You're actually super on-point with that comparison; oppressive atmosphere, crushing difficulty, steep learning curve and huge amounts of nightmare-fuel.
Ironically enough master difficulty is the easiest, on lower difficulties your bullets have a randomly generated chance to just disappear, and on master it makes a 1:1 damage ratio meaning you inflict the exact same amount of damage you take.
GiRayne The game was never meant to have lower difficulties, it was initially only going to have one difficulty (which is currently master difficulty), but the company was pressured into adding lower difficulties because people thought it was too hard so they just made a ton of bullet sponge bullshit. Also, git gud, stalker is supposed to be a hard game.
GiRayne What bullet sponge ? One headshot from a sniper rifle kills almost anything except chimeras and giants. Two headshots will kill a bloodsucker (although good luck pulling that off).
karry299 It's true, when you finally get the SVD or the VSS the game turns into "pop pop pop, watching motherfuckers drop..." Unless you're attacked by a dog pack in which case you run away crying, nothing in the zone is scarier than a dog pack.
GiRayne my only complaint is the apparent uselessness of handguns; their effective range is ridiculously short. it seems like once something is more than a couple meters away from you, a handgun just does fuck all.
shorebreak69 yeah I mean the start was more realistic I felt, I had to run from larger threats, scrounge up gear for money and fixing my own gear, but at the end I was chasing down fleeing super mutants with a super sledge hammer in my bulky power armour, I know that's part of the charm, but I feel the threat diminishes too much at later levels, I hope there's a really refined hard-core mode for FO4 cause sign me up
aperturesciencegames well for the record I'm using world of pain, project nevada and the (excellent) bounty hunter series including Russel- the hardest mod in the fallout universe with the largest and most horrifically difficult dungeon ever made.
You know.. That whole bit with the genocide of people in slightly different colored anoraks for their baked beans is reminiscent of Dayz just a little bit.
It's kinda where dayz got the idea from in the first place. The best part of the series is call of pripyat anyhow as it fixed the vast majority of the bugs and had an overall more consistent world.
The STALKER series my favourite series of videogames. Get some huge (talking liek 14gigs) mod packs and the game is decently stable, immersive and it's difficulty is just awesome after you adjusted an hour or so.
STALKER is my favorite too. After playing and finishing the first 2 games 2 or 3 times and CoP 4 times, I started playing the misery mod. My head just exploded from how awesome it is ( and because a controller in a bush decided that the guy with a broken coat looked like a tasty snack ) i wished that I could experience more STALKER content.
Slark Xeraser The mods give the game the polish that an ukrainian indy studio didnt have the resources for. But no amount of mods will make witcher 2 something else than a chore to play, shame though becouse i kinda like its (more customer friendly than most ) developers.
was I the only one who glanced away from the screen and panicked when he kept repeating "worst part" but then realized it was actually part of the video ....no? just me? .w.
Taylor Edgell No it's not. The name "stalker" is what people that illegally enter and leave the Zone are called. The name goes as far back as Roadside Picnic, the book that inspired the game to a ridiculous degree. The acronym "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." is just something the PR people at GSC Gameworld came up with to differentiate it slightly from the source material. The whole "Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, and Robber" thing is just their way of justifying it.
The "missions completing themselves" problem was the exact opposite in Shadow of Chernobyl. You'd enter an area or come near a location and hear someone on the radio requesting immediate help, and no matter what you do, you can't get there in time. One example that really stands out is when there was an outpost that you need to go through to get to the next area and they requested help with some mutants, but they just scolded you when you got there because you didn't get there in time.
Here's the problem: He played on medium difficulty. For some reason in S.T.A.L.K.E.R games the difficulty is a bit reversed, if he played on the hardest difficulty he would have enjoyed it more.
Basically, when on "lower" difficulties, the game is pointlessly harder. Enemies do more damage than you do to them, they act like sponges and are dumb as shit which makes the game more annoying to play. On "Master" difficulty it doesn't work like that, but rather enemies are non-retarded, making the game more fun, as well as damage not being retarded. I don't know whether the complete mod changes this though, you'll have to check for yourself.
The whole reason for this, is difficulties changed overall bullet damage, instead of the actual character's damage, and with enemies getting access to better stuff more frequently and earlier than you, it makes for a lot of BS.
Darth Panzer You guys should try sgm 2.2, a mod for call of pripyat and probably one of the hardest but you can disable some of the features that make it hard
I know this comment is 2-3 years after the release of this video, but you know when you said about killing one of the guys then hiding behind a rock and then quicksaving, well after you kill few of them the whole team surrenders and the guy in the truck guides you to a trap...it wasn't a glitch...probably too late to tell you that because you already know that.
Little warning about the difficulty is that it effects enemies and you the same way, so on lower settings all guns are pea shooters and on higher everyone is equiped with BFG 9000s
I keep getting this weird error at 4:17 where the video freezes and the audio breaks, and then an error message said that angry police are coming, but the angry police never came. I missed the part that gave whistling for the baboon some context. Ugh, I hate this, it must be the Australian internet playing up again.
Yeah but it has to be a fine balance between a mechanic that adds realism for the sake of immersion and realism which only serves to frustrate the gamer himself. Look at Metal Gear Solid, half the fun is the fact that you can tell the mindstate of a soldier by an exclamation point or question mark above his head or the fact that you can distract an enemy by something so simple as tapping a wall, despite the fact that the only thing id actually do in real life is probably activate an alarm. There has to be a fine balance between realism and fun gameplay, because the two don't always co-exist peacefully.
Republikaner Gardist Right except consider who the Stalkers are, they're a bunch of rag-tag criminals who snuck into Chernobyl to get rich or die trying. I doubt that they could afford the newest and shiniest weapons, even if they could they can't exactly get any more when they're on the other side and after frequent use and exposure to the anomalies it's no surprise that the weapons are worn.
Its not the fact that they jam i don't think, i like that mechanic quite a bit. But without a better way of saying it, he says it happens at terribly inconvenient times, and it does seem like you're more likely to jam in a firefight then when you're just firing randomly.
Actually, I found Clear Sky the most enjoyable of the series (and I've played through the other two multiples times). With the latest patch for it I didn't experience any crashes or bugs.
I think it's hilarious that he likes Clear Sky which if you ask any STALKER vet what they think of it they'll ask you what Clear Sky is because it's so horrible compared to the other two they block it out like a traumatic memory.
I think the bug where alerted enemies become passive after loading was an attempt to fix a bug in the first game where passive enemies become alerted after loading. Either that or its a weird contradictory coincidence.

+Jordan 'Dingus'Jones LJN got away with it because it was part of their business strategy to sell shit ass games. They market to the highly coveted demographic of "people with the mental age of 7 year olds", and that includes actual children/toddlers and retards alike.
+CyberGenesis I know a lot of people like CoP, but to me it just feels like a failed attempt to finally pull off that open-world Chernobyl sandbox they originally wanted to make. The first map is great, but you can easily tell they ran out of time after that one: The second map looks like a giant meadow onto which someone randomly sprinkled points of interest, without any sense of realism or coherence, and the final Pripyat level consists mostly of copy-pasted streets and buildings. I would have preferred they had stuck to one map and used the rest of the time to fill it with more actual content.
Chillermushroom I feel bad for that team, CoP almost wasnt made given their budget issues and it's an IP i'd really love to see made into the Defiance-esque MMO. It was a good game, it just felt like a shiny version of SoC. CS had a good story that was marred terribly by bad graphics and buggy code. CoP i still play on occasion, the post-game Open World is fun to just explore. I just wish there had been expansions to add more content to the "Faffing about" aspect
CyberGenesis Considering how Publishers do shooter MMOs these days (The Division *cough*), it's probably better we not see our beloved franchise humiliated in such a way. As for CoP, every now and then I get the urge to replay it for a while, only to be reminded how much more interesting SoC and CS are, because they have structure. It's telling that the only parts of CoP that have stuck with me over the years (I only played through it all twice) are the parts that are more tightly designed, such as the gas-filled tunnels with the underground train station.
Chillermushroom CS felt too Rails-y to me, there was no real freedom. I happen to play Division, I'm not really upset about it. It's what I expected it to be, but I always had realistic expectations. Nearly every complaint i see about it is either Console players expecting PC graphics, or gameplay expectations of realism in a game that gives you health on crits -.- It's a non-cell shaded Borderlands plain and simple. The hypocritical expectations are the consumer's fault, not the developers Shitty marketing and improper settings of expectations (which there is some guilt of) is the Publisher's fault
You must understand, Yahtzee, that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series was built by drunk Ukrainians, and the first installment (Shadow of Chernobyl) would've been groundbreaking for its time ('07 abouts), had it not been built by drunk Ukrainians with no clear platform (PS2/XBox/PC) in mind... I personally find the grittiness (read: bugginess) actually adds to the mystery that is the exclusion zone, and I have always always ALWAYS loved the slightly primitive art style; looking through current-day pictures of the no-go zone around Chernobyl will quickly put you back into the game, hunting the Military at Cordon for an AK-74u and a magazine's worth of bullets just to watch them gear up and raid the STALKER village killing all your friends and quest givers.... The whole "quick-save, then reload and totally different environment" bit kind of adds to the whole "doesn't play the same way twice" aspect, even if you can bug the game out to your advantage... Though, I'd have loved to have seen this particular bug! Every time I re-re-re-re-reload a save spot, I usually find myself riddled with bullets before I can say "okay, what was I doing when I saved, again?" S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was one of the first few games to actually try to get real-world ballistics dialed into their engine.... Thus, you were exceedingly unsuccessful in putting four Makarov (P.m.m) bullets into your armored target before they peppered you full of holes with their AK's... ProTip: Bind med packs to your TAB key, and bandages to your tilde key; you'll need to keep them close in a firefight... If you want, Yahtzee, I can teach you how to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. successfully through all three games... I cheeky breeky'd quite a bit back in the day... There are many hidden gems you'll find that will help give you the advantage early on...
Funny thing about the higher difficulties in Stalker, they don't make the enemies tankier, they make both you and the enemies significantly less tanky.
1:13 that's the main reason why I ditched the game after less than one hour in. Enemies kept sniping me with shotguns and simply decided to ignore anything I do unless I'm rubbing my face up their ass... So if that's fixed, maybe I might retry the game...
alexK661 Did you mean to reply to me? Because the message is that I hsould use all weapons even though that message would be better directed at the original poster.
I've caught up to every ZP video out there, and this one is still the funniest! Lines such as: "embarrassingly badly", "weirdly compelling", "crackwhore with the sniffles", and everything before "whistled for a baboon" are the keystones of this review. Shit... I wish I had found this series LONG ago.
Having played since the original release, I had no problems whatsoever with engagements with enemies. I thought how refreshing it was from all the other bullshit mechanics in every other game. (ie: absolute stupid accuracy). The firefight mechanics are closer to perfect than any other game I have ever played; since 1985. Headshots take an enemy down in one. Upgrading your weapon for your playstyle enables you to get better at your style, (and makes it stupidly easier). If players think it is too hard, they need to leave the PC alone and go back to their cuddly kiddy consoles; Call Of hand-holding Duty. 'Stalker: Lost Alpha' is a very good version of STALKER. Exclusively made in honour of GSC. It features a number of resurrected zones, items and ideas that GSC originally dropped in the design process. 9/10
With the console gaming community maybe, good. Let it die. Anything that is on console is a console game by default. the lowest capabilities take presidence over the design. = CoD is a console game. I think you lack some critical knowledge about gaming platforms. you seem very young and naiive. Probably a console player.
Ah, the lovely console wars are surfacing again. Honey, please remember that not everyone enjoys playing a game by dropping trou and spreading cheeks. Also, keep in mind that this game isn't hard, it's unfair.
I would say more like, problematic. Those who expect a game to work as soon as it's 'shoved in' won't like it and find it unfair. Those who understand that Clear Sky is the most buggy of them all will know never to bother to play it again and can find a lot of it in 'Lost Alpha' any way, assuming you know how to install it and its patch. It's not a game for kids, thankfully. The thing I like about it is its scientific values. Unlike other BS games, STALKER has managed to maintain a great theme throughout and a key character also with twists in the storyline. Not something you see stay intact with multiple devs hashing the crap out of games till they resemble a pile of matter excreted from the rear of a cow. (ahemNewThiefahem).
Dudu Nikolaishvili yes it was, but the principle is the same, very difficult in many areas, hard to get used too, but in the end, is very well made and ultimately fun...
Ackshually, playing on hardest difficulty is recommended for STALKER games. The whole point about armoured enemies taking too many bullets is because the series treats difficulty with a SJW egalitarian view, that is you die in fewer shots, but so do your enemies. Your enemies will shoot more accurately, but then so too will you. It still makes for a tough game, but it's not as awkwardly balanced when you can blast your shotgun pretty accurately and nail some poor chum in the head at 100 meters.
Of all of his episodes this one made laugh the most by far. May not the hardest but defenetly the most, since I had to stop every 5 seconds to catch some breath before continuing, only to repeat that process after the next 5 seconds.
I love this. This video was made by someone who hasn't been infected with the aids that is this generation of games so nice hearing stalker haze half life halo
There is no difficulty curve to this S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, or any of the others. You just get fucked enough times that eventually YOU get to do the fucking. The only part of the game that's truly unfair and just pointless and annoying is the machine gun nest at the beginning of the game.
+Ian Zulick Honestly the lack of curve was comforting. Here's a world that hates you, here's some shitty gun - go nuts, don't die. It's a game that takes the amatuer insult of "Get good" and goes pro with it.
The X-ray engine is a total mystery, especially to the Ukrainians who developed it. More to the point, Clear Sky has this *hilarious* habit of sending you in entirely the wrong direction after you wake up. When you start any of the games (except Chernobyl, you can only FUCK THAT UP if you go to the electric anomaly ghost when your scouting out the helicopters early on) you need to NOT go the way the game tells you to after the first mission almost 9/10 times this is safer than whatever the PDA says that you should do. Maybe its a bug, maybe it was just a prank bro, but all of the games are endearing for different, yet slightly goofy- masochistic reasons.
Pile of ass that glitched/CTD'd more times than I can remember and burnt that one metal-groaning sound into my brain. Still utterly love it and the other two. Glad Metro appears to be keeping the spirit somewhat alive.

This was my first fully rendered 3D FPS, it was only the 3D tech that kept me going through this game, I remember standing in doorways or under shelters when it rained and being impressed, the end of the game frustrated the hell out of me, I almost didn't finish it, but somehow I spammed my way to completing it, don't ask me how, I was just glad it was over.

It's kinda where dayz got the idea from in the first place.
The best part of the series is call of pripyat anyhow as it fixed the vast majority of the bugs and had an overall more consistent world.
I never actually played unmodded STALKER... I always run misery for pripyat or the equivalent on Clear Sky...
Marcus sucram Even if Stalker is dead, it will always be held alive and remembered by the still really big fanbase.
Xeraser I enjoy it even without mods. But these mods add A lot! I played 2 times through the game without mods.
Slark Xeraser
The mods give the game the polish that an ukrainian indy studio didnt have the resources for. But no amount of mods will make witcher 2 something else than a chore to play, shame though becouse i kinda like its (more customer friendly than most ) developers.
Slark Xeraser No one makes so many mods for shitty games mate...
People obviously LOVE it if they want to go out and mod it.
was I the only one who glanced away from the screen and panicked when he kept repeating "worst part" but then realized it was actually part of the video

Crimson Phoenix A guy in a fur suit.
Ever heard about furries? No? Lucky you!
Pause the video and look in the background of the photo. There are random people just standing around.

That's because the people who give furries a bad name, jumped on the brony train. Good riddance BTW.

No it's not.
You wouldn't say that if Mizore was stalking you.
@@cailumgrantham-tibbitt8543 don't just stand there come in
The "missions completing themselves" problem was the exact opposite in Shadow of Chernobyl.
3:44 that wasn't a bug or magic, you just reloaded to the end of the fight, that's what happens when strelok gets away, the stalkers get neutral
"Reload, Dr. Freeman"
Get out of here stalker!
you can actually find freeman in the game not alive mind you
Here's the problem: He played on medium difficulty. For some reason in S.T.A.L.K.E.R games the difficulty is a bit reversed, if he played on the hardest difficulty he would have enjoyed it more.
I'm about to play Stalker clear sky with complete mod, want to explain what you meant? i want the better experience.
I don't know whether the complete mod changes this though, you'll have to check for yourself.
ok, thanks for the tip!
P
The whole reason for this, is difficulties changed overall bullet damage, instead of the actual character's damage, and with enemies getting access to better stuff more frequently and earlier than you, it makes for a lot of BS.
This game is the worst of the three STALKERS.
then why I can't stop playing it!!
John Oliver
You speaking from expierence, John?
+Auzep Even the redheaded stepchild of the franchise is still a pretty damn good game, that's why.
That means even if it's tge worst in the series, it still stands above the usual triple a output
Try the Oblivion Lost mod (any version) for ShoC. Play it on Master, naturally.
I guess you like hardcore games
I like STALKER it's a nice series and seeing Yatzee like it makes me proud of myself
Bug problem is solved by teh mods
Yus i'm currently using it!
Nah but i will right now lol, thx 4 the tip!
Darth Panzer
You guys should try sgm 2.2, a mod for call of pripyat and probably one of the hardest but you can disable some of the features that make it hard
dantemajd Will do bro!
dantemajd Misery is overrated. Rather than challenging is artificially difficulty. Guns are nerfed down and a mixbag of new and vanilla models.

I keep getting this weird error at 4:17 where the video freezes and the audio breaks, and then an error message said that angry police are coming, but the angry police never came. I missed the part that gave whistling for the baboon some context.
Ugh, I hate this, it must be the Australian internet playing up again.
I like the jam mechanic what else you expect from shitty guns in an apocalypse
Yeah but it has to be a fine balance between a mechanic that adds realism for the sake of immersion and realism which only serves to frustrate the gamer himself. Look at Metal Gear Solid, half the fun is the fact that you can tell the mindstate of a soldier by an exclamation point or question mark above his head or the fact that you can distract an enemy by something so simple as tapping a wall, despite the fact that the only thing id actually do in real life is probably activate an alarm. There has to be a fine balance between realism and fun gameplay, because the two don't always co-exist peacefully.
This takes place in Chernobyl, so the rest of the world outside is fine. So you'd think the guns would be decent?
Anthony Vitera Well that's just called Murphy's law.
I love the error message XD

Actually, I found Clear Sky the most enjoyable of the series (and I've played through the other two multiples times). With the latest patch for it I didn't experience any crashes or bugs.
I think it's hilarious that he likes Clear Sky which if you ask any STALKER vet what they think of it they'll ask you what Clear Sky is because it's so horrible compared to the other two they block it out like a traumatic memory.
holy shit, i had no idea this video was made in 2011 until i saw a comment said "im 2-3 years late" and saw it was 6 years ago
I think the bug where alerted enemies become passive after loading was an attempt to fix a bug in the first game where passive enemies become alerted after loading. Either that or its a weird contradictory coincidence.

Jordan 'Dingus'Jones No Mercy on the n64. I returned that piece of shit 3 times.
TheVergilus Are you doing the Austin thing or wondering why I kept returning it.
TheVergilus "Launch copies of No Mercy suffered from a bug which erased saved content, including created wrestlers, championship story modes, and game saves.[1] The bug was corrected in later production runs."
+Jordan 'Dingus'Jones LJN got away with it because it was part of their business strategy to sell shit ass games. They market to the highly coveted demographic of "people with the mental age of 7 year olds", and that includes actual children/toddlers and retards alike.
Rest easy, Volodymyr Ezhov...
Actually, there is no option to lie down. Only duck and crouch.
Clear Sky is the wrinkley prune in a batch of plump grapes.
+Rusty Shackleforde Seriously, SoC was great, Clear Sky was buggy as shit, and CoP is still awesome and I frequently go back to it to faff around
CyberGenesis
Considering how Publishers do shooter MMOs these days (The Division *cough*), it's probably better we not see our beloved franchise humiliated in such a way.
The hypocritical expectations are the consumer's fault, not the developers
Shitty marketing and improper settings of expectations (which there is some guilt of) is the Publisher's fault
The error message at the end is hilarious

"You're boned!"

anytime a video does a "crashing" bit, I always flinch and think "OH GOD PLEASE NO".
Every time I re-re-re-re-reload a save spot, I usually find myself riddled with bullets before I can say "okay, what was I doing when I saved, again?"
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was one of the first few games to actually try to get real-world ballistics dialed into their engine....
Weirdly tried these games recently... found it funny the harder difficulty you play on the easier it is to kill things, so... i think he was right!
STALKER: Clear Sky is not the best game of the trilogy. I REALLY recommend you revisit the series.
Funny thing about the higher difficulties in Stalker, they don't make the enemies tankier, they make both you and the enemies significantly less tanky.
Stalker plays better on Master difficulty
Why am I only just seeing this now? Awesome video :)
Anyone else instinctively reach for ctrl+alt+del when the video did the skipping thing?
The "That's him! Take him down!" part of the video still makes me laugh every time. XD

No, I meant the original poster. Don't know how I messed up such a simple move
Download the COMPLETE 2009 mod, it fixes some of the unfairly hard difficulty.

Difficulty isn't PC exclusive. Call of Duty is on PC too. Fuck, you're the problem with the gaming community.
With the console gaming community maybe, good. Let it die.
Anything that is on console is a console game by default. the lowest capabilities take presidence over the design. = CoD is a console game. I think you lack some critical knowledge about gaming platforms. you seem very young and naiive. Probably a console player.
It's always cute watching kids argue about who's having more fun playing their video games.
The reclamation project mods are a must if you are going to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for your own enjoyment and not record it for views.
Essentially, the Dark souls of FPS
ain't stalker made before dark souls
Dudu Nikolaishvili
yes it was, but the principle is the same, very difficult in many areas, hard to get used too, but in the end, is very well made and ultimately fun...
You nailed that description.
Been saying this...since DS became a meme of unforgiving hardness within gaming.
No, Dark souls is the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. of third-person medieval-them-ups.
This might very well be my favorite episode.
To be honest Clear Sky is terrible compared to the other S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games
the harder versions of stalker make it a whole hell of a lot easier, believe it or not
I love this. This video was made by someone who hasn't been infected with the aids that is this generation of games so nice hearing stalker haze half life halo
Best game review EVARRRRR!
There is no difficulty curve to this S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, or any of the others. You just get fucked enough times that eventually YOU get to do the fucking. The only part of the game that's truly unfair and just pointless and annoying is the machine gun nest at the beginning of the game.
+Ian Zulick I always go in & out of that tunnel,, then go around the long way past the machine yard. :)
+Ian Zulick Honestly the lack of curve was comforting. Here's a world that hates you, here's some shitty gun - go nuts, don't die. It's a game that takes the amatuer insult of "Get good" and goes pro with it.
It's dark souls with guns.

I'm on a ZP rerun
This was my first fully rendered 3D FPS, it was only the 3D tech that kept me going through this game, I remember standing in doorways or under shelters when it rained and being impressed, the end of the game frustrated the hell out of me, I almost didn't finish it, but somehow I spammed my way to completing it, don't ask me how, I was just glad it was over.
That's one of the reasons I loved it: The game doesn't hold your hand. It lets you experiment and figure things out on your own.
Thanks, I couldn't stop laughing after about a minute in :)
It's the zero punctuation theme by Ian Dorsch, you can download it from the Escapist's website.
"I played on medium difficulty"
Well, that was your first mistake. Stalker must be played on Master difficulty unless you want your enemies to be bullet sponges.
". . .Give you a water pistol and replace all the enemies with fire-breathing golden lions."? Sounds like a few of the many frustrating sections found in Vivisector.
