Not defending the movie, but according to the wiki..:
An earlier draft of the script revealed the reason behind Stormella's hostility toward Santa and the Elves: she was Santa's jilted ex-girlfriend and responsible for Santa setting up headquarters at the North Pole in the first place. She even kept his picture hidden under her mattress. However, the producer nixed this idea claiming, "You just can't do that. This is a kid's show."

There is actually more information about the films production courtisey of SonictheShapeshifter a.k.a. LadyFoxling who met the screenwriter for the film. she stated the following
"I actually met the screenwriter for this movie and he's a really cool guy. He talked to me about what went into the making of this, and he wanted to add darker elements to the plot and explained a lot of things about it that didn't make it to the final cut (including why the fairies were following Rudolph everywhere and cared about specifically him--they were his guardians and gave him the light in his nose, and Stormella was initially rejected by Santa in favor of Mrs. Claus, causing a triangle conflict and also explaining why she had a cold heart, among other things!) He explained to me that the reason why Santa in this version of the story was supportive of Rudolph is because he didn't like how Santa was only nice to Rudolph after Rudolph became of use to him in the claymation, so he wanted Santa to be a character who genuinely cared about people in this cartoon--which I think makes sense because we're talking about a big fat guy who likes to deliver toys to kids all over the world for no profit.
I think that it's a bit ignorant to suggest that the cast of the movie should be condemned for not all looking identical to each other, not just for political correct reasons, but because in real life people are racially diverse and come in all shapes and sizes and STILL people are actively bullied. They don't all need to be clones for one person in particular to stand out and be picked on for it. I think it was actually really better of them to color and draw the characters in different ethnicities because they could have been lazier and literally copied the animation cels so that every character was literally identical. Because it took more effort to do what they did I don't think they should be condemned for it; also, it probably did make some minority people happy. Christmas movies are in general all white for cast; political correctness aside, isn't it okay for there to be a Rudolph tale where there are some other races present? Santa isn't only delivering toys to white kids after all according to how we perceive his mythos.
One last thing I want to point out before watching other videos is, "Ruddy" was not a typo, it was an insult. Rudolph's nickname in the film was "Rudy" so calling him "Ruddy" was an insult to him; also, it just happens to have red-in-the-face for a definition, it's an actual word. (And in Britain it has the same connotation as "bloody" so it's just a straight-up insult in general).
For what it is it certainly could have been better. but it did do a lot of things enjoyably."
"The problem was corporate interference. Be glad that Rudolph didn't look like a carebear; the screenwriter pushed hard for Rudolph to look as good as he did, the animation crew cut corners, and a lot of the darker undertones the guy wanted to include to make the story more compelling got vetoed by the executives who wanted the final product to be as inoffensive as possible"
That is sad. This could have been a decent film but that is what happens when a direct to video company(rather than a risk taker like Disney) that sells animation as a cheap kids babysitter makes your film.

The thing is, Rudolph had already saved her life. They could have used that as an epiphany moment for her to decide to turn nicer voluntarily, especially if they added some dialogue to actually justify her reasoning for the change. Sure, it may have felt forced and unrealistic, but that’s par for the course for Christmas specials, and it’s still a lot better than a wish coming out of nowhere and basically brainwashing her. Of course, her voluntarily turning nice would be dependent on the quality of the writing involved, so maybe they just decided that was too much work.

I'll have to give Goodtimes some credit. Blitzen's a way better father than Donner. He's actually proud of son's weird deformity and supports him, while Donner was ashamed of Rudolph and was more than ready to take him out back and shoot him. Also Blitzen's voiced by Gary Chalk which is like a plus.

I thought so too since, Santa Claus and Rudolph's dad both come off a hell of a lot better than they came off in Rankin & Bass movie. I feel like this one had some elements that didn't work (the annoying sprites and the bad characters whose irritation was rational rather than based on evilness). But it kind of made up for it by having Rudolph's struggles come off as realistic and you feel bad for him, but they fact that he had support from his dad and Santa seems like a really positive aspect of the movie since Rudolph would look up to both.

      nice person ≠ good character
Donner being a dick to his son added conflict to the story, wich is sorely lacking in the Good Times version.
yeah he got laughed at in that one scene in school, and that one song where everyone calls him a weirdo to wich he seems oblivious, but overall the "bullying" was very chill, and him being hated by the girl's boyfriend and getting disqualified from the race is totally his fault and not the others being dicks to him (it's bullshit that the guy who was obviously cheating won anyway, but still).
no one seems to really hate Rudolph, wich weakens the all point of the story, while the Rankin Bass special made you feel for the guy, and thus made for a more satisfying resolution at the end.
also Donner was a consistant character, while Blitzen just starts off embarassed by Rudolph, making you think they're gonna do the "daddy issues" story again, but then they immediately pull a 180, when the mother tells him that there's nothing wrong with Ruldolph, making the previous scene establishing him to be not proud of his son, completely useless now, without even adding water.

    • @Calmoose415
      @Calmoose415 3 года назад +14

While I agree Santa in this movie was better, I feel like Donner was a bit more interesting. Donner had the right idea, but his methods just weren't very good. At least he didn't call Rudolph's nose "an accident" like Blitzen did. He even feels bad for trying to hide Rudolph's nose and even goes out into the wild to find his son and bring him home, that's dedication for ya.

I actually loved this movie as a child and the moment when Rudolph laughed with Slylie over his red nose was always really remarkable for me, because I realized, if you can laugh over your own mistakes, you are a lot stronger. He finally accepts it and this is something I haven't seen in another movie since. In all the other movies the characters NEED a PROOF that their mistakes are worth something in another way. And while Rudolph learns that in the end, too, he first realizes, that it's not the world's end, that you can love yourself by just laughing about your own mistakes.
That said... the German voice cast sounded better xD
And what else is really remarkable is, that this scene doesn't even look forced or something. I felt that :O

Evil people are a detriment to society as a whole, they spread misery among others and get enjoyment out of it. How is it "evil" to _fix_ them? Isn't that part of what punishment is supposed to do, in a more indirect way?
Even if she was miserable as a result, how is that not justified in the face of what she would inevitably do, and probably already has done, to others, with little to no _real_ provocation? (As Phelous pointed out, she would have likely caused that storm even if random wildlife that didn't even know about the bridge ban and had nothing to do with the christmas village had crossed the bridge instead of those christmas reindeer.)
Additionally, did she seem miserable to you after she was changed? She immediately, happily, showered her penguin butler in smooches after finally realizing that he's cute/finally being able to get enjoyment out of his cuteness. Doesn't seem like a miserable existence to me.
This concept of being overly nice to bad people, and condemning acts of retribution or even reparation, has to _stop._ It's causing much more damage, to much more undeserving targets, than it prevents.

22:34 The funny thing is, Rankin-Bass _also_ did a retcon that revealed that the storm didn’t occur naturally. In _Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July,_ it turns out to have been caused by an ice wizard named Winterbolt. This is _also_ connected to the origins of Rudolph’s shiny nose here, as it’s revealed that the dying Lady Boreal, Queen of the Northern Lights, transferred the last of her powers to Rudolph when he was born at the same time that Winterbolt finally awoke from the deep sleep that she had put him in.
It feels like they were going for a retelling of the first story with the elements revealed later on, or at least substitutes thereof- Stormella for Winterbolt, the Sprites for Lady Boreal- though Stormella meets a _much_ happier fate than Winterbolt did.

Not that this would've fixed the movie, but they could've just written the villains to be either underhanded or overreactive if they wanted to properly portray them as such. First, make the two elves confess their accidental destruction of the sculptures right away but make Stormella still refuse them passage on her bridge in the future because of this. Second, not have Rudolph and Zoey about to swap spit and instead just actually be talking when Arrow starts acting jealous; and when the reindeer games start make him pretend to be blinded by Rudolph's nose so the judges disqualify him from the rest of the games. Rankin Bass might've had weird and jerky stop motion animation, questionable and/or outdated ideas, and multiple instances of convenient writing, but at least you felt sorry for the characters you were supposed to feel sorry for and understood why they were considered misfits or outcasts. Here, the villains are shown quite clearly to have justification for their anger.

They always find ways to cause trouble. What's really _lost_ by making a person not-bad? And in comparison to that... what is gained in return?

And I’m also saying it’s a shit way to reform her. This is literally a situation where talking to her and convincing her to not be evil would make sense, and they don’t do that. Maybe have her and Santa talk things through and reach a deal that would leave both sides satisfied, maybe just wish for her to not bother anyone in general? What is it about wishing her good that is supposedly better over these solutions I presented?

Guaranteed effectiveness, guaranteed success, minimal suffering. By wishing her nice, she is now nice, deep down. Therefore, she is now happy when she can do good things, and will naturally avoid doing bad things without a magical wish blocking her from doing so even when she wants to. She will never even _want_ to do bad. By being converted to good, not only _is_ she likely to be a happier person overall, but she also now _deserves_ it for being a good person.
By trying a different solution, there would be a risk of an inferior end result, a possibility of loopholes to exploit later by the angry and still-malicious ice witch, or possibly even deadly side effects as the wish unintentionally prevents her from even talking to people to, say, buy food for example. You're trying to use soft manipulation to achieve the same result, and if that doesn't work, try to cage the problem instead of burning it out at the root.
Also, and this is important, I was not looking at alternate solutions in the initial response. I was analyzing only the solution that was already there, because to me it is good enough. So this is a different discussion than the one I was "signing up for", so to speak.

Stormella wasn’t even really evil to begin with! She just seemed so cold and distant because everyone kept calling her “mean” and talking smack about her, her property was destroyed and she wasn’t allowed to get any compensation for it or even justice, and she never tortured anyone for fun, and she always kept her word. I mean yeah she may have kept Zoey captive but look at the size of her prison! There’s a cave I the background that looks rather deep, Zoey is inside where it is nice and warm, and she has full Mobility inside her prison. Stormella even explains what Zoey did wrong and then doesn’t do anything else to her! Zoey walked across that bridge on her free will and wasn’t tricked into doing it either unlike other movies where someone ends up doing something wrong. Scar tricked Simba into luring Mufasa to his death, Maleficent entranced Aurora to touch the spindle on the spinning wheel, and Lady Tremaine actually uses words to get her daughters to rip apart Cinderella’s dress. Stormella did nothing shady and did explain that there would be consequences if anyone in town had used the bridge as a result of her being denied the chance to get justice for her property damages and punish those who were responsible for it. She had every right to deny usage of the bridge as t was literally the only way she could make sure no one damaged any more of her property.

This year, as either a Creepypasta or a sketch in a review, Phelous should do "Old Man Saves Christmas" a.k.a. Old Man RUINS Christmas. Filling in for Santa Claus, he has to deliver presents around the world. Along the way, he accidentally drops some in the ocean (they're completely useless now), keeps some for himself, or gives them to the wrong people. Ho Ho Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. There's a Golden Films Christmas elf movie, so if Phelous reviews that this year, he could do Old Man Ruins Christmas as an aside.

Once the kits are old enough to fend for themselves everyone split up to live on their own until next mating season.

2015 seems to be the year I started turning away from The Nostalgia Critic, and towards Phelous. His skewering of bad horror films was decent, and my friend and I got big laughs out of 'The Pooh Train' review...though the animated reviews are inspiring me to consider doing a few of my own.

Agreed! The Nostalgia Critic has just been plain _bad_ for at least the last year to the point that I've pretty much given up on him. On the other hand I think Phelous is getting _better_. While I did like his horror movie reviews (though they could sometimes be a little boring, mostly because of bad horror movies having the same damn tropes all the time), I'm glad he's been mixing it up and doing more animated reviews over the last few years because I feel like that's where he really shines.

+Master Markus I don't think Phelos being more enjoyable is linked so much with him getting better, and he is of course, but rather I actually think it is BECAUSE he is getting away from horror movies. If you rewatch his Hostel reviews he slowly gets more and more bitter and the reviews get less and less enjoyable to sit through. He is much better when he is clearly enjoying himself.
