Well I just got mine in and oh man do I love it!
I opted for the "classic" style F77 in industrial grey and the first thing I noticed: Its HEAVY. Apparently its 8.3lbs. You might not think thats a big deal since its your desk holding that weight, not you. - till you want to adjust how your sitting and try to move the keyboard. This thing don't wanna move. It really does feel like an old a piece of industrial equipment.
The keys are noticeably lighter, and the clicking they make sounds different, but it still has that bucking spring feel to everything. Which is great that is exactly what I wanted because I personally just don't like Cherry MX and the MX Like key switches. Something about them feels... artificial? That the tactile "bump" and "click" aren't part of the actuating mechanism at all - because they aren't they are tacked on.

Now I'm using ErgoCompressed with Box Jade keyswitches and MDA keycap profile. Running QMK firmware so all the customisability I can imagine. A few keys have gotten a little sticky feeling, so it might have dust inside, but not sure if its meant to be opened. I’d expect an expensive keyboard to last well past a decade with rough heavy typing. But i guess it ends up being like cloth, where people get new stuff when see something they like and replace older stuff.

"I feel like you wouldn't like that if it wasn't so obscure" - so what who cares? Humans value things for more than just their pure utilitarianness, and that's a good thing, everything would be boring if we picked things based purely on practical value. Something looking aesthetically appealing has just the same implications as liking something that's obscure. The cultural significance, who uses/used it, how popular/obsucre it is, how old/new it is, whether it has properties that nothing else has (even if those properties aren't 'better'), and overall just the emotional feeling you get from objects, are all important factors in deciding what things you want/like.
Unless we're talking about something that *has* to be super utlitarian like a satellite that needs to be small, lightweight and functional, then all of these things are very important factors to us as humans. I think it's part of the same part of us that leads to us creating art. I think it's something we need and almost as strong if not stronger than other base desires like sex or social acceptance. If we built the buildings in cities to be purely practical in their design it would have an extremely negative impact on the mental health of the people there (this has actually been studied with buildings). It's absolutely everywhere and is so deeply entrenched in us that even businesses do it when there's no or even a negative profit from it.
It's why I love my 122 key Model M made by IBM and try to get other people interested in it, but then at the same time I actually dislike the Unicomp versions. Unicomp just bought the patent and machinery from IBM and the modern ones they build are identical to the original IBM ones, except they're newer and have a Unicomp logo. Despite being identical I feel completely differently about each one, and even typing on a Unicomp doesn't feel as good to me as the IBM, despite the fact that the pure physical sensation is the same. Had Unicomp done what has been done in this video and redesined it then I'm sure I'd really like them, but the lack of a history, lack of age of the keyboards, and the total unoriginality behind the company now building them all have an impact on if I actually like the keyboard, as it does with most people (and if not wih keyboard, definitely with other things in your life), because we're humans not robots.
It's also why on r mechanicalkeyboards on reddit you see incredibly similar looking keyboards, but people have such wildly different feelings about them.

Correction: The original IBM Model F was released in 1982, and designed to be less expensive to manufacture, and have lower keyboard height, than its beamspring predecessors (e.g. 5251 and 3278). Model M, in turn was released in 1985, intended to be "as good as" the Model F, but even less expensive to manufacture.
In terms of quality of feel, beamsprings [keyboard nirvana] > Model F > Model M > every other keyboard ever manufactured.

Wendell, you're not alone! I started out typing on an Atari 1200XL. Out of the entire lineup and vs. C64 and Apple, it had the nicest keyboard. I always missed the feel of it. For years I wandered the abyss that is domed keyboards, hating every minute of using them. Then, I finally bought a keyboard with some Cherry MX Browns... Even though the Atari was not the same switch at all, it had much the same feel... It's nice to have a quality keyboard that you know will last more than a couple of years as long as you take care of it, and every now and then you DO have to buy yourself something nice to remind you why you work in the first place.

I don't really understand keyboard snobbism, I am around computers for 27 years and work daily on a keyboard 10-12 hours for at least 15 years. I had all kinds of keyboards, including model M and model F. They're fine, whatever, can't really tell any difference between them and chinese repro-switch mechanical keyboards. Still ended up using K120 from logitech cheapo daily for nearly 10 years because I got 5 of them at a discount years ago and it doesn't seem I'll burn through them anytime soon. But seeing Wendell's nerdgasms over trivial matters is always worth watching the video.

Sounds like you're having fun there. Do you think that you'll 'switch' to it, or will it be more of an alternative / on a secondary computer?
Interesting to know that I could always wire a solenoid up to my keyboard with MX Greens, if it's not offensive enough :-p

Pure typing heaven. Remember that key racket at the Old AA back in the 80's reservations center, imagine about 300 keyboards working at the same time.

Okay, I had to get my 1995 Model M out of the closet and caress it for a while. Mine is PS/2 and has a hole in the back for a speaker. I think it came from an RS/6000.

I would've considered this keyboard more if they had a full 104 key or 122 key layout. For me, if I'm gonna drop several hundred dollars on a keyboard, I better get at least 100 keys.

For all of those Model M lunatics out there, back when I was working as a Janitor at a Education Center on USMC Camp Lejeune, (roughly 2011) I was made to clean out a storage room filled 10 ft tall by 4ft by 4 ft full of 1980's IBM Computers still in the box, all with Model M keyboards in them. When I say "clean it out" I mean everything in that room was covered in mold from hurricane damage and was told to throw it all in the dumpster. At least 30 unused model M's, trashed.

    • @6mtzhp55
      @6mtzhp55 4 года назад

Ironically, they probably all worked fine. I pulled one out of a dumpster full of water. Aside from taking it apart for a deep scrub, it works. It worked before I cleaned it even, I just didn't want to touch it.
