I started playing Deadlock at the start of the pandemic and it really gave me a much-needed time sink to keep my sanity. After not being super impressed initially, it really got me in the end and convinced me to get the DLC, which really just expanded on the whole experience. The new photo mode they added last year has been amazing. And like you said, that soundtrack absolutely slaps. I especially love the different variants of the music between the tactical screen and the actual battle playing out. Skirmish 3 always gets me hype.
Its skirmish 2 for me. Watching replay whenever the track lines up and you see all the wings of vipers form up and start charging the cylon fleet as the bagpipes start to hit gets me every time.
3:25 I know the feeling. I've always liked to use World In Conflict and its DLC in Soviet Assault to show how a well written and acted cast can really elevate an RTS game and make you truly care about your units and feel something for them when they are lost, even if they are just a bunch of pixels on a screen.
I have not played the game but I love the sound track. I am suckered for coral music mixed with electronics music. Give it a vague Sicfi ascetic and I got it on repeat.
@@MrMartechi It really did have some great missions in it (I love the one in the battlestar graveyard.) I also feel Operation Anabasis could have been part of the main game for how much replaysbility it brought.
Comparing almost any game to the masterpiece that is Homeworld is simply unfair. How that has not been picked up for TV/Movie is beyond me. Great lore, fantastic ship design. And it *did* have an amazing story, at least in game 1.
Agreed. I really just wanted some mercury battlestars so bought the modern ship pack. The main issue I have is that the co-op multiplayer, doesn't look like you can choose who you are facing which is weird. So it's random each time. Nice review, cheers.
7:35 "No consequences." Actually if you let Cylon fleets linger above a colony, its loyalty will drop turn by turn until it leaves the Quorum and you lose its resources. If the Quorum drops below 6, you can't advance the plot and you bleed Requisition Points.
Awesome game! I recommend playing on max difficulty for max enjoyment. Otherwise it is a bit too easy. It is 3D because, of course. It matters as units can block others from firing, they can collide, battlestars can shield fleet with flack guns etc. But you cannot roll your units. And that is a problem because the main battery of every battlestar is on top of it therefor you often do turns just so your ships could get all their guns to bear. And usually missions all about that dash towards the bottom of the map just so you could fire. And it is made just so the a battle could look pretty. But it is a minor complain (especially now, when you can plan movement for all your units at the same time, at release you had to do it one by one), the other is that more advanced enemy ships are campaign locked and are fielded rather late. As for DLCs: Broken Alliance is the only one that happens during the original campaign and it is pretty good so I recommend to get it together with the base game. All other DLCs take place later in such order: OG campaign + Broken Alliance > Sin & Sacrifice (really good story imho) > Resurrection > Ghost Fleet Offensive > Armistice. Besides story, DLCs usually add things like new music tracks, radio chatter, sometimes units & munitions. It is also recommended NOT to transfer progress from your previous campaigns. You may end up very overpowered and go through missions quickly. And the low number of story missions in every DLC is my main complain against them. The rest of DLCs has no story but adds a bit of variety: Reinforcement pack - just new ships & munitions to play with. Not really needed, mostly for fans. Quite cheap. I had it but ended up not really using stuff from it. But it is always nice to have more diverse enemies. Anabasis - new game mode where you escape with your fleet and the Cylons constantly chase you. I personally didn't like it. From positives - adds more resource missions to the OG campaign keeping things fresh. Also new munitions (I rarely use anything but basic torpedoes from the base game) - Cylons get nice one - Comet PCM which makes your guided munitions to follow it. Makes for scary moments when you try to use nuke but Cylons get it to return back to your ship :) Modern Ship Pack - has nothing to do with the camping. Adds ships from the TV show to the game for multiplayer and skirmish. You can check whether Adama had any chance against Cain and her Pegasus. To end things... it is VERY niche game. Also, it is one of the rare examples where game based on franchise is good. Maybe DLCs aren't too spectacular but I imho worth it anyway.
I keep getting back to the game by DLCs adding on to the campaign. Entirely new campaign chapters, story elements, side missions, etc had actually a lot more appeal for me than just the added units and options for skirmish or multiplayer. While I still think some of the DLCs for this game are definitively overpriced, I do believe the way they are dealt with here is pretty unique. Having played the campaign first when the game came out and returning to it ever since with big DLC releases, it does feel as though I stayed through the entire Cylon War, seeing new units being introduced, new technologies, and chapters to the colonial war effort. In that way, it has been a lot more rewarding than I usually feel about post-release content.
If you want to play a really good BSG space combat game, you might want to check out Diaspora: Shattered Armistice. It's a total conversion mod for Freespace 2 that excellently captures the look, feel, and sound of reboot BSG. Sadly it is pretty small, there is only a few missions and a small number flyable ships, but everything there is really high quality, and it is free, you don't even need to buy Freespace 2 to play it.
Hey :) If you like Jupiter: The Nexus Incident and Homeworld, maybe take a look at Nebulous: Fleet Command. It is a very in depth space RTS that is currently in Early access and hat ab big update recently. I suspect it might be right up your ally :P
BSG Deadlock is my go to sci-fy TBS game. I sunk over 160 hours into it, through clever use of sales and patience managed to get all of the DLC´s at the end for reasonable amount. I always came back to it, tackling harder and harder difficulty, doing 100% completion on all achievements, although i yet have to beat all of the campaigns at hardest difficulty. If you are planning snatching on DLC´s, you definetely have to take the Sin and Sacrifice, its probably the strongest one, at least in my subjective view, mainly bcs of a briliant campaign. The other would be The Broken Aliance, which adds sort-of an side-mission story-line for the rebels, and also adds one of the best ships for colonials, Minerva battlestar and Assult Raptor. When it comes to skirmish and MP, well i never used honestly it, as my interested was solely on campaign and its resource management/ tactical fights aspect. Over-all, i agree that to pay for all of these DLC is bit much, and i dont like that aproach where one games has so many DLC, that without them feels hollow, which this is a kinda of an case, but i DEFINITELY got my money worth of it. Also, if you ever wish so, i can totaly crush you in MP with a Mercury class :D
I love this game so much. I really love the ship/fleet management and put a huge effort into it. I add aspects that really don't exist in the game, like naming conventions for Classes, and making fleets based on historical reality. My favourite is heading in against the Cylons with HMS Ajax, Achilles and Exeter. Generally having the 6" Cruisers be Rangers and the 8" a Janus or Heracles, although I've started playing with Minervas named after 8" ers. You're right about the voice acting, and more character depth would be great. Also a greater variety of basic missions would help. There is only so many times you can realistically save the same Seed Bank. I don't mind the DLC's and I wish they were still pumping them out. The actual combat is terrific, and the 3d is brilliant. Ripping apart a Cerberus in one turn with a 7 stack of mixed Colonial ships sheltering behind a flack wall is just a joy!!
Oh thank you for pointing that at 1:46min. The DLC's do not add much and it does not interferer with the main game. I am thinking it's both Slitherine Ltd./Black Lab Games put out those DLC's because of everyone doing microtransactions and "Surprise Mechanics". The game is nothing new for Slitherine Ltd./Black Lab Games the basically took their old game "Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy" and painted it with Battlestar Galactica Deadlock while throwing in microtransactions. The one game that should be made into a Battlestar Galactica game is "Angels Fall First". Just think about jumping into a Viper or Raptor to fight off toasters. They could probably add the Galactica-type Battlestar in the game too.
Sounds like my best bet is to wait for a sale and snap up the base game, plus all the DLC to compensate for the lack of content in the base game, I really wanna get my hands on a playable Mercury-class...
The main problem with this game is... It could easily have been a mod or DLC for Starhammer. The other problem is..... The publisher .... Slitherine are notoriously greedy.
You DO NOT, need any of the DLC! In fact you can divide the DLC in to 2 groups (which steam does for you) Season 1 which includes Add ons for the base game (which add some new ships, equipment and more story content, i recommend them), and i think the Anbrosa DLC. Season 2 is like 4 separate campaigns that act completely differently to the base campaign, and as of late the modern ships pack. On a personal note, While game is FUN BY GOD it gets tedious after a while.
big problem I had with this was just how pointless it was to try and make specific fleets. Should I have a small fleet for small engangements? No... Just doomstack everything. There is "intel" but it's information that doesn't actually help you at all lol.
*Skirmish 3 is, hands down (and any other argument is invalid, sorry) t h e b e s t space battle theme done to date* It captures the action, grip and tension of a battle, not heroics or sentimental side of a battle like Fall of Daidalos(wich is God-Tier), this song is just too perfect. ... allthough the title is lackluster to say the least, but it makes sense...I think
Hmm... I'm extremely weary of strategy games that have so much DLC. If I only bought the base game I would end up feeling like I'm missing out on the 'real' experience, but then if I take a look at the big list of DLCs and their hefty associated price tag it all just seems too much. It's almost as if the devs are trying to nickel and dime me about the content. So in the end I just skip over the game entirely. Paradox games are especially bad for me like that.

That’s so true. Act of War is another good example
I have not played the game but I love the sound track. I am suckered for coral music mixed with electronics music. Give it a vague Sicfi ascetic and I got it on repeat.
If you get the 'Sin & Sacrifice' dlc, it adds radio chatter to the battles, easily filling the quiet ambiance of space.
Out of all the DLCs, this one felt the most like it should've been part of the base game.

Are you going to review Starwars: Empire at war or Sword of the Stars?
Well those music clues are like a cheap version of Bear McCreary if you really listen to it but I agree they had quite a good impostor
Comment
I think that's a very good point, worth considering.
@@SideAdventure that's a ver my inciteful point
Campaign mode has similar consequences to XCom 1 IMO. If you do poorly at defending one of the colonies they will withdraw from the colonial alliance
