    When you see the almost obscene amount of fresh fruit and vegetables on display there and considering there will a fair percentage of looking-only tourists the amount that must get wasted and thrown away would be mind boggling 😱

    • @RealLifeFruitopia
      @RealLifeFruitopia  7 месяцев назад +2

      The sellers are almost exclusively Asian, wasting nothing at all. Whatever expired fruit remains unsold is packed into boxes at closing time on Sunday for a few dollars. Not even mouldy fruit is given away!!

    In the Newcastle area they've forecasted a top of 27°C so it's not too chilly today in my area !

      April weather in Melbourne isn't too bad, infact it's what most around the world would feel is ideal, 18-24C. I just needed a break after 6 months of babysitting plants in the garden.

      Absolutely. Inflation is everywhere. No way to escape it completely and the powers that be want to keep it that way. People think they are getting richer when the opposite is true. I like eating food from my own garden because I can forget about thia stuff at least a while that is until I have to go and buy a roll of poly pipe or a tank of diesel or something.

    George, yeah Rustys its difficult to fathom the prices was there in February I was expecting to be a huge array of fruit as Tropical North QLD calendar states for Late Summer and only 1/4 of fruits were available most probably due to the floods a week before. so I only walked away with the Yellow, Red, Fluro Dragon Fruits and a Sour Sop I have to warn people before buying a Sour sop it ripens unexpectedly like the Black Sapote I had to eat at Cairns Airport before getting on the plane, I was a sticky mess as it was ripening so quick it would never survive the flight back to Sydney. I think now allot of IGAs and independents have caughten on the Dragon Fruit bandwagon and are selling locally grown ones i got 3 Red, White and Yellow for $3 each the other day. i think i was going to buy a fruit from Rustys on your visit going by your video last time I looked in Woolworths Town Hall Station Sydney the Durian was $21 a kilo I think to make the trip to Cairns that much special i would of brought the Durian and maybe a late harvest Mango and blended it up as smoothie at the Apartments at least its locally grown and not from Thailand like the Woolies one. Cheers for the tour.

    • @RealLifeFruitopia
      @RealLifeFruitopia  7 месяцев назад +1

      Every year since our first visit, we are given a different excuse for the exorbitant prices on rare fruit. it's been too wet, too dry, or a shortage of pickers. Mind you, the prices for regular fruit are fine, which is what we mostly purchase. I'm yet to taste an Australian grown durian after 30 trips to Cairns!! I dont care how good it is, I'm not paying $50-$100 for a single fruit.

    Where are you guys from? How do you rate the durian here? My wife and I have only just started liking durian very recently. My wife was utterly repulsed by it a couple years ago when we first tried it. Then last year she still didn’t like it. But this year, she slowly started changing her mind after two weeks. Then about the 3rd week I bought them, she totally changed. ‘Holy shit’ she said, ‘this is f*ckiing incredible’ 😂 I said yep. I knew you’d come round!
