My favorites were the long versions with four windows between the doors as they had a deeper growl of the engines.

I drove the 78's slope backs, and the lift U equipped 79's, til well into the 90's. I still think that their very modern looking, and drove well. My only complaint was the standard manual adjusted seat, that thing was hard!

@MrStarwarsinc RTS 03's usually have sliding rear doors but the later RTS Buses all have fold out rear doors. Green Lines in New York had 15 RTS 03's which all had sliding rear doors and other RTS 03's I've seen on the web had the same kind of doors but the RTS's you're talking about are 04 and 06.

Cool man the Detroit 8V71, and 8V92 engines are my most favorite engines for buses. They sound real hardcore!

Unfortunately, it hasn't been moved for ten years at Northwest. It would be a task to even get the thing moving again.

@Nabinut Green Lines was one of those that were retrofitted but the back where there's the vent on black was shorter leaving a big white gap between the bottom half of the bus and the vent unlike RTS 04's which had that whole area covered.

@LPenn0505 some states didn't require all buses in a fleet to have wheel chair lifts till at least the early to mid 90's. before then you had to request a wheel chair bus if you needed one.

@Transitrider - Yeah it seems the rear door interlock has been disabled for this use which would not be surprising at all.

Yea, I remembered the GMC RTS and rode the old route 55 Medicine Lake Lines. The wheelchair lift in the rear door act like a stairwell lift. Also the old University of Minnesota GMC RTS buses (old route 52 and 13) does that have a problem a stairwell lift in the rear door. All old GMC RTS sold or scraped.

MCTS had 150 RTS buses 145 of them had an 8v71 or an 8v92 Diesel engine the five that didn’t which was 3220-3224 had a 6v92 diesel like the Neoplan N416 3300-3334 and the Neoplan AN440 3620-3656 I remember in 2000 MCTS deleted these buses off their roster when they continued the buy the New Flyer D40LFs 4300-4389 and now everything MCTS buys is only New Flyer buses

Man I remember when those ol girls were Rollin in Ocean City, Maryland day and night round 1994. Rusty from the salt air, graffiti on the window, Banged up, 8v71 Detroits just a tick ticking on their last legs. I was 12 at the time and asked a driver "how's the breakdown record?" He said "Kid, these things have been shit houses on wheels since they were five years old but not one has come home on the hook down here" hahahahahaha

Dear transit Watchers,In my Opinion,We have RTS` in Amherst, and they RE BETTER,PLUS THE BACK DOORS STICK OUT,NOT SLIDE TO THE SIDE

The last time I rode on them buses, it was in 1991 and that was the year MTA scraped those buses. I didn't like the automatic rear doors because they can close on you without a warming. It wasn't any space between the fire wall and the wheel well. Yeah, it was cramped back there.

Wonder if the MTA is going to fix this bus. It's been sitting in the same spot at Northwest Division for at least 4 years. Looks like it's being used for junk storage. Such a shame!
