Another great one! My bf is an avid fisherman, and I am an avid Picker...So after a day of picking, he always asks me "good fishin' today? Get a big one?" Sometimes I catch the prize, some days just some sun fish, but I enjoy every minute of it and keep plugging along! 🐠
Shipping is sort of like cooking a good medium rare steak. Ya kinda get a feel for it after a while. Your system seems to be good. And by the way we do try to make a couple of bucks on shipping. Mainly because of cost of shipping materials and we do a good job on packing and that time is valuable.
Absolutely right, Mike. We can all shop around other pickers and still do well. How?, by being more curious, more knowledgeable, and being more willing to sell beyond the narrow confines of niches. I used to have niches of my own, but then I moved to a small town with fewer thrift stores and less offerings in my chosen niches. After watching you and other RUclips pickers, I broadened my approach and I’m doing better than ever. There’s value you in some of the most unlikely things, but you have to be curious enough to look things up. I am constantly surprised.
I recently went back to calculated shipping, Sales have declined a bit, but I was getting frustrated losing money on shipping, As luck would have it, most of my sales were from the west coast, and I live on the east coast.
I live in bay area and prices are always so absorbent. Saw some Funko pops today that were $12. That's nearly retail. Seems one of their pricing people literally matching prices they see on eBay. Paintings for $25+, manga books for $6 each. I'm finding less and less each day. That said, I can't go at start of day so maybe getting scraps from the professional pickers. But as you said. I'm learning more and more each day. I'm getting faster at going through stores too.
I've heard many times that by 3:30 no new stock. But at my Savers I see them bring out carts at all hours. Even 6pm. So I originally ignored the recommendation. But since I feel like mostly garbage at this point I should finally listen. 🤣✌️
I estimate shipping and charge flat rates - usually 5 or 6 for First Class and 10 or 12 for Priority, unless it's heavier. Then I weigh and round up. I occasionally lose a little bit but make up for it elsewhere. BTW - PirateShip will let you pick Media Mail under Extra Services, but it only shows up when you're actually purchasing the postage, not checking the rates.
Ronnie James Dio grew up in Cortland NY which is not far from me. They have a Dio Ave there and his brother ran a diner. I met him once and he looks just like his departed brother.
Any time that I have used calculated shipping I have ended up losing money because it doesn’t account for the supplies that I buy, so I use whatever amount I choose. Although I have lost a few bucks using that method as well.
I wish we had a Saver’s in Ga! If you notice, all but the lamps in this video were purchased at Savers. I use to get some good finds at Salvation Army until they closed the store. There is one other Salvation Army in my area but their prices are abysmal. The only other Thrift stores in my area are the ones raising money for causes, ie Humane Society and so their prices are extremely high because they are trying to raise as much money as possible for their charity. Not good for resellers. Goodwills are our only real choice as far as thrift stores go. Even the Habitat restore in our part of Ga carries only furniture and fixtures. No small goods.
I know so many areas are limited in sources. I'm in NC Jacksonville today and it is different. Today we hit some local garage sales. One was a community sale that was very good. It's out there, but can be spotty at times in many areas. Thank you for watching. Watch for a video in the next month on my Son-In Law and I at garage sales.
15:32 It is amazing how many people miss that the bottoms of lamps light up. I keep an eye out for that because I have, maybe 5 times in the past 10 years, when I'm at someone's house, will ask them if their lamps light up on the bottom and they say no, then they look and see that yes, they do and they had no clue. I also have pointed this out twice to people on RUclips who are doing haul videos and I ask them if their lamps light up on the bottom and they have said they do not and then they find out that yes, they do. It's hilarious. I grew up in a house with a lamp that lit up in the bottom and you could light the bottom only, the top only or both at once. But it amazes me when people don't know that their lamps can light up on the bottom. So many people get lamps from relatives, etc., or at yard sales and don't even think about that. And sometimes the light hook is missing so they didn't know. The American Girl Trunk.....my mouth is hanging open. Wow. The thing is, that, there is just so much STUFF in this country and even people like me who have been wheeling and dealing since 1978.....I can't keep up with all the sheer abundance of STUFF. There is just too much to learn everything about. Books are my thing and golf clubs are someone else's thing, or dolls, or electronics or coins or like you, you pick everything. So there is really no lack of stuff or people to sell things. There is enough for everyone. I am relaxed when I pick too. I had to go without a vehicle for over a month here lately and I didn't think that much about missing book sourcing because I was mainly concerned about passing out in the Alabama heat from walking everywhere when I'm disabled and not supposed to be walking that much. And I didn't think I would ever be able to have another vehicle. Well....I got another vehicle. Hallelujah. A one-owner Hyundai Sante Fe with only 75,000 miles on it and it drives like a dream. Well, yesterday I went to a thrift store and they had these big plastic boxes that you could fill up with books for only $6. I got 39 books. I wasn't counting them or I would've added one extra to make it an even 40, but still.....basically 15¢ a book and there were some really good ones. I was in Heaven sourcing those books after not being able to go anywhere for over a month. Happy, happy, joy, joy! 22:40 420 Love it! Reminds me I need to go put some content in my Hippie Home page on Facebook. LOL I usually weigh my boxes before pricing shipping, but I wish they would let me price the shipping as what I know it's going to ship for. And sometimes book lots take more than $25 shipping. I try to sell Westerns, preferably large print Westerns and if I sell a BIG lot, it's going to take over $25 to ship. I just try to raise the price of the lot to make up for the additional shipping. Cool magic trick! Awesome video!
Disney World? If you are planning to go, do it in the fall. Late October through the end of the year, the weather is great. Going in the Summer.....you will probably melt. I live 45 minutes from WDW. We are currently into the stay inside with air conditioning mode until October. Heat, humidity, rain, thunderstorms and an occasional hurricane are the norm. October through May, it is paridise.
Hey Mike, I’ve been reselling for about 2 years part time and I do calculated shipping. Living in California there is always an unknown. It seems that the majority of the sales I have come from the East Coast and TX. I have had buyers complain about the shipping and I try and figure a different way to package and ship to lower the cost. Some buyers have also been rude about it. I remind them that I don’t own the planes and trucks that do the shipping.
I like close up magic as well. My dad was in to magic and I got to take him to the magic castle before he passed. This week I just received his old magic truck. I haven’t opened it yet. Maybe on Father’s Day.
You're going to Disney World but also checking out the housing market?.. I mostly do a flat rate shipping BUT on something really heavy or big I might do calculated because the difference in price will be so drastic .... So then I just figure someone close to me will buy it
I'm going to Disney for fun and will be in NC in AUG to see my kids and to see some more houses. We might keep our house in Ca. and also see if we want a NC home for splitting time between coasts.
One thing that does bother me slightly related to shipping, when someone tries to instruct me how to package/ship their item after they buy something. I do try to comply unless it is a ridiculous request.
I have sent instructions. Especially to newer sellers. I have had too many pieces of electronic equipment damaged because of poor packing. Then I've had to make a claim, send it back, and get a refund. All because of inadequate packing.
Hey mike good vid. I have been selling mostly old car parts for years my problem is shipping. I live in pa and shipping to cal the cost is outrageous just lost a nice sale do to shipping cost. Any tips. After watching your vid I can’t wait to put more items on
I have inherited a HUGE album collection..Do you pay the money for the album boxes to make sure they ship safely? I was cking the prices and like everything else these days..JUST CRAZY!! thx as always for all your info!
Always enjoy your vids, Mike. I've always done calculated shipping and had the discount come to me. However, lately I've been experimenting with a flat rate for the buyer. I'm starting to get how much things will cost and ballpark it in my favor. Win some loose some, make a few $ on the shipping for a few things, lose a few cents on one. Still come out ahead and I think it makes mecl look a little more competitive.
Yes, that is how I do it. I'm very good at my shipping costs and I'm not afraid for putting my own cost on an item. I make more money on shipping through out the year doing it this way.
Another great one! My bf is an avid fisherman, and I am an avid Picker...So after a day of picking, he always asks me "good fishin' today? Get a big one?" Sometimes I catch the prize, some days just some sun fish, but I enjoy every minute of it and keep plugging along! 🐠
Nice I like that analogy. Thanks again

It's so true. You can't really teach it you just learn the nuances of shipping. Once you get it it becomes easy.
Absolutely right, Mike. We can all shop around other pickers and still do well. How?, by being more curious, more knowledgeable, and being more willing to sell beyond the narrow confines of niches.

PERFECTLY said. That's how it is done. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you Mike for the reminder… I have a skeleton head telephone that I need to get listed. Totally forgot about it. Great video as always.
Hi Mike.. Good on u .. Thanks for the inspiration ! Good habits have a great week!
Thanks!
Calculated shipping for me. Thanks Mike
My experience is people love/buy Halloween items year round.
Halloween and Christmas, but especially Halloween!
Glad to see someone doing well. I need to watch your books videos , i find them at our local auction cheap ...
Books are super solid.

The key is early. After 3:30 no more new stock left. So, most of the good stuff is gone. Need to be there watching the carts etc.

I do calculated..and MOST of the time....I still make a few $s on it as well.

Thanks again. I will look into the Pirate Ship for MEDIA mail if I have to use them occasionally.
Great advice!

Yea, like I don't know how to ship it. LOL. I hate those too. Just trust me. LOL.
It was probably Raiken Profit! LoL I know he sends messages like that 😅

@@scottjohnson921 Then send the instructions before you buy it because the seller might tell you to keep your money.
I make up a fixed price, high enough to cover my costs.
That's me and I end up making money.
It's 420. Do you know where your tape gun is at? lol
I know! It's here somewhere.
Is shot it an app? Great pick ups btw! 😂420😂

I have inherited a HUGE album collection..Do you pay the money for the album boxes to make sure they ship safely? I was cking the prices and like everything else these days..JUST CRAZY!! thx as always for all your info!
Yes, I buy them in cases of 100. Just make sure you charge $5.95 for a single album and you should cover cost and the media mail shipping.
If Costco is for members only, why would they be worried about theft? I would think their shrinkage would be very minimal.
They do get to check you at the door. I always wondered why the big cardboard blister packs?
