Very impressive looking and well detailed SP GS 4 class locomotive model, I hope to be able to purchase one of these Mth GS 4 models at some point in the future.
MTH makes great engines and I always loved their station features. I have a AB set of ATSF F units in classic warbonnet and I love them. The only downside with mth trains, at least from my experience. Is the super capacitors on the boards tend to burn out or end up being defective from factory. Although the set I bought was off ebay, it was listed as new and sold from a licensed MTH dealer. So I was very disappointed that I had to repair it out of the box. But now that it is fixed. I am not looking back. Excellent model, excellent features. Best functions on the market. My top 2 train makers are Broadway Limited Imports and MTH. With BLI winning because they tend to pack in a little more detail where it counts and because I have never had a problem with any of my BLI engines *knock on wood* ;)
28 Southern Pacific GS-4s were build by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio, engines 4430-4457, 27 were scrapped except 4449. 4449 was saved, retired from Sp on October 2nd, 1957, and donated to Oaks Park in Portland, Oregon in 1958 for display until 1974. 4449 was moved under steam on April 21st, 1975 while she was painted Red, White and Blue for American Freedom Train 🇺🇸
You can tell MTH is used to making O Scale stuff, because they spent all that time programming and recording like 30 different station sounds nobody's gonna use, but didn't notice that there's like 2 scale feet between the lead and main driver.
How well does the model pull? Will it pull a full set of MTH Daylight cars up, say a 1% grade? 2%? The other (non Mars) lights flickering is annoying, as is the stupid chatter from the sound decoder, but I guess this is inevitable as the company's roots is competing with Lionel. Low speed performance doesn't look very impressive. Hopefully there will be improvements in the forthcoming re-rerun, such as the errors with the Daylight logo. I wish the City of Portland plaque would be optional for those of us modeling the 1950s. If they provide another number besides 4449, it should definately be omitted. And yes, I'm a rivet counter, and proud of it. An optional GS-5 (4458 or 4459) with roller bearing trailing and tender trucks would be a welcome addition.
Great Video !!! The sound the locomotive makes the bell and the whistle is that the way it came or did you add that into the video I know these locomotive these days come with sound but this sound stood out from the rest
The winged Daylight logo on the leading edge of the skirts should show the wings trailing on each side. In other words, they are incorrect on this HO model.
John McCardell Yea i traced down the serial number and found that out. I ended up getting a bachmann one new real cheap and did I suped it up. The only thing it's doesn't have is the Mars light. Oh well. Anyone interested in a 3 rail model daylight?? I'll cut u a deal!!?
I recently bought the 2 rail small lettering version on Ebay, trying to use my NCE on this is frustrating, its not really DCC friendly. I also am not really impressed with the detail quality either, if i had to buy another Daylight 4449 i might go with another and install a Loksound. Not too keen on having to buy DCS just to get everything out of one locomotive.
Fuzion Hyper 2019 very rare.... I can’t find one at a reasonable price online at all. I did hear in a recent video on this channel that they might rerelease them along with their berkshires.
You are such a blessing sir, 7 years later and you're helping me figure out how this daylight actually works 🙏
The finest out of the box steam locomotive I have ever owned.
Hoping to get one of these sometime, my all time favorite locomotive!! Awesome model

It looks great, but there is one thing missing with the steam locomotive and that is the extra water tender.
The 611 has a extra water tender with it.

Yes, MTH supports (plain) DC, DCC, and their own proprietary system.
can you give a full look at the ho scale layout?

+Clinton Wurzbach all the sound is factory from MTH

In terms of detail in this locomotive, BLI or MTH?. Thanks.

Anonymous Loner yea

Daylight Logo On The Skirts Are Too High.

It doesn't have a horn?
Isn’t the Mth 4449 Rare?
