I've been lucky that I've never had a betta that wanted to rest against the intake tube. How about a prefilter sponge to fit on the intake tube? Or would it be too rough and risk damaging the fish? The other problem besides the intake is of course the outflow. You don't want too fast or strong an outflow! My last betta, the way I had the decorations in his tank set up, I could put a floating log directly underneath the filter outflow and it would be wedged in there, and then I put a square of sponge overtop of it so the outflow would diffuse through the sponge instead of hitting the water directly. My betta loved to hide in the log despite the outflow directly over top of it, because the sponge diffused all the outflow away, so no trouble at all.

What about the HOB filters that don’t have the pipe but has the intake on the bottom?
