    I'm about to do this. I'm surprised this is the only video I've found of someone else removing the race this way.

    Thanks for sharing. Used this strategy to cut off a bearing inner race with little to no effort.

    Mike, try just cutting a shallow notch across the race on opposite sides, then impact with a cold chisel in one notch. Start light and build force until it cracks. This is exactly how they make "split bearings".

    Thanks for this video. For the first time, I'm going to have to try this procedure to remove a stuck roller bearing from a small two stroke engine crankshaft. Wish me luck.

      To avoid damage to the shaft, just cut away 90% of the inner race. Then insert a wedge shaped chisel into the groove and smack it with the old ball peen. Normally it will break right off. Making 2 grooves 180 apart makes that work even better.

    HOW NOT TO CUT A BEARING OFF!!!!! You damaged the surface, this is NOT CORRECT.
    Before you damage the surface you smack it with a chisel instead and it falls apart.

      Thank you for your comment. And yes, no damage is good. Sometimes the heat from the operation will even loosen the inner race and it can be pulled or chiseled off. We purposely wanted to show America's working man with minimum tools (who doesn't live in a perfect world) that minimal damage to the shaft is perfectly tolerable as we said. We only show things that have been field proven and time tested many times over the years. Many people don't realize we have been electrical rebuilders for many, many years and because we supply the rebuild kits for this alternator, we don't want any one to think they ruined their core while performing this operation. Little red loctite and we promise : There will be no side effects.

      @@rebuilderinabox It's actually better to cut somewhat sideways instead of up and down. This gives you more control and you don't need to cut through the race as much, possibly cutting the shaft. Then hitting with a chisel it will come right apart. Yes, I've cut into some wheel hubs before I started going sideways and have still reused the hubs but it's best to not to. Going sideways allows you to do more without having to down into the shaft more.

      @@johnjoseph7382 Somewhere in the comments this was already explained. Cutting is not the most common scenario. We show it like this because we sell kits to Americas working man, the mechanics in the trenches with limited tools. Our purpose here is to demonstrate that minimal damage to the shaft is perfectly tolerable. Previously, we've had people give up and send back kits. Sure, there's a lot of things we show you in our videos that are not optimal like we do things here in the shop with all the fancy tools. Our real goal is a successful repair for every size tool box. Angle cut is a great tip, though. See our mantra. alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com/about-us/

    Anyone know how to remove a outer stuck race on a trailer axle I can't take off the hub because of that race being stuck it's like it's welded on. And iv tried using a puller on the hub

  • @graham2631

    As the cut of wheel is round that leaves the far corner uncut. The method l use is the same but make a second cut 90° to the first capping the T removing the holding material. This is very effective on wheel bearings.

    I have a bearing race stuck in a plastic washing machine tub and have tried using a slide hammer and a dremel to remove it, Any suggestions? Btw, I can only get to it from above.

    What were the RPMS for the dremel in order to cut that bearing? I have a 8220 model battery operated, not sure if it will get the job done

    • @rebuilderinabox

      Best thing to do is give it a try. Some good commenters said use a helical cut. Or cut half way thru and smack with a chisel.

      you're overthinking this. dremel wheels GRIND away metal, it doesn't have to be a certain rpm. it's like sandpaper bro. if ur fuckin dremel ran at 200 rpm it might take you a couple days but you'd get it

      Minor shaft damage to a shaft this size is insignificant. More importantly, we dedicate this series of kits and videos in our store to the blue collar worker (who does not have all the fancy tools and puller/press set ups). Please read our on site mission statement. alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com/about-us/.

    If all you have is a dremel, then everything is a cut-off problem. Should just cut a couple of slots on the bearing parallel to the rotation and use them to pull with a bearing splitter. The grooved inner race is pull-able in any case. This way, there would be no damage to anything.

    • @rebuilderinabox
      @rebuilderinabox  4 года назад

      Referencing our mission statement alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com/about-us/
      we didn't consider a bearing splitter to be in the average working man's tool box.Our intention is to offer alternative solutions with only basic tools. Minor damage to the shaft is a moot point and will have NO long term effect. " If all you have is a hammer, everything else starts to look like a nail "

    • @PaulSmith-dy8ul
      @PaulSmith-dy8ul 3 года назад

      Your 100% right. If the average working mans tool box hasn’t got a bearing puller or splitter, he should send the job to someone who has. All you have done is shown him how to do a half arse job, that will potentially give problems in the very near future because of that shaft damage. That shaft can also be spinning at speeds considerably higher than the engine. An out of balance shaft can very quickly destroy whatever it’s connected to. Do it properly, or pay someone else to do it properly. It’s always far cheaper in the long run

      Parallel to the rotation? Aha, if that works I will find out. Interesting. Two slits opposite each other I assume? I guess I will find out. In fact in that case I will use the beast, the Dewalt angle grinder and get down the business.
