I always say this when it comes to Buddy.... he could play anything that everyone else could play, but NO ONE could play like Buddy. Thats what makes him the GOAT.
I sat in front of Buddy's bands a lot, beginning in 1968, continuing until his death. I remember many occasions where, toward the end of a solo like this, the joy we felt would be tempered with actual concern for him. He was obviously coming very close at times, to literally killing himself for the sake of the music, and it could be scary to watch. And... It's good to remember that Buddy typically did his hardest work at the END of a performance, when he had already put out what most of us would consider 150%. I'll never forget those experiences, and the amazing music he produced over the course of his life.
I never saw Buddy live ( I was 17 when he died), but, if anything, I’ve learned that he never mailed in a performance. He brought his “A” game every single time out, even to the point of risking physical collapse. About how many performers can you say that?
Dam your so lucky to be there all the time with Buddy. I remember seeing him in Disneyland in 1974-1980 and boy he sure did play at 150% at no cost no matter where he was at. He did his best to the extreme and I mean more than a regular human can put out. He had pure power all the way till he was 69. Unbelievable fantastic drummer in the world.
Im a 63 year old musician. My father was a jazz drummer in Detroit back in the 50's he took me to see SOME GREAT drummers ALL great but like he said none more amazing than Buddy. THE GOAT!!
I saw him play when I was a kid he came to our school for a music class. We were 8 or 9 years old we walked into the hall saw a small kit like this he spoke to us for about 20 minutes about music, the drums, about if you want to play any instrument you need to practice and it takes dedication to your craft that last bit went over my head at the time. He then played for about 15 or 20 minutes showing us the different styles then he picked one of us to go up and have a bash so to speak unfortunately it wasn't me but it was one of the greatest things I ever saw. I didn't know who he was at the time it was only years later I found out who he was and how lucky we were to see this great musician live. He was and still is the king of drummer's in my humble opinion.
Well said and nobody to this current day of 2022 can even come close to him. Buddy's style and techniques are locked in a closet in his own world and is untouchable.
When he took the spotlight and did his fantastic drum solos the time the place did not matter. Buddy did what he always did separate the world of drummers into one drummer. Buddy Rich earned the title of worlds greatest drummer. i remember reading this in down beat. When Buddy took drum solos with Tommy Dorsey back in the big band days. He would start his solos and the whole audience would stop and pay attention to his virtuosity. The waiters and bartenders would Stop what they were doing to watch and hear Buddy in amazement. Even Dorsey Frank Sinatra would just stare and wonder where and the living hell could one man dominate a set of drums like Buddy Rich? this is an example of what Buddy did night after night. thanks for sharing and please send more Buddy Rich for us to appreciate. thank you
Jesus fckn holy moly. He is fckn smokin' like a gdamn Cuban cigar. RIP Buddy Rich. You set the standard for excellence, articulation, speed, control, technique, professionalism, etc...

I always liked BR since my drumming days at university but it is only now since you tube that the public has access to many of his performances and solos. After listening to many of these and taking into account the snare drum technique unique to him, speed, cross-overs, variety between different solos, tom-tom forays, cymbal work, rimshots there's not an iota of doubt this was the greatest drummer that ever lived, with the evidence available. This solo is particularly exhilarating, notable due to the build-ups in speed and the incredible snare-drum work.
Imho this is one of the greatest solos ever….it shows the mastery of rudimental technique just on the snare with just a bass drum….yet so many sounds, accents…..hand technique.
I met Buddy in 1982 when he played the Stockton Civic. He broke a snare drum batter head and immediately started playing lightly on the bottom head from underneath position. Then his drum tech changed out the snare. I sat fairly close watching in amazement and shaking my head. I thought how I'd make firewood kindling out of my drum kit when i got home. Apparently Mr Rich saw me shaking my head and i was informed that Mr Rich would like to have a chat with me at intermission. When he sat by me i nervously told him I was going to destroy my kit when I got home. Because in no way will i ever remotely be as incredibly awesome or even within a million miles of Buddy's anything. He asked my name and age (17 at the time) He explained to me never to quit drums and one day I'd find my way as long as i practiced and studied which i did vehemently. Next to the births of my sons it was the best experience of my life. Ive told both his daughter and grandson how grateful I am for not only seeing Buddy but getting the opportunity to meet him. He was a consummate professional. And an infinite class act..Still the greatest drummer ever and will always be. 36 years after his death and drummers are still trying to figure out Buddy's playing! That's all anyone needs to know..
Amen! Geese.... I started attending Buddy Rich Band in the 60's with my Mom driving. Lenny's On the T Pike. Lenny used to let me telephone him and he'd leave the line open so I could feel the band thru the phone for like 10 minutes at a time! Incredible love of music and love of budding musicians. I love Buddy and Lenny and every damn member of this band some of whom I know personally. Amazing!

His left hand in traditional grip!!!! Is astounding...@6:14 here we go , that is an incredible dynamic single stroke roll w bass drum accents wth!!!!!😱
Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer who ever lived. Speed, unmatched endurance and technique. And OH that left hand. Loved Gene Krupa almost as much for the speed he incorporated into a beautifully conceived rhythm that actually more people could relate to.
@@truthseekerKJV I've seen Palmer live, and as incredible as he is, he along with every other drummer born into this world, are not in the same stratosphere as this guy. I saw Buddy live. He just took you to a different place.
Machine gun single strokes that were so effortless to him with wrist and finger control. I still have no idea how he mastered the single stroke roll with such drumming grace. This man was the greatest drummer in the History of the World.
I saw Buddy and his band in the 70's. He had it all !! Speed, power, stamina, phrasing, and every other drumming gift that everyone envied. That's why i had to emulate other drummers No match for me. Joe Carleo - 70's Beatles wanna be drummer
I only saw him once back in 1982 and it was a night I will always remember. I was 15 at the time but watching him play the way he did, I realized, as did everyone in that room, that we were witnessing an astonishing marvel of technical and musical virtuosity that was simply breathtaking. I am so deeply grateful for the footage that was preserved and to be able to see it on RUclips
I get chills listening to this. I only got see him in person twice, but I thank god that I did. Awesome single stroke speed played wirh passion like no other.
Ian Paice drew so much of his repertoire from this cat. Listen to "The Mule" on Deep Purple's "Made In Japan" double LP from '72. His snare work was superlative as well.
What amazed me is that he never had water at his disposal and only used the towel to dry off in between charts. With all buckets of sweat that poured off of him while playing, I was concerned about a collapse from dehydration at some point.
What a nice display of rudiments .playing it the way we would normally play it ..then his way ..and then crazy fast and mixing up so many ideas.. the guy really was a master.. saw him at Disneyland about 15 times.. in the mid 70s ..what a thrill
I wanted to be a drummer because of the Beatles but it was Buddy Rich who was my drumming idol. Unfortunately I could never attain that speed not comprehend how it was possible so I gave it up.
I am a fan of great drumming, and though I like more groove oriented styles rather than speed, I must admit that he's the most incredible guy I have ever seen on the kit and the only one who actually looks like he's drumming on his own drumming.
Love the overhead shots of him playing traditional grip, going left and right from the floor tome to the snare and back. Amazing. Also, this is mixed footage because you see Rogers and Slingerland drums on some of the close ups. Amazing, consistent speed, and man could be make a drum kit bark.
That's a truly hard to believe solo. I have a tough time deciding if I find this or Carl Palmer on Karn Evil 9 more impressive. They are both elite videos for different reasons. Rich for mind bending technique, Palmer for defining rock and roll. I love youtube.
Yes I see my friend Trumpeter Mike Price in this video Mike played with Buddy in 69 and 70 and then again it’s 72 and buddy came through LA doing a short stint!
Incroyable ce solo ! Moi, qui aie joué de la batterie pendant plusieurs années, je n'ai jamais vu une telle technique, dans les poignets, une telle maitrise des baguettes de la part de Buddy ! Phénoménal ! Impressionnant !
Buddy's traditional left hand technique enables his speed. I argue constantly that with the rock style (holding the stick like a chicken leg) its simply not possible to get anywhere near his speed., Also try to do his thing where he slows down and brings his roll to a whisper, then back up. There's no way you can define that gradient without Buddy's grip...
I always say this when it comes to Buddy.... he could play anything that everyone else could play, but NO ONE could play like Buddy. Thats what makes him the GOAT.

His snare work beats the speed of any machine gun.
