    This is pretty cool coverage, well done CBC! I made exactly the same choice several years ago after having 3 bikes stolen in Vancouver (including an expensive e-bike) and bought an electric longboard to commute into downtown with, you can carry a PEV into your office and put it under your desk. Recently switched to wheels too, with my first bought from Tom and my second from eevees, they are indeed a ton of fun once you have learnt to ride, very compact, nimble, quiet, they don't get in peoples way making it easy to share the road. I've had less scrapes on the e-wheel than I had on the e-skate.

  • @amdinga561
    @amdinga561 2 года назад +33

    There is a revolution happening right now for PEVs (personal electronic vehicles). Thank you for covering this with an open mind, a lot of the initial reaction to these devices is simply "they go fast, ban ban ban!".
    Each of these devices is one less car on the road, something we desperately need both for emissions control and general traffic. These allow people to get around their cities with new levels of convenience and fun, and traversing a city with a single person transport or on foot is totally different from using a car. If you want to reconnect alienated people to their community, we'll need more rideable/walkable cities. We'll need to stop designing around cars. I hope that people give these a chance instead of banning them because the lasting positive impact for everyone in the city would be enormous. These are the future, please don't kill them with reactionary bans.

    • @amdinga561
      @amdinga561 2 года назад +5

      @@saicharan6013 Currently the absolute top end, most expensive wheels can push 55mph tops. Maybe some idiot is taking their wheel on the highway, but there will always been that one guy in any sport/hobby who does stupid things. In general, people who ride EUCs in traffic are forced to do so because of the lack of alternative infrastructure like bike lanes. It isn't our fault that so many cities are built around cars.
      And yeah, you're driving a 2,000-4,000 pound block of metal. If you hit anyone they're going to be injured or dead. Another reason why we should be supporting single person transportation like EUCs/scooters/bicycles over cars. One of many reasons.

I would not care if it even requires some form of agility course to proof street readiness in extreme situations and possibility to loose it for wreckless driving. This would make much more sense than just giving certificates to some e-scooters whilst the driver take traffic rules veery liberal.

      Even the Netherlands has banned them which are supposed to be at the forefront for small personal vehicles and new ways of thinking. So I don't think it's because of the car industry (although they aren't helping), it's more the authoritarian nanny behavior in general where everything that is new, provides freedom, and that looks dangerous gets banned. For member states of the European Union it's even worse since the EU can from the blue push for a bill to have them either banned or hopelessly restricted for all members, and once it has passed, good luck removing it.

    I have no issue with people using these machines. But as a pedestrian I do have concerns about how many trails around the city now have people travelling very fast down them and then cursing at me if I don't leap out of their way. Some of these bikes and unicycles can do upwards of 70-80 km/h. Electric bikes and unicycles exist in a kind of bylaw grey zone and people who choose to get around using their actual feet seem to be forgotten. As a city we need to do better to encourage the mundane activity of walking. I know it's boring, but it's tried and true. Personally, I think e-bike users who own machines capable of travelling over 40 km/h should have to buy some sort of cheap collision insurance.

    • @Nemonurwingy
      @Nemonurwingy 2 года назад +6

      They should enforce bike lane speed limits. I agree with you that someone going faster than 20 mph in mixed pedestrian and non-motorized traffic is being irresponsible and should face sanction (that goes for manual bikers trying to Tour de France it, also). For faster travel, they should open up the roads to them. I agree that for vehicles above a certain capability, there should be registration and insurance requirements. I hope we get there, rather than freak out over new things and try to restrict.

Look - great looks, after 6 weeks of bashing Weight - it's really all tire, but as I fall I can easily grab the seat so it doesn't slam the ground. Size - Very adjustable. I'm 6', 33" inseam. I put it mostly up, but could go a bit higher if I needed to. The Bad: Not sure if it's out of the norm, but seat got scraped up quickly. Pedals - they are a bit uncomfortable and I can't get the right feel on my feet. But, they are solid and haven't been damaged at all as I've seen in reviews on other cycle's.- To address one comment about the seat connection not straight. Huh? Seat is on a round pole, you just turn it and it's straight. Either of the bad I expected to replace once I improved. I'd recommend to anyone else in the learning phase.
