from wood, and is poison. Besides making you very sick, methanol can cause blindness. It is a good idea never to consume any alcohol other than ethanol, because you never know what alcohols they mixed to make that product, or what else they added to it. Even a product that contains ethanol may have additives that could mess with your system, like mouthwash or hand sanitizer. Just play it safe, and only drink alcohol meant for human consumption.

A lot of these old cars can have issues running on alcohols because rubber components from the era can be dissolved or damaged by it. Also, if you adjust the fuel/air mix, you should be able to get it running on most of these!

GMTA. When the windshield washer fluid failed and he said "not enough methanol in it" I thought, ‘well, you could distill it. But they will never do that.’ And then they did. Awesome.
