- Today, I'm exploring and talking about the history of Smith-9th Streets station, an elevated station on the IND Culver Line which is the tallest station in the NYC Subway System! This video serves as part one of my Station Marathon Special, and checks off "tallest station" from my list.
I remember going here on 9/11 and people were standing on the back of that platform with their late 90’s camcorders, en masse. Half of Manhattan was covered in grey smoke, amidst the clear blue sky. I still have the image seared in my head. RIP
Working EMS in the 80s we made a few good rescues from the tracks up there. 🤘
Thank you for this stunningly beautiful exposé....
I remember this station. I used to go there since I was younger where they used to take the F train. It also has a nice looking view of Carroll Gardens, Downtown Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan, and Park Slope. On the other side, it has the view of the Gowanus Expressway viaduct, Statue of Liberty and Red Hook. Every 4th of July, they usually set off fireworks in one of the neighborhoods, but occasionally, fireworks might show up there.
My time living in NYC was amazing despite the fact that i lived next to the noise of this train station, the noise of the BQE, and the stink of the gowanus. fond memories.
I take the train here every morning
Have you considered checking out east 180 st in the bronx?
I've heard of it! I'll try to visit in a future video.
My home station. those stairs when the escalator doesn't work will give you a great workout. 98 feet high from ground to platform.
walk on the tracks toward 4th and ninth. youll find a ladder, go down and there youll be in a abandoned fire escape. walk down until you find a latch, open the latch, go down, youll find the best view.
Two bits of trivia about Smith-9th Street:
1. It's the only station where the platform crosses a body of water.
2. From 1933-1976 the station didn't even have escalators, despite it being so high.
Thanks for sharing!
What about Far Rockaway Broad channel station in queens A train?
@@mcon30 no part of either platform is over or under a body of water.
One day operating a f train at the beginning of the south bound platform before I entered the station were the the do not enter sign is a spotted a couple outside the station I guess enjoying the view at a dangerous area I was able to stop the train short we’re their were and ask them to leave They comply I was able to enter the station without incident And since they comply with out fuss I didn’t need to call police
There’s something I wanna Add here: when the station opened the IND “A” Train Used to Stop here at the Smith 9th Street station then later on the IND “D” Train and IND “E” Trains then during the 1960-1970s some F Trains would run Express past Jay Street I have fanned here recently its really good! :)
Renovated a couple of years ago, yet no elevator was installed!
I used to transfer here when I went from Greenpoint to see my girlfriend who lived in Park Slope. Needless to say, fond memories. Serious question, I don't remember the maps and illustrations on the windows in the passageway to switch tracks. When were they installed, or did I just have my mind on other things when I walked pass them in the 1990s?
They were installed as part of the renovation in the 2010s, I believe.
Ayyyy I live just by 15th street station on the F/G
15th is my home station as well!
Yeah, I live on on 14th street and the entrance I usually take is right on the side of Prospect park
@@jbf19kd i usually use the entrance on Windsor Place
I just made a video about this Station and congrats on 300 Subs
Thank you! I really like your videos
@@nicobknyc Thanks
Do both the GG (I'm probably dating myself here) and the Culver stop at this platform? Where do they diverge?
Bro really made a whole new video just to remove that part 1:27 in the old video lol
Yessir
And yeah you were right idk why I got confused by that- I got confused because the express doesn't stop there but in reality the sign was just saying it was the Queens Boulevard Express/Sixth Avenue Local services ([F]).
Between Smith and 9th and 4th and 9th there a section between the 2 express tracks that has nothing in it . I wonder if tracks were ever there .
There was a track there at one time but it was removed during the last renovation of the viaduct.
