Thanks Leonard! Yeah I actually ordered a good working tcase from eBay. I’m still waiting on it to be delivered but I think that’ll be the easiest option. Buying a new case and transferring the insides definitely would have been cheapest but I just want to get this baby on the road! And I heard I’d need a press to do the swap. I may sell my old Dana just in case someone else wants to take that project on
@Nick Downer you should be able to find one that lines up with the supports on the back of the tailgate. You will probably have to drill out bolt holes for it
Nick, where did you get your tailgate panel? The tub I'm looking to get and rebuild for my project is going to need a new tailgate. After watching your video I think it would be best to just replace it like you did rather than waste time repairing it. Thanks
Ooo! Are you wanting a functioning tailgate that flips down? Or just a solid tail section? Check out classic Enterprises if you want the solid section like I have, I think they make a reproduction you don't have to modify like I did. Thanks for watching Harold! Good luck on the tub! Did you find a used one?
@@NickDowner Yeah going with a solid panel. The tub i'm looking at is a solid panel from the factory. Not doing a functioning tailgate. I'll check out classic enterprises. What year range did you look in for yours? The tub I'm looking at is a '76. It is located in Oklahoma and I'm in Pennsylvania. Just getting lots of pics to be sure it is worth the price, shipping , and needed repairs before purchasing. How did your transfer case go? I'm also done with rebuilding mine. Just waiting on some input shaft shims. It was definitely in need of a rebuild but whoever rebuilt it last had the endplay on the input and output shafts WAY out of spec.
So my tub was good to go... I believe its the tub my Jeep came with (a 1981). The tail panel I fabbed in was: Omix-Ada 12005.04.... It honestly worked out really well, just a bit tricky getting that lip bent over. That's awesome to hear about your T case! I ended up ordering a replacement off ebay to speed up the restoration in general. I didn't want to spend a couple of days re-building it at this point 🙂 I'm still waiting on it to get here though. Do you have a CJ5? or CJ7?
@@NickDowner MINE IS A 1979 CJ5. Has a 304 V-8 with a T176 4spd and dana 300. The trans and transfer case are not original. Original would of been a 3 spd and a Dana 20. My frame was tweaked pretty badly from plow use, so Ifound a decent one from a 1983 CJ5.
Just a suggestion don't know if your already planning on it but I think you should open up both the front and rear axle differential and just check the gears, seals and replace the gear oil. It's looking amazing
Thanks!! I appreciate it! Yeah that’s on the list for sure. I’ll probably get it back together, fill up all the fluids, drive it a bit, and then tackle the differentials. They definitely leak And need pinion seals :) I’ll probably buy and paint new covers too…. The current ones are dented too. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@NickDowner do you know what kind of axels those are? Are they Dana's or something else. I don't remember when jeep started useing Dana's for the wranglers.
Very good job with that tailgate.
Finally someone showing some work done on the old solid back panel. Thank you!
Looking good Nick!
Thanks Jim! I appreciate it!
You learn well , excellent job .
Thank you! It's been a wild ride but it's coming out well I think :)
So great Nick... Looking awesome😁
Thanks!
Excellent job Nick. Looks gread.👍
Thanks Francisco!!
Your dad is like the Chuck Norris of repair work. Probably invented cotterpins on accident on his way to work one day.
Great video 👍👍
Great job Nick. I especially liked when you had to flick that hot smoking piece of slag off your shoulder.
🤣 I heard that sizzling on my shoulder haha
Love your embarrassed dad walking away from your original cotter pin job 😂
It was so nasty looking 🤣
It looks like it's coming together Nick, have you figured out about what you are going to do for your transfer case

Looks great, did you get a spare mount with your tailgate?
I didn't yet! That's a great reminder. I'll look into that online..... Are they difficult to mount?
@Nick Downer you should be able to find one that lines up with the supports on the back of the tailgate. You will probably have to drill out bolt holes for it
Oh ok sounds easy enough. Thanks!!
