This fucking guy !
Legendary once in a lifetime talent .
It’s not just his speed and chops; he has a superb artistry as well amazing
This was a challenging time for him. Bebop had been around for about a decade, and drummers were moving around the kit melodically, without fanfare and flash. While he lambasted bop in a 1956 Downbeat interview, a few years later, in the words of Stan Levy and Mike Mainieri, he let the new music into his system, and became better than ever.
Buddy was a great band drummer, he lifted up any band. BTW; unlike many other drummers he keeps the form when plays his solos. Musicians will know what I mean.
Yes 👏
A Buddy clip I haven't actually seen before. Cool.
God Buddy's swing is like a train comin' down the tracks deliverin' the good news!:)
Mel Torme said, "Buddy, I know I'm not your favorite drummer, and your not my favorite singer". LOL! The drumming on here is classic Buddy. Those moves, his style, the feel he got moving around the set....I'm afraid we will never see drumming like this again. Thanks for the post, I really miss him.
check out greyson nekrutman;)
@@foofich I was literally about to comment this
Buddy will always be my favorite no. one drummer of all time. If he lived today he would still kick all other drummers of the chair with he's groove
The greatest drummer to grace Australian shores....any shores in fact !
Man this one is way more better than those 'West side story' solos
some beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL hi-hat work here. and they're fastened nice and loose, but still secure. for some reason, a lot of drummers don't understand the importance, and benefits, of this.
that left hand is deadly
All the years looking at Buddy Rich growing up in the 60s right to 80s I never knew Buddy Rich could sing I knew he could tape dance can't beat these old time performers
By far, this is The Best footage I have ever seen showcasing the technique of Mr. Rich...
The camera angles and timing of the shots literally provide a Clinic of his Absolute Mastery..
Brett Rosenberg Thank You SO MUCH.
Right? For once the camera was where it should be!
60's buddy ruch was absolutely ruthless on the drums!!!
whoever got to play buddy's kit for the first song must be pretty happy
+MattyJ2112 if they even got to play his that is
+MattyJ2112 I don't think that was Buddys' kit. Just sayin.
Jack Stubbington Yeah most drummers when they did tv shows were not using their own kit; especially over seas. But on any kit the snare should be adjustable and even the seat so he probably just didn't bother. Hey if you can play you can play. I don't understand these drummers who freak out if they don't have their set up exactly how they want it. To me it suggests their not that good. Buddy could play on a toy drum set and be impressive.
I'd be pretty scared instead...
Actually, the house drummer, the late, great, Billy Hyde played on his own set off screen. Buddy said he rated Billy as a world class drummer and he was right.
Amazingly, Buddy got even better with age..unlike many others.
I would describe Buddy Rich as the "The fastest man that ever lived" - know what I mean ? ha ha.
When he wanted to abadon drumming in the 50's and become a song and dance man, he asked Torme to atttend his show, and asked him what he thought. Torme said, "I'm not your favorite drummer, and you're not my favorite singer"
David Gusick I
I take Buddy's singing over Mel Torment any time. The timing is better!
He wanted to abandon drumming? Why? Not enough money in it?
@@thardingau bop was the new jazz
He wanted to cross over like Nat Cole
@@thardingau correct
when i see his right foot start tapping, i just think that aint no ordinary singers foot!
best drummer ever ;) sings too :)
Buddy could already drumming in the beginning Mr. DRUMS Rich. 👏👏👏👏
how gr8 is this...a happy Buddy!!!!
gatt dayyummm that solo. i felt sorry for that snare lol
Just Fantastic, when Buddy gets behind those drums he’s like an unstoppable, force, great camera angle from the side too.
I've never seen him break a stick, very cool footage, he seemed much more humble in this, acknowledging the band
This swings even in 3/4 speed. Amazing
Buddy forever!
He do IT in black and White tv and SING very well 🎤🥁⭐🇺🇲
I had no idea he could sing!
+Derpmuffins The Great he couldnt. tried to quit drums in the 50's failed as song and dance man according to Torme
i had no idea he couldnt sing
A total musician
Lol That dive at the end
Superb Singing nice and Relaxed the GREATEST Most Dynamic Drummer that goes without saying but a lot of people do not know this BUDDY also was a tap dancer not your regular tap dancer but a great great tap dancer And in the world of drumming tap dancing and drumming go hand in hand. if you have some tap dancing back ground you can do much more on a set of drums. Buddy Rich the consummate musician could sing great DRUM like no other human and he could tap dance, He had it all going for him and then some.
Ashton Szymarek This comment from my great friend in drumming, the Boom, says it all!
True artist Mr Buddy Rich.
Hi Ray, this is Joachim Fuchs-Charrier, you remember my Buddy Rich Tribute? I think, this clip is phanomenal and shows the variety of this master!
Ray Szymarek I totally agree with you! I believe I've seen him tap dancing before , but I really didn't know that he could sing! Besides tap dancing...being very athletic is definitely a plus if not a must!!! Many drummers are very temperamental & athletic people.
What can you say about Buddy Rich that already hasn't been said? His technique was far superior to anyone I've ever seen! His speed was faster than anyone I've ever seen! And what he could do with that left hand was far superior to anyone I've ever seen! Basically he was an ambidextrous drummer. Not very common at all! If you notice when he's playing, he almost leads with his left hand instead of his right, which allowed him that extra ordinary speed that no other drummer really had. Buddy Rich will always be tops with me!!!
Buddy Rich is still my most favorite drummer ever.
Wow!!! I never knew that he could sing ! Pretty good! He is on ! Not like he had his own original voice , or singing style , or a wide vocal range...but he had a good vocalist voice & could sing !
Awesome - simply awesome.
Thanks very much for this. Buddy was a man of many talents. Love Buddy's beautiful singing on "All of You." A song not played enough.
He patterned his vocals on Frank Sinatra but was a distant third !
Unreal.
Not sure whether it was in Mel Torme book about Buddy (Traps - The Drum Wonder) or elsewhere, but Buddy's use of the bass drum was described as tap dancing on the pedal.
0:12 This is a juicy chord progression
Thanks for posting this!
That drum stick did blow up never seen Buddy break a stick. Lo0ve how he does play a kit that is not his and using a wood stool(I had too how about you The drum stool was the last thing I would buy after getting drums even using grandmas metal chair step stool from her kitchen) and nice he acknowledges the band great playing and how the bottom hi hat cymbal drops down when he sees buddy playing!
He had pretty good voice ...lessons from sinatra
"SMH" !!!!!!!!!
Thanks for posting. Brett
This was late 50s
Early 60s rejoined Jarry James after touring Far East w Mainieri Sam Most
Wow check his hi-hats from when he sits down to when he's done, he crunched it so many times and so hard the clutch loosened and he had like 2 inches of space added
The Tenor player could well be Alec Doherty as at this time he played with Keith and Jack had a regular gig at the Keyboard Club.
唖然として聴き入った。
Does anybody know more about this guitarist Jack Westmore? I think his playing here was great. I never heard of him before.
Buddy was backed that night by the house musicians including Billy Hyde on drums. Jack Westmore was a local legend in the Australian music industry. A jazz guitarist he was active from the 1950s to the 1970s.
@@Duckless23 Nice. Thank you so much.
FAB,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
nice singer,, but the king of drums forever xx
I wonder what drums they gave Buddy to use here.
This was during his Rogers endorsement period.
That's Graham Kennedy, the host!
Wow, not a great singer but a god among men! Still great to see
Great as usual, Since Buddy's using someone else's kit I was just curious what kind of kit that is.
He was not a bad singer, but I suppose you had to be exceptionally good to make a career of it.
is there anything this guy did not do well?
pinball1970 ; yeah, MANAGE MONEY!!!!
Getting along with his band members?
From the clip on his life story DVD set, he wasn't a great pianist. :)
バディーリッチが歌えるなんて知らなかった。
The stick took revenge and kicked his butt.
He's fine, better than most at singing, but I'm glad he kept his night job.
thanks for posting; I knew he was out here as a child performer and later in the 1980s but didn't know he was out here in the 60's; pretty weird set up, small band but most of the all the set up of the drums, not his complete kit and the drums were not the usual height and angle of his normal rig, but he plays and plays.....
Many of today’s top drummers could learn from playing on just a 4 piece kit.
Actually Buddy played a 5 piece kit... snare, kick, rack tom and 2 floor toms. Granted, his second floor tom was used as a catch all (towels, drinks, etc.) but occasionally he would use the second one too.
Edward Bercume
Very occasionally.
Have a look at the small wooden stool, Buddy was asked to use.
Much lower than the 24" throne he normally played on.
It would have been, both awkward and uncomfortable.
The tv producers obviously didn't give it much thought.
Still, Buddy blew them away with his playing, as always.
He was A SINGER TOO???
Buddy's attempt o cross over, the way Nat Cole did. Didnt pan out
this was not the early 60's it was in the mid 50s. he was in his late 30's and was affiliated with Ludwig. He switched to Rogers in the early 60s
Australia didn’t get TV until late 56. That’s my dad playing the piano.
who's the drummer?
The late great Billy Hyde.
Where is the drummer when he sings? Was it a black drummer? Wasn't this guy a mobster? Anyway he was a true genius. Greetings from a Finnish jazz musician.
dentist linguist drummer was likely Billy Hyde, great drummer from Melbourne (that’s where this was filmed).
Thanks a lot I will check him out immediately!
Buddy had to sit on a crappy little stool, instead of the 24” canister stool he normally played on.
Someone didn’t do their homework, when arranging things for him.
Personally, I don't think his singing, or perhaps "crooning" was that bad. Not great, but respectable. However, as a drummer, you only have to see something like this and some of the other RUclips videos to realise that for all the great drummers in the world, none have ever surpassed Rich and it seems reasonable to think that no-one ever will. Some have bits of his arsenal "down", but none that I have heard match Rich in every department.
Yes, many have matched his speed and some of his chops, but never his musicality - his musical creativity on the drums.
Broke stick at 6:45
tip not stick. Please . Understood though if you just started playing though :)
Dear friend. The tip don't belong to the drum stcik? What kind of debate you willing to do?
Augusto Castro-> Thought exactly the same :P
Apparently Buddy was no fan of Australia. Said the place was full of drunken big mouths.
What a crappy little stool they gave Buddy.
He usually uses a 24” canister throne.
Lock at the crappy , cheap wooden stool Buddy had to sit on to play.
Not his normal, padded throne he's used to.
Pretty bad arranging for him , by someone.
