    I love books so it's great to see some that have real value. Sadly, the eBay market is so dominated (here in the UK) by a couple of 'mega-sellers' that most books wouldn't even cover the cost of shipping.
    It pains me to see books going into recycling but I can't even donate them as my local charity shops (ie thrift stores) have said they won't accept any more since they can't shift them, even at their long-running 'special' rate of 5 for £1. The managers tell me most books end up going for pulping so it's not worth the time and space to process them for a couple of pounds per ton.

    Minute 27 the US Navy BB-55 cap. Interesting find, since that battleship was finished just in time for WW II, with her 16 inch guns. If you ever have a chance to see such a ship fire off all those main guns at once, it’s really something. The ship actually moves sideways when they fire a 9 barrel broadside. I’ve see it from just astern, when they brought back the Iowa class ships and re-fitted them for their Middle East duty.

    • @CommonwealthPicker
      @CommonwealthPicker  3 года назад

      excellent. Thanks for the history.

    • @bhenry4405
      @bhenry4405 3 года назад

      @@CommonwealthPicker In practical terms a 16” Battleship naval gun can send a 2700 pound projectile, about the weight of your SUV, inland over 20 miles. Each turret has 3 barrels and battleships usually have 3 turrets. So a full broadside is like shot putting 9 cars at once. Long before cruise missiles an 80 to 100 year old Battleship could still really reach out and touch someone.

    • @bhenry4405
      @bhenry4405 3 года назад +1

      Naval history is an interesting subset of general history and the history of Naval Battleships is one of the more interesting chapters. The general design hadn't changed all that much from the late 1800s, up until the last group (the 4 Iowa class) were built. Like modern cars or planes, the designers kept trying to load them with bigger guns, more armor plate, all the bells and whistles and still make them go faster, but that was always the challenge. More weight, meant less speed.
      Even before the last 2 of the 6 of the class was built, the world had changed and the last 2 were barely started, when they were scrapped. The aircraft carrier had become the big shark in the pond, and many felt it made the battleship obsolete because the planes from a carrier could power project further then the 23 mile distance a shell could be sent inland from a battleship.
      It's odd to think that the size of a ship's guns are often limited by mutual treaty agreement and by the time the Iowa class was built, they were only supposed to only receive 14" guns, by the treaty agreement, but ended up with the 16" size we've seen them outfitted with. Some of the older battleships, all of which were gone by the 1950s and 60s even had 18" guns.
      The other constraint many aren't aware of is that Battleships had to be kept "of a size" that could navigate the 2 key canal choke-points in the world, the Suez and Panama Canals. If they were built too large, allowing for larger guns, they couldn't take the "short cuts" to the world hot spots.
      I saw 3 of the 4 (Mosuouri, Iowa, New Jersey) in my time in the Navy, when they were brought back to help make up a 600 ship fleet and used for the Gulf War. It turns out they weren't so obsolete afterall, especially when Cruise Missiles were added to their armament. Now their museums, at least until they might be needed again.
      Enjoyed the video, especially since it triggered some memories. You don't just sell memories, you remind us of them.

    People forget “ it’s a Garage sale” their purpose is to sell and get rid of their stuff. At a garage sale ( I have had a few) it doesn’t matter what they bought it for or what they are selling for on eBay. People go to garage sales to get a deal, not pay selling price. $100 for the Louis L’ Amour was not “being cheap”. that was more than what I would offer. 50 cents to $1.00 a piece is the usual garage sale price for books and a bundle like that should be better. Nobody will pay his asking price. I love Louis L’Amour and I would laugh inside at his asking price. If they have sentimental feelings for what they are selling, then maybe they shouldn’t sell it.

    He called you cheap, because you are cheap, you are just like my Uncle. You should have paid at least $250 for $1000 in like new condition books.
    Here is what is cheap, I used to do storage lockers with my Uncle, and he wanted to re-use the smelly, sticky, nasty, black hefty trash bags that had stuff in them in a storage locker. I said hell no, I will buy him a box of hefty trash bags, I am not using those bags over, no way.
    And my Uncle is a fairly wealthy man, he just does storage lockers for something to do while he is retired. He owns his house, and both his cars, and he has a lot of money in the bank, most likely over $200k. He retired from Management at CAT. The other day he bought a property, with cash, for $18k, fixed it up a little, and sold it 2 months later for $32k, and made roughly a $13k profit in 8 weeks.
    And he wants to re-use old trash bags he found in a storage locker, now that is cheap.

      Man I would love to agree with you because I’ve seen resellers targeting people that are desperate. That guy ain’t desperate he sold a Bible for $10. To me there’s something weird about that I would give somebody a Bible. Anyway my mom Downsized and now I have her book collection in my basement is like 1000 books. They’re a major pain in the ass and if I was Standing in my basement with him I would say how much do you want me to pay you to take these out of my house? What is that guy gonna do with Them? He didn’t pay nothing for them and he’s probably thinking all the time and what his books on my house. You know That you could buy books by the Pound right by the pound. This reseller guy right here did a lot of work if he sold those books Then he pulled off a miracle these days because everybody download. It’s not like he was buying first edition Huck Finn or To kill a mockingbird. A dollar a book On average what do you think you’d be able to sell them for individually man. Cocaines worth a lot of money but if I had a kilo of cocaine I don’t know what to do with it it’s not worthless that’s a bad example but I’m just saying

    My lottery fantasy is to show up at garage sales and ask them how much do you want for everything. And when I say everything I mean everything in sight, things they did not bring out from the garage... Even if I have to pay $4,000. I would just love to see their garage bare Bones. And then just haul everything to an auction. That's the lottery fantasy for you. I like to do the same thing at a flea market. Just leave the seller scratching his head.

      While I would normally agree, although I was in a somewhat similar situation, I had posted my old guitar on offerup, and a guy wanted to buy it for 30 bucks. I drove the 15 min to wait and meet with him, for him to just say oh its in bad shape yadayadayada, and said I'll take it for 10 bucks. I said no thanks I'll just throw it out. Went home and threw it in the dumpster. Yea I missed out on 10 bucks, but I was so mad he perused me to waste my time to go out there, the satisfaction of him not getting the guitar was worth the 10 buck loss to me. I was angry.
