HOW To Fly a Bush Plane Into a STEEP Runway

- Enjoy the views and shoots from some of the most beautiful places in West Papua.
The runway we're landing on is called Sipogol and it's located along a ridgeline. Landing at late mornings are usually not possible due to dangerous up valley winds and crosswinds. Its steep section allows for the plane to slow down quickly and a lot of power is needed to reach the top. Enjoy the stunning views!! Air America style!
Big thanks to Hartley and Patrick for allowing me to record the formation shots and John Knox for helping me out with the cameras.

Pure flying visuals, no theatrics. As a pilot, I can feel myself in his seat. Thanks.
The skill to land safely and depart from that location is nothing less than highest level !
Thank you Glenn! Cameras never make it justice. I'm happy you could see the real difficulty of landing on a runway of this sort. Cheers!
Taking off seems a lot easier.
Naa its easy
No worries there M8, you'd started to work at 150 mts😅
The _mighty mighty_ Pilatus Porter PC-6 ! Great video, Dude.

unreal - and that lady was singing exactly what I was thinking - uncanny!
Back in 1978, Republic of Vietman, I was a flight engineer on a HH43B Kaman Huskie (rescue and recovery chopper) I was at that time stationed at Cham Ran Bay- My last mission I was a part of was one of these Pilatus PT6, they took off out Nha Trang just north of us and their engine fuel starved. They ditched in the South China Sea, just off the Beach at Cham Ran Bay. Two men lived to try it again...The next day I returned to my wife in the states. Wilber
It's my all-time favorite aircraft, spent 500hrs in them.. Always heard the legends of pilots bailing out, then later finding the plane landed fine in a field, unpiloted, cool if true (easy to believe)!.. THANKYOU for your service 🤙
@@bryanreeme8584 You’re welcome, I’d do it all over again. Wilber
@@bryanreeme8584 a question or 2.....I've heard they are a handful, I have no idea,, I this true? Was the transition to the porter taxing?
Thank you for any information you care to share!
@@ronnieandpatriciamackinnon4958 I've never piloted one, & only landed in one a few times... I jumped from them, but our pilots loved them! ..I'm no pilot either, only flown what people let me 😁... most impressive aircraft though!
Haha,thank you,,500 hrs in them u said,,I assumed piloting!!
Great job! Not much margin for error there. That place looks spectacular. It must be great flying there every day.
Hey Donald. Thank you! I never get bored!
awesome flying :) All the best. Be safe
Thanks so much Henderson!
Holey moley that introduction is like a soothing dream.
Thanks Knut! Means a lot coming from you!
Not many pilots have had the joy of flying a Porter. I was lucky enough to own and fly one. These are the most amazing airplanes in the world. I’ll always look back at the memories with a smile😊. S/N 2040 N3608R
Thanks for sharing! Indeed the Porters are the most amazing and well suited machines for this kinda flying. You are a lucky guy to have own one! Where you running her on a drop zone? Cheers 🍻
You have great taste in music! amazing video! thanks for sharing

@@APilotsHome well keep up the videos. I am a pilot in the US: love my job, but there is true freedom and skill displayed in your work and you get to experience a side of aviation most will never know. Fly safe!
Will do! Safe flying GRB. My dream is to move to the US one day! Thanks again for your kind messages 🙏👍
What a well made film, beautiful shots, excellent flying.
Thanks so much for that!
Awesome stuff, thanks. Can't say I think much of the go-around prospects at that strip 😮😁
Thanks so much and great observation! The only thing you can do is a sharp left or right turn on short final.
“Notice how many runways are located along the valleys” facetious indeed.
Great video … and scary. As a passenger, I’d be cool as a cucumber- if heavily sedated.
Great video and even better pilotage.
Thanks so much 👍🙏 cheers!

Amazing flying
Thanks from India for this humanitarian service.
Just discovered your incredible channel. Absolutely amazing views, and in 4k too. Love the music in this one. Can't wait to see more!
Have you ever stayed overnight in one of those villages? Would be interesting to see what life is like for them and understand what your flights mean to them.
Hey! Thanks so much for the message. More vids will come. I never had the chance to stay over in a village since we have busy schedules sometimes but it's on my bucket list!
It would be nice to see a full journey vlog in parts.

Thanks Lord Jesus For This Land. I Hope Blessing This Land. West Papua!
absolutely amazing
I was surprised that the plane landed on a small slope in the mountains. I am amazed at the skill of the pilots and admire them. I am watching this wonderful video in Japan.
Thanks so much for your kind comment!

God bless you too sir!
Thank you sir for making these videos with amazing and calm music.
What a wonderful video! Great work. Many Happy Landings, Always!
Thanks to your flying skills which bring civilization to some of the remotest locations on the planet.
I did some flying out of Port Moresby and Goroka while living in PNG. On the advice of an Air Niugini Captain, I opted for a PNG Student Licence (I had an Unrestricted Licence with Aerobatic endorsement, with a fair few hours behind me - best advice I ever had). The country is beautiful, the flying experience absolutely stunning and I was (still am); in absolute awe of the pilots that fly there regularly. This video reminds me of many of the “cleared patches of jungle” I flew into under “instruction” from am experienced bush pilot - one had a red traffic cone halfway down the slope - if you could just see the cone through the mist, you could “safely” take off and climb out to the right once you “fell over” the sheer cliff drop off at the end of the dirt.
These pilots have my absolute admiration for their skills and guts to fly there daily - one experience sticks in my mind as a reminder of how dangerous / fatal any loss of concentration could be - flying back to Moresby from the Highlands, just above solid cloud cover, we passed a few hundred feet away from a single tree sticking out of the clouds - the mountains either side of the (unseen, cloud covered) valley we were following were not very far away or below us - navigation error or engine failure was NOT an option.
Those Pilatus machines are awesome. I've flown De Haviland Canada products, the Beaver, Otter, and Twin Otter, which is also PT-6 powered. That strip would be within my comfort zone in any of those airplanes. Beautiful place.
Well done. It seems those plains can take off / land on a football field. But: what about the cross winds?
@@ms-jl6dl Like everything else involving airplanes, if you aren't sure it's safe, don't do it.
How wonderful is this. Thank you for giving us. It is a work of art.
Merci pilote de .nous montrer aussi les villageois .bravo pilote❤😊
What a great job!
Beats the heck out of working at Walmart.
One more wonderful video. Please don't stop filming !
Btw, i like your new avatar. A nice homage to the Pilatus logo.
I think, it's not too similar, so no problem, ha ha...😉
Greetings from Switzerland, where this epic plane was born !
Thank you so much for your message! More vids will come. Glad you liked my new logo. Yes, it's an homage to the airplane manufacturer. Hope to one day visit the country. Cheers!
Really nice video. The music adds a majestic quality to the grandeur of the visuals.
Thanks so much Grant 🙏
Just a typical day back in the 60s and 70s for Air America and CAT pilots. Landing strips like this were common all over northern Laos during the Secret War.
You forgot the CAS pilots
@@rolandlustenberger5249 Yes definitely the CAS pilots too! i.e. - The late Dave Khouba.
Heroin is one helluva drug
Interesting that you mentioned David Kouba. I have been working with him in Laos
@@rolandlustenberger5249 That is wonderful. In what capacity?
Stunning scenery and really skilled mountain flying Some of the best memories and satisfaction you'll have in your career.
I've flown C130's into mountain strips in PNG, so have some inkling as to the challenges. Operating the Porter - on the edge - is both mesmerising and captivating. Aviation as an Artform. Serious stuff.
I do have to profess though, in the opening frames of formation flying, I was on the edge of my seat. I do not wish to be negative, I only wish you well. But: Please, please strive not get below Lead , even when flying as loose as this appears.
-------- Lead sees the ridge line, You see the Lead,,,,,,,, and the Ridge? well, that Ridge/ Tree is lookin' right at You. Stay high!
Great operation though, keep it coming and keep on enjoying it!
Thank you for your comments Bob. Really appreciated! And thanks for sharing some of your flying. I can imagine it must have been amazing to fly a C130 in PNG.
I don't have much formation flying and I take your feedback seriously. Like you said, it was loose flying and we rarely have an opportunity to do formation. Clearing ridges is to be taken seriously and I value your opinion.
More videos will come soon! Hope to hear from you on other videos!
Keep well!
Very well done! Thank you!!
I enjoy your videos a lot. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much 🙏
Glad to see you put Mr Knox to work. Nice video bru 🤙
Thanks bru! Had to give him a little taste of real flying Hahaha 🤣
How hard it would be to carry luggage in such an environment without you.
It is a wonderful job, flying through beautiful nature and carrying the luggage of people waiting there.
But it is also a dangerous job with very severe consequences if there is an accident in such a place.
Please be careful of the weather and the condition of your PC-6.
Wishing you and those around you safety and happiness.
Thank you so much for your kind message ☺️🙏
Juste magnifique, la VRAIE, la VERITABLE aviation.
So familiar. Thanks.
Pleasure Ron!
Superb flying.
Thank you Nimrod!
Waw keren...luar biasa Capt. Andre. I love it God bless
Thank you Om Hartley! GBY too!
Cool vid mate, thanks 👌
Incredible service, scenery, flying skill, video production & aircraftt manufacturer. Thanks for sharing from Michigan U.S.A.
Thanks so much Dean! Really appreciate your words 🙏
Tremendous!! Made an incredibly difficult and dynamic landing look easy and ordinary. I like how you flew an extended downwind allowing ample time on final to make sure everything was just right.
Thank you! Cameras never make it justice. I'm happy to read your post. Indeed it is a very technical landing and in takes years before one can safely land a plane consistently in a runway of this sort. Cheers!
Incredible video once again!
Bravo!
Each time you surprise me more! You touched my heart! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing journey! Beautiful music
Obrigado querida mana🙏❤️
Amazing.
