The crank rod for this bike was discontinued. I found the last one for sale in the U.S. and then had it professionally rebuilt which took more than 2 weeks. That's why this bike took so long to rebuild. Sorry for the long wait on this one! Hopefully you guys enjoy the video!
Brother it don’t matter what your rebuilding I enjoy every video, your very knowledgeable and inspiring! Love the videos man
I love te yz’s and your vids😍
You do nice work man !!
Love it bro keep the 2 stroke genre coming
Pro-x do a rod kit for the '85.
3:00 I'd really recommend buying a seal puller. They are dirt cheap and you would have had that seal out in seconds without risking damage to the casing mating surfaces. They work good on fork seals too, not just in casings.
Yeah, l feared for the case too. Wood shouldve been used to lever against.
Yep that's my next purchase!
Case looks damaged when he lifted to show no gap between bearing and case
@@2vintage You should also invest in a small press for the amount of times I've watched you pound in bearings with a hammer. Absolute no-no.
@@Canuck_213 no not joe joe. He knows absolutely everything there is to know bro 😂😂 wasting your time. I've tried trust. He gets butt hurt when someone knows more than him.he don't know the definition constructive criticism.he gets mad he's very green.think that's the color of his poo!!
As I said before, these little bikes are especially interesting because I had some good times with my son on one. Best decision I ever made. That was many years ago when parts were plentiful. Shame about your parts problems with this one. Thanks again for your time today and enjoy your weekend.
So much for bedding the rings in before giving it the beans! Still, it's good to see it rebuilt rather than broken for parts.
I took it pretty easy for the first 5 mins lol
Joe Joe doesn't know how to break an Engine at all !!
Had a flashback when you turned into the drive at the end of the test ride coming off the road. I was about 11 at the time and did pretty much the same thing on my 1978 YZ 80 and lost the front end on the blacktop driveway with fresh sealer on it. Good lesson about knobbies on slick surfaces.
Clutch is definitely slipping from 3rd gear on. Might want to tighten it up before you have to put a new clutch in it lol. Otherwise great video! If parts were more available I would def. Consider buying an old yz80. Might have to get me the yz85 since parts are more available. Such fun bikes! Keep up the awesome content bro!
Yeah i thought i could hear that
Ya it’s definitely slipping bad.
There is no tightening it up, time for new friction plates at least, maybe steel plates too.
Well done on your rebuild. You mentioned your front sprocket was worn there's a chance it is not your clutch plates your front sprocket could be just spinning/sleeping
I have a 2000 yz80 and a 2006 yz85. I already rebuilt the whole motor for the 85 and the frame is getting powder coated. The yz80 I cleaned up and replaced plastics. This is my son's beater bike while we are rebuilding the 85. Some parts are even a pain to get for the 2000
This is awesome. Back in the day, I had an '84 YZ 80. Very similar to yours, but colors were yellow and black that year. Seeing this brings back some great memories. Nice job on getting this bike back to running. Thanks for posting.
I used to own a 1988 yz80 and that thing was a blast especially when the powerband kicked in. I hated to get rid of it but hopefully I'll be able to find another just to play around on.
Moterbike Mike here, Me too yellow 84
I had one of these 1985 yz 80s back in the day. Definitely a riper. I actually added a tooth on the front sprocket over stock because it had enough power to easily handle the taller ratio
quick tip for removing old crappy crank seals.. Drill in a wood screw into it and rip it out with some vice grips.
these little 2-cycles are so much fun. My daughter has a Suzuki LT80 quad, almost a pocket 4-wheeler, and it is stupid fast.
I love LT80’s! They will surprise you. They haul an adult around like nobody’s business!
@@lorollinls yes they will! I took my Yamaha Warrior, the LT 80 and and one of my best friends up to the farm a couple years ago. He is 6'2" tall, and the image of him on that little quad reminds me of Artie Johnson, on Laugh In, on that tricycle. He was flying across the property, hitting burms and flying through the air, his knees almost in his face, screaming like a little girl. I'd give anything now to have had a video of that. Just remembering it has me in the floor in stitches.
This was the first dirtbike i ever got to see close up when I was a kid. They really do rip for an 80! Remember that movie Dirtbike kid? The kid from A Christmas Story gets a Yamaha another kid throws away. puts lights on it, fixes it up and it comes to life lol
Man ur top of these rebuilds like nobody business keep it up im learning a lot so i wont have to have anyone else work on my stuff u teach good
He teaches how Not to do it. I laugh soooo hard at this guy.experienced mechanics bust his balls.dont ever hit a bearing with steel Bro. they're pressed fit bearing's not hammer Time!!
I love 80s they always surprise me on how fast they are ! Good job saving this one !
Sounds like clutch slipping from 3rd and up. Great video anyways.
Epoxi is a risky decision for such an important role and the original cause that killed the engine. It will tend to fail over time. A mechanical interference solution would be better. Keep up the 2t resurrection!
shouldnt there be a slot for the propellor to grab the shaft?
I would like to have an old 80 yz but that last connecting rod and no cranks really puts me off. Being old it might last the rest of my days but would be fun. Looked like over 70 on the highway and more than 60 down the field, enough to bust your butt real good. It needed the rear suspension hardened up for your weight.
You should find a cheap oven for your garage. Use that to heat the cases. That's what I do anyway. Works great
Hey there senior, ya'll need a slide hammer seal puller. With a good quality slide hammer they will also remove bearings and bushings.
Get yourself a seal puller, makes that job MUCH easier. Also, it kills me that you don't clean up those parts before putting new parts in. I would be worried about dirt getting into the new parts. It is just so much nicer to work with clean parts. Put that case in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes and that frozen bearing will fall into place.
The cleaning part is so true... I always clean stuff up and if it's torn apart that much I sometimes paint stuff
He's a hack....
@@johncoleman2495 he sabotaging every engine he builds so they'll come back and make more unhonest money.itll bite him in long run watch and see
Quick tip for putting in cranks or really anything with bearings or important parts like that. When you freeze them put some WD40 on the bearings etc so when the part unthaws the condensation doesn’t cause rust. Love the vids keep up the good work🤍
That's a good idea! Not being a smart ass but the word you want is just - thaw. The "un" is unnecessary. My wife says unthaw all the time and it makes me laugh
Keep doing what you're doing man. Keep learning and bringing these older machines back to life. Love to see it. You remind me of myself and my good friend. We ran a shop a long while back (90s through 00s) and I've had the pleasure of working on about 99% of the bikes you've done on your channel... and many others. Watching your vids brings back great memories. I still wrench and ride, but the wrenching part is only maintenance now on the few machines I own... and I guess vicariously through channels like yours.
11yr old me loved/loves this bike. the early-mid ‘90s stock YZ80s were dogs, but they did look super cool. nice work, again
Man I love the sound of those 80cc bikes, they're so crisp
Hey man this yz80 brings back memories i used to have one but got stolen off me they are one of the coolest dirt bikes hey have that unique sound, really enjoy watching the rebuilds, have you got plans for any inline 4 vintage rebuilds or tunes?
I love rebuilding 2 stroke motors, relaxing
I've watched you for a long time now and I've noticed that you never oil your threads for torquing. That's a must. Always use oil, especially with head bolts
I bought a 1997 YZ80 frame and am putting a YZ125 engine in it and just watching this helped show me more about this bike and I want to thank you!
In 1999, I bought a brand new kx 80, I was 17, my little buddy got 1 of these to ride with me. The sound of that 3ngine brings back alot of memories. My 99 kx 80 was smooth and fast, but the Yz 80 was nasty! The power band kicks in so fast, it felt so weird after riding the 99 kx. Which was a little faster on top end I thi k I got the kx 80 to go about 60mph if I remember correctly. Cool video, thanks for Sharing!
This was the first bike I ever owned brings back good memories!
86 yz 80 my first bike.
Air fuel screw is a little lean, it's got that lean bumble sound.
Had an 82 YZ80. Brings back good memories
It is like you are riding your first 2 stroke. I've ridden a lot (75-100) of 2 stroke bikes both on and off road and the YZ80 was close to the most impressive for powerband. The Maico 490 was also a scary ass arm jerker on powerband but the Yamaha V4 RZV500R is just completely insane and wants to rip your hands off the hand grips.
My H2 750 was a handful of bike, still is. Kept up with my stock CBX no problem.
The TZ750 will give you a similar feeling lol. I got the chance to race one in road race trim at Summit Point. Wish I had one today. Always have loved 2 strokes.
I had a buddy get that bike, brand new in 85. It was cherry, and he took care of it. He joined the navy, went to fight for Cheney oil in the middle east..not sure if he made it back, but the elite mans oil is secure....
Clutch is slipping a bit and idle is lil high brother. Two small adjustments and it’s ready.
15:08 you're going to fry that engine again because of an 80 dollars part. 22W-12450-00 is the p/n for that impeller.
I was thinking the same thing. 🤦♂️
I'm sure there isn't any way to "glue" a water pump together...js
I had that exact bike as a kid. It sounds like your clutch is slipping, fix that up and it will pull harder. Also that exhaust leak where the pipe meets the head was a common problem, I can see yours leaking from the smoke when you were in the garage, that will take a little power away too. There were some copper crush gaskets that would seal that up for a while but they will eventually wear through, and I'm not sure where you would buy them these days. High temp sealant might work for a while.
Those little YZs are super quick and lots of power.
My dad used to have that same bike bored 3rd over to 110ccs that thing was a beast
Its great you take the time to do shit right, find the correct parts at any cost..these parts are coming super hard to find more each an every day
Yes they are!
I bought that bike for my lil brother back in 1985 . It was 900 buck . What a screamer that was.
My fricken childhood. My buddy had a 2001 Yz 80 and I had this same exact bike. Brought a huge smile to my face man the sound.
Use map gas. Burns hotter than the blue tank. A tad more heat= tad more expansion = less hammering on bearing
I always use gasket maker or case sealant on the intake gaskets on both sides on all 2 strokes, because with out it, it will leak cause it to run lean.. or leaner than you thought. If you leak down test the motor it will tell you if your intake, cases, cylinder to cases, and head are leaking/ not holding the pressure it needs to lube bottom of the crank case
Wonder how much hp that little over-bored 80cc engine puts out? I'd guess no more than 17-18 but I could be wrong. These 2 stroke mini bikes are high enough strung though, to where they can put a hurting on even a grown up if not respected! Great work bringing this engine back from the dead!
Stock, the yz80 was making 16hp in 1985.
I’d be hyped to see you get a sand blaster or vapor blaster to really clean up the parts
The first dirtbike I was on was a 1986 YZ80 yellow and black one. it scared the crap out of me it was so fast! once that power band kicked in.. might have been an 85.. i can't hardly remember? i was 11, and I'm like almost 40 now.. time fly's! and I also had an 84 too with the metal gas tank.. it was gave to me.. and just needed a carburetor. never could get it running.. and gave it back to my friends for parts.. for the other yellow and black one.
You see how people treated each other back then.. that's true friendship. we just gave each other stuff! it wasn't ever about money... it was about the fun of having a dirtbike. and especially to keep one running! lol
Might be just me, but I think the clutch was slipping , hard to tell in the video. You need 1/8th of an inch free play in your cable at the perch. Also before you put your seals in you should have put 2 stroke oil on your bearings.
I did,I oiled everything up very well!
@@2vintagebut forgot to oil the Piston dry sounding going in. Oh I'm talking the cold Engine revving out Guy 😂😂😂 you have a Rev fetish. Rev the engine up to higher Rpms NoT Rev out of Rpms. 😂 You're so green dude that's the color of your poo!!
I really enjoy watching you work on the engines of these machines . I build vintage scooters up , but the engines are beyond me . I'm learning gradually . Thanks so much .
I had an 89 yz80 when i was 13 and this brings back some memories.
Our son had an 88 back in the day. Never had to do anything to it. Many trophies. It was very loud as well. Probably infuriated the neighbors haha. Great vid.
I had one exactly like this that was completely rebuilt , it was a monster and outran most bigger bikes with an ease
my first bike was a 1990 yz85. That bike brings back fond memories.
Don't you hear the clutch slipping?
Turn down the idle too.
Also that bike is the same bike that was used in a movie called The Dirt Bike Kid released in 1985. Great childhood movie for me. You should check it out
awesome movie same kid from Christmas story
had me for a second there.... you know exactly what your doing..... well done buddy
This is the perfect candidate for a nice build joe! Ide like to see a fmf fatty or even a gold series. Maybe some vforce 3 reeds, a little port and polish work. Maybe a 100cc kit. Oh yeah
Love seeing how many old units you save🤙 keep it up man!
It's so cool how all the part work in sync with each other
I have great memories ripping around my YZ. Cool to hear that sound again.
All you need is 2 big round lamps on the front plate and it'll be the same as the movie the dirtbike kid 😁 frigging cool as fk 👍
Haha yep
I would never trust epoxy on such an important part. If that impeller stopped for 3 mins it would probably seize up or definitely over heat
That what I was thinking as well....but Joe still wet around the ears.... he'll learn...maybe use flex tape and prolong oil treatment 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, I completely agree with you. Besides, it was what originally killed the engine
I just shook my head at that moment in the video 🤦♂️
Exactly what I was thinking as well!! I would of looked to putting a roll through it. What can we expect out of this. Guy he never lets 1 warm up even on a fresh rebuild. Let's Rev to the moon on start up it will help it sooo much.never in my life seen such idiotic ways. He calls it rev out.needs to learn English language . Calls it Rev out 😂😂😂 I watch for a laugh!! I laugh so much watching I'm addicted to making fun and the laughter!!
I bought THIS bike and rode it in sand trails all day. As well as many hours of light trail riding. It held up and is still in the bike with its next owner. I personally would have never done a hack job like that, but it worked.
that water pump will be the end of that bike. The epoxy will fail, 100% sure of it. Epoxy is way over used and trusted for some reason. need to make a keyway to be safe.
You need to invest in a seal puller..you do enough to make it worth it...def one of my fav channels..you put out more content than just about anyone... Love it
And after I said that I read comments after the video lol 👍
30:47 people that aren’t familiar with em would be surprised how much power they have. I’ve had several back when i was little. But you can have a good time on those little bitty bikes. In ways they are more fun than a big bike cause they have plenty of power and they have no weight so you can fling em around anyway you want just about.
This bike brings back memories. These smaller engines like 32:1 mixture better.
Haha you looked like a giant on this joe great fix mate cracking little bike and quite nippy for what it is take care man great content 🔧🔧👍👌🔧
Glad to see you get that old bike going...
It snaps quick when you hit the throttle no bog no lack instant power just like a yz should
Yeah very snappy
Again thanks man , I continue to learn more and more about small motors from every video,,keep the videos coming 😊😁
Joe, I’m sure you have this question before. Why don’t you use a toaster oven to heat up your quesadillas that hold bearings? Application of bearings should go smoothly from here.
that is a nice bike. idk if i like the red and white better or the yellow and black. i like them both. i like how they changed it up over the years from yellow and black to red and white and then the blue and white still to this day.
That was my 1st brand new bike when I was 9 years old. It was such a big bike back then.
1980's yz's were crazy fast and tough has dirt. loved every minute riding them.
DO ANOTHER VIDEO ON THE WORST ATV EVERY PLEASEEE!!! I LOVE IT AND I WANT TO SEE IT MOVING!
I've been absolutely loving your vids lately man. I just started youtube-ing seriously in the last year or so and your style + content reminds me a lot of my own, but you actually have viewers :p Keep on wrenching!
The bike from The Dirt Bike Kid movie!!My fav growing up.
I've said it many times...when you have something completely apart why not thoroughly clean everything like engine and frame then paint it to look new! Takes no time to do and costs hardly nothing. Everything of yours would look so much better
Or at least touch everything up
We need that beautiful power band footage
Just wanna say great rebuild and restoration. However, I would never recommend a Wiseco piston on a rebuild like this for a number of reasons but mostly because they're best suited for putting a handful of hours on them then rebuilding the top end. An OEM would actually be better for playing around on and not racing. Just my opinion and based on my experience.
My first bike was a 1989 yz80... good memories. you're doing great, man. Love your vids
That would be such a fun little play bike.
You should hit up Kaplan America for some of these old 2 stokes you have , it would be a cool collaboration between biketubers Ken has a wealth of knowledge !
Clutch is slipping, idle is WAY too high, might be running lean also !
Freaking genius, I'm trying to tell you,💪😎☮️
Yamaha 80 cool little dirt bike runs smoothly now great bike macnic
Sounds excellent. Nothing like the sound of a 2 cycle !! Nice job !!
Good job! I think the clutch is slipping bad.
Your gonna snap a case prying on it with a screwdriver to get the seals out. Put a piece of wood across it and pry against the wood not the case.
Always wanted a YZ80 in the 1970s👍👍👍
Yes it does sound fantastic, nice job brother! Be safe :)
My first ever proper dirt bike was this exact model , brings back some cool memory’s 👌🇬🇧
You can get a running “fresh rebuild” yz85 motor (top&Bottom)for $800-$1000. At this point may have been cheaper?
Bro you really know your way around bikes👍
Feel sorry for those engine cases, and you totally damaged those bearings bearing them in , use that crank tool you have, it supports the back side so you don’t crack the cases
If you heat the case haves in the oven face down, the bearings will fall out as it's heating up. Install the same only heat case face up then the frozen bearings will fall in with no effort and it will be easier on the case and bearings.
I has a 1986 YZ80 back in the day. It was a fun bike!
I love these wheelie machines good job
Seeing the epoxy part was disappointing. Glad to see it running though.
There are no parts for sale for this bike. Very hard to find a new waterpump
@@2vintage Understood. You got crazy lucky fining that crank to begin with. I bet that power and is fun with that bike.
@@2vintage found it the first place I looked for $60. Same thing with all the correct engine gaskets. You were just too cheap to buy them. And don't know enough to understand the consequences of deleting them. And since you just pass these things along to someone else (at a profit) you don't care. It's all about the views, likes and subscribers right Joey....
@@johncoleman2495 he does not know how to do things properly. he's just setting ppl up for Future money. being honest parts changer is not his way. he'll never be a mechanic at this rate of learning the hard way. He's lazy and a lier. He's gonna run across the wrong red neck 1 day that'll give him what he deserves.that hasn't happened yet I'm guessing!!
Sounds to me like the clutches might be slipping going threw the gears could be wrong though wouldn't be the first time.
The 87 is my second favorite 80cc mx bike
