I have to warn you that I have no formal automotive training, and have just learned by breaking stuff. If you can learn anything from my mistakes then great, but you do so at your own risk!
Ok guys done this a number of times now and have these suggestions to open the locked door. Remove the door card as shown then push the long silver horizontal rod towards the door lock and open the door with the outside handle at the same time. The long rod is connected to the White plastic lock mechanism that Larcs was trying to lever up to release the door lock.

will I be able to open/lock the door from inside(with door panel on) after opening it one time after now being perma-locked? Or is lock change mandatory? It seems to crazy for me to remove the window and all... maybe rather leave it locked because I dont use it much... On my front door it does not unlock via central locking but I can unlock it manually when pulling lever... hope to do that with rear as well.. such a nightmare
@@ArneRadelj Normally it's a one time deal just to get it open to replace the lock.
@@ArneRadeljIt’s an Mot failure unfortunately. Happened to me last week.
@@ArneRadeljIf you can not open it from the inside as well, you have to drill a hole on the door where the deadlock arm is and unscrew it. There are a few threads with info about it, theyre hard to find though and youtube will delete this if i link them.
I was 2 minutes away from scrapping my golf 4 for a deadlocked door, I will try the drill and unscrew method tomorrow as a last ditch effort. I will probably forget to post an update so comment if you want one.
I've got exactly the same spec car as yours (PD130 Sport Estate in Reflex silver) with exactly the same door not opening so a very appropriate video for me, thanks 🙂 I did the drivers front a couple of years ago. Got the new lock for the rear but haven't bothered as yet. Am sure your guide will help. Locks are rubbish on these aren't they ? I had to replace actuator in the tailgate when I bought it as it'd only open with the key.

Good job Larcs. Unfortunately, I only saw your video today. I almost broke my door yesterday. I drilled several holes and removed a piece of sheet metal to unlock the lock. Looks a bit brutal now...but the door opens again. Your method is very elegant. 😀

You've done better than me Larcs. I've been following a few RUclips vlogs, most recently a South African fella, who drilled two holes south & southeast of that hole, to expose the grey piece you've been looking at. I'm still not there! It just isn't shifting. Maybe somehow the child lock went on -what then? I was told this was an MOT failure, so found another garage. But it's been 3yrs now! Luckily nobody ever sits in the back, but I may have to take this to a VW garage. My Golf GT is the same age/engine - you get attached to them don't you lol.

I also couldn't open the door but ruther than drill and cut I put a s c rewdriver from the outside carefully past the door seal to where the lock striker presing towards the door and pulling on the internal oppening chord and it opened.

i can recommend febi bilstein branded lock modules for vag cars, they have a improved microswitch for the doorlatch and are pre-greased
i installed a crappy lock module for 50€ 3 months ago and it already failed: thinks driver door is always open so i cant lock the doors
the module wasnt even put together correctly, like the melted plastic that was supposed to keep it together wasnt even attached on two of the points :D
the febi modules cost 30€

My one started on driverside passenger door lock and over the space of 3 yrs I ended up replacing all 4 locks. Now my Hach lock is not accepting the key but the electric is all locking and working. Just saying you will have to do the other 3 doors for sure in the next 5yrs...lol. Its a pain, but the gurage wants £300 per door to do... What a rip off.

What a nightmare! I've managed to get the panel off, but could not get the door to open. And after wathing the rest of the video, this stuck door goes to a local garage, as I don't have a day or two to mess with it.
I'm sorry to hear that. I think I was lucky.
In my case same issue w. the RR doorlock, however it is unclear where is the problem. In my case push the lock hinge and pull the latch did not worked. I've tried for almost two hours.
However I have tried several times to open the door puling outside handle and suddenly lockhinge was not stucked in the lock podition anymore and I was able to move with him. Maybe the combination of moved helped to get end position for electric actuating of motor inside the lock.
At least you got it sorted 👍. Could have been anything, change in temperature, vibration etc? Some people get away with just banging on the door and it goes. Who knows?

Im wondering what that plastic blade screw on the side ( and appears to be directly accessible via the hole in the door ) does? its not an unlock is it? One can see why this costs a fortune to get done at a garage.
I think that must be the child lock. Yes it can be very time consuming to get open.

Hi Larcs, could I ask what type of silicon do you use to such repairs?
If you mean on the regulator panel to door seal, I just used a household clear silicon.
Hi, I have had to do the same on my wife's car but in the process, the spindle and wire for the window came off and now I have no idea how it goes back on, any suggestions?
Sorry, not sure what you mean. If the cable has come off the drum, all you can do is try to wind it all back on.

@@flamurzhitia7007 . Sometimes the guides on the rails that move the window up and down break causing problems. The cables also sometimes times get twisted up and damaged in the pulley, this can cause issues.

I did the same as you did and put a screwdriver in and then the plastic broke. Is there a solution perhaps??

There isn't really a lot of adjustment. Just where the glass meets the window regulator. Maybe try lubricating the guides?
I have a similar problem, two doors don’t lock when I activate the key lock button.

Why not just take off the door skin after ypu get the door open to change the lock mech ?
The door skins on the MK4 are welded/folded/bonded IIRC so not really an option?

I've had both my front door central locking modules replaced (by mechanic friends) now my rear drivers one is starting to play up...where did you get the new module from and how much?

Thanks..today my rear drivers door lock has totally stopped working..was working everyother click so wasn't too bad..but today not opening at all..i doubt i could do it myself looks far too complex..help!!
I had new clutch kit fitted this weekend plus new timing belts tensioners pulleys aux belt water pump..loadsa money..timing belt kit was last done 5 years ago..they didnt look too bad tbh..look like they could of done another year atleast

I think it was just a screwdriver IIRC. I was very lucky.
