I've only had to deal with a nasty bacterial ear infection once with one of the dogs I fostered. The vet prescribed antibiotics, of course, and gave me a cream to use similar to what you've shown here: very thick paste. My "go to" addition has always been aloe and Bag Balm, in combination, for their anti-bacterial and soothing properties. I used those two -- aloe first and then a thin coat of Bag Balm -- on the ear flap and edge near to the ear opening and a bit up the skin side of the ear flap. The purpose was to protect from bacterial spread from the infection discharge. I do not put combination into the ear canal nor the opening but just up close to the opening after I've closely clipped any underside ear flap hairs. I had once again checked with the canine specialist vet at Purdue Vet College before I tried the protocol and process and got thumbs up. My own vet also gave the process thumbs up. This particular dog was prone to ear infections in that same ear [I keep in touch with the people who adopt dogs I've fostered]; I'd gifted an aloe plant to the adopters along with a can of Bag Balm "just in case." Yes,and also a groomer..We often see infections before vets do,since we see dogs more often than vets do,such as every 4 to 6 weeks..so what a good professional groomer will do is clean the ear,and recommend the client to a vet..we see this kind of stuff daily..antibiotics or not,we still have an obligation to Clean it first..
This was NOT a job for a groomer. Forceps, a wire brush, then a the clippers? Seriously? That poor elderly dog had to put up with too much. Saying ok buddy means nothing to the dog. What you did was superficial, it will not have dealt with the actual infection and even set up the circumstances for it to get worse over time. The cleansers needed more time to work and should have been gently massaged towards the exit of the ear canal and then gently removed. The crusts should have softened and wiped away gently NOT scraped off with a wire brush. That part made me wince - and it was a large brush for such a small dog. As for the electric clippers, No way. The wire brush and the clippers could worsen the infection by scratching the skin even if you are trying to be gentle. The fact that you tried to be gentle means nothing to the dog. and had no effect on the situation. That dog should have been taken to a vet, which is what you should have told the owner to do. After cleaning, a course of antibiotics and antifungals should have commenced without delay. I also don’t like that cord around the little dog’s neck. It might be suitable for grooming but not for this painful procedure. I hope viewers do not they to copy what they saw.
@ We appreciate your comment, but unfortunately you're 100% wrong about every single thing you're saying in it. As professional pet groomers this is part of our job, we clean and aid infected ears all of the time. You know absolutely nothing about the procedure I am doing in this video. If you're not a professional groomer and know nothing about it, you should probably withhold from leaving a comment like this. You come off so mean spirited and callous that it would offend you in any way that I say "ok buddy" while being nice to this dog and trying to help. It's actually quite concerning that you would be so bothered by kindness toward an innocent animal. We will be adressing this in an upcoming podcast episode.

Yes,and also a groomer..We often see infections before vets do,since we see dogs more often than vets do,such as every 4 to 6 weeks..so what a good professional groomer will do is clean the ear,and recommend the client to a vet..we see this kind of stuff daily..antibiotics or not,we still have an obligation to Clean it first..
