  • Gram Parsons' song.
    Lyrics:
In South Carolina, there's many tall pines
And I remember the oak trees that we used to climb
And now when I'm lonesome I always pretend
That I'm gettin the feel of hickory wind
I started out younger, had most everything
All the riches and pleasures, what else can life bring?
But it makes me feel better each time it begins
    Callin' me home, hickory wind
Its a hard way to find out that trouble is real
In a faraway city with a faraway feel
But it makes me feel better each time it begins
    Callin' me home, hickory wind
Callin' me home to hickory wind

North Carolina... a place called something Pines, where my man, Special Forces SGM went for his stroke emergency help.
This song takes me there every-time I hear it.
A painful memory, 1989. Cpt Rodriduez and I driving to NC from VA to see him.
Thank you God for keeping him alive all these years. Severely handicapped, but alive.

David Rawlings is a genius at harmonies! He blends so well with Gillian, it's like they are two sides of the same coin! Love Gram and love that they covered this song.

Love this and love Gram's version, and recently I discovered Keith Richard's version and it has almost become my new favorite.

This is a fitting cover of a timeless song. If anyone was to cover Gram Parsons, I'm glad Gillian Welch did. She and Emmylou Harris have my two favorite voices in music.

Me too but I'd add Maria Mckee, "Dixie Storms" from the Lone Justice album is iconic. Almost a modern Hickory Wind, both about being homesick...

Despite loving Gram's, Emmylou's and others versions this has to be the best. It's so haunting and lovely at the same time. Thanks Gram for writing it.

While I love Gram Parson's version but I must say this one has hit me hard. My sister died two days ago and she is was from South Carolina. My father was her biological father from his first wife but I never knew her until two years ago. My dad had not seen her since she was 2 years ago and months before he died I found her and they met after 67 years. And now she has died and forever they will be together. This song has new meaning for me and I dedicate it to Pat....my sister. A beautiful version. I'll suggest it be played at her funeral.

I'm a stickler for correct credit being due to songwriters where it's due, but...
the argument that Sylvia wrote this is highly debatable and I don't think the idea should presented as fact until there something even resembling proof on the table.

  • @multiheadable
    @multiheadable 13 лет назад

@matt1284508 Matt I think that is a bit cynical. Of course Gram was from Florida, and doesnt everybody miss their home if they cant go there, especially if it is in the country, not very relevant today.

Nice, except Gram Parsons didn't write the song. A woman named Sylvia Sammons, who was actually born in South Carolina and has memories of growing up there, wrote it. Parsons only "borrowed" it from her. Parsons was born in Florida, and spent all his young life there. Look it up on the Web, it's easy to find.

    • @margaretross9150

Never proven that the song was written by anyone other than Gram Parsons and Bob Buchanan while on the Southwest Chief. And Gram spent his first 12 years in Waycross, Georgia, and then moved to Florida after the death of his father.

I hope that after two years you have changed your mind because your position then prevented you from enjoying a beautiful version of Gram's song. Also fyi 'mediocity at it's zenith' is contradictory. The absolute you needed was 'nadir'.
