Your a Legend John, I can't believe I'm playing thus riff. You made it so easy to understand that a begginer like me is playing. Thank for helping make a part of my dreams come true, your a rock star 🍻
It sure is! Im a huge blues fan and intermediate guitarist and I've always loved John Lee and his tunes are fun to play. I use what I call the "John Lee Shuffle" a lot and its just fun to play and try to add some John Lee style licks in there as well as maybe one or two of my own. Thanks again!
You are very welcome . It is a parts guitar a 57 Japanese reissue neck with body and pickups by...... I can’t remember. I really like the mini humbuckers.
I've played this a lot of different ways over the years, but man this is so pure and true to JLH, and you're a great teacher, John. This is it for me, I will burn this one into my fingertips and deviate very little if at all, this one has the mojo. Thank you sir, you are a master.
Been trying to learn more blues riffs and songs. Great tutorial and feels awesome to play. Now I know where David Gilmour got his inspiration for his Wish you were here solo
Thank you for sharing. I've wanted to play this simple tune for years but just looked it up and found your video. It clicked with me and your tutorial was successful :D
In the first measure riff I have seen and like a slide from the G 4th fret down to the 2nd fret...sounds good. Like the video..learning this song in bits and pieces.
This was a parts guitar put together by s local repairman. I was skeptical until I tried it. These are mini humbuckers, so you still get a lot of that glassy top end that normal humbuckers don’t have. I’m a big fan of the strat and tele single coil pickups as well.
Great lesson, iI have watched quite a few people teach this riff and everyone teaches you play it with that little slide bit. I have watched quite a few Hooker vids of him playing this song live and never once does he slide and seems to play the riff on each note. Maybe that's what it seems to me in these live vids and I might be wrong. Thank you.
Yes, I’ve never seen him do the slide either. This is from the single and it sounds like a slide, but he could be bending or just slurring his notes together so it sounds like a slide. Hooker had a very loose style.
HELP HELP HELP...... hi there, it’s me again, I was just dropping in because I really need a HUGE favour. My papa died in April and he was a guitarist his entire life in the 50s and 60s he played with many bands across Canada and the US... he always wanted me to learn guitar and taught me really good music, like Ace Cannon Green Onions in particular, and the house of the rising sun, before he died he was telling me I should try to learn, when I was a kid I’d always sneak in his room and try to play his guitar he’d come home and know it was out of tune haha. I was heavy into baseball then and always thought guitar to be to hard but now I’m older and I’m really wanting to learn, I uploaded some videos on my Page of me attempting some stuff but I still suck, but I AM DYING to learn this solo in Ace Cannon Green onions.... it starts at 1:15 in the song, I have a memorie of my papa playing it and I really want to learn very badly, if you could help me out I would be so privileged and thankful and appreciative. I will post a link here to the song..... ruclips.net/video/QFURJ9s-qw0/видео.html hope to hear back soon thank you Kindly for you’re time :)
Hi Richard, I’m glad you are trying to learn, but I may not be able to help you as much as you’d like. Contact me at johncurtisstudio@gmail.com. I’ve got some questions for you. Once I have the answers I’ll see if I can get you going. Keep rockin!
This was good. The only difference I see when John Hooker plays it is that he plays the single notes louder and the chords much softer with less notes (three?).
Yes, John Lee is very loose. I’ve heard many versions of him doing this and no two are the same. This is based on the single version. It’s hard to teach his style online, but this will at least give the basic structure of the licks and the tune. Thanks for tuning in.
It’s a parts guitar. Fender Japanese 62 reissue neck, Chandler body and pickups. These are mini humbuckers. They are quiet but have the sweet high end the regular humbuckers lack.
That was really helpful, thanks. Would you mind sharing what amp you’re playing through and how you are recording that? The guitar and your voice sound great.
You’re welcome. I’m playing through a cheap solid state Dean Markley amp. I recorded it on my iPad. No external mic or camera. The pickups really give it the tone. They are mini humbuckers, not the standard strat pickups.
@@jcurtis30water thank you for the video and demonstration, really great ! if it's not too late, can you please share what kind of effect did you use ? I am always struggling to find the "correct" effect when I try to play something ... many thanks in advance !
John I just found you on a mandolin tutorial. I recently picked one up in Vietnam on guitar street. I saw the name and said to myself “is that the PDB guy ? It has to be.” I also heard a little chowdah in the voice so I said it must be. Last time I saw you play was at Cape Nedick Lobster pound in Maine in like 1985 or something. I’m now living in Honduras and self teaching mandolin as a guitar player for 30+ years. I’m recently a scuba instructor as well. I remember you did a Jacques Cousteau song back in the day. What was the name of the song ? I’m glad you’re still at it. If I’m through Newburyport any time soon. I’ll swing by and say hello. Any suggestions for on line mando lessons ? People this guy is legit !
Wow, the Lobster Pound! The song is called Jacques Cousteau ( shocker!) I have several mandolin tutorials, check them out to see if they help. Banjo Ben does some mando on RUclips as well. Just cruise around and see what works. Definitely give me a shout if you are in the neighborhood. I’m hopeful we all won’t still be locked down! Hope you are well and thanks again for the shoutout!
Depending on the version you listen to. On some, you're right. He hangs around the 1 even when the band goes to the changes! But he could make it work.
Hey mate I have a question about the filler section in the record where he just kind of groves out. Is he just playing like and 12 bar blues in that spot is some kind of finger style or something. I'm a little lost as to what he does. I have watched a few live versions and I'm not sure how he does it?
The “filler “ part of Boom Boom is somewhat loose, to say the least. Some of the band is switching to other chords, some are not. John Lee is playing simple open riffs similar to the riffs in the first part of the song. They bring it down and the original riff comes back. They go back to the 12 bar pattern then. Every version of this tune by John Lee is different. Artistic license?😎
Your a Legend John, I can't believe I'm playing thus riff. You made it so easy to understand that a begginer like me is playing. Thank for helping make a part of my dreams come true, your a rock star 🍻
I’m blushing! Glad it’s helpful for you,
Rock on!
I love the simple nature of the song yet it sounds so good all together!
I agree, it just sounds so natural.
Absolutely amazing and easy to understand with you’re explaining
Thanks, always dug this tune!

That's an unusual and spiffing Stratocaster you have There, Sir. Thanks for the lesson ✌
You are very welcome . It is a parts guitar a 57 Japanese reissue neck with body and pickups by...... I can’t remember. I really like the mini humbuckers.
The word "spiffing " i feel is most underused today . Lets make "spiffing" great again .

Thank you my friend. I think John Lee never played this the same way twice. When I heard it, I had to learn it!
Thank you so much, this helped a lot🙌🏼
And I really enjoyed hearing you play!
You are very welcome and thank you.
Good lesson on great riffage. And nice-looking pick guard.
Thank you kindly! One of my personal favorites.
Great video!! One of my all time fave bluesmen and lick! Rip John Lee Hooker

I still have fun with this!
Great lesson thanks for braking down the tab I am a beginner so need the detail you provided thanks again
Glad it was helpful!
Thank for the lesson! Cheers from Portugal
Abrigado Pedro
From the looks of that fretboard, I would guess you have had that guitar since you were about 16 years old
I wish.
I'm going to guess a relic custom shop
it is relic
I’ve got the same maple neck on my telecaster and it’s starting to do that after about five years. I don’t clean it much though.

I can see swapping out the bridge pick up for a hummbucket but all 3. Strat pick ups are what make the great.

In my opinion the only thing that you need is a tablature, nice video!!
Thanks, no tab as of now, sorry.
try without, it is more effort, but it will stick in your brain and finger better. Someone says "tabs are for idiots" ....

What a beautiful guitar and an amazing lesson.
Thank you!
nice tone but then it is a fake Strat....

Nice groove
Appreciate it!
great, thanks
Tab?
I have a tab for this, but I do charge $10 for my tabs. If you’re still interested, contact me at: johncurtisstudio@gmail.com. Thanks.
Does this song follow the typical 12 barre blues progression? Great lesson btw
Yes, but bar 1 starts after the opening lick. So the opening lick is actually the 12th bar. Confused?
I listen to a version of this featuring ZZ top and the intro seems different to how this sounds
Yes, I’ve heard this played 100 different ways. This is just my interpretation of one of John Lee Hooker’s earlier versions.
What is that guitar model and pickups?
It’s a parts guitar, 57 reissue neck, chandler body and pickups.
They are mini- humbuckers.
2º riff 3:58. 3º riff 5:34.
damn i cut my finger with that slide xd
Playing the blues can be dangerous 👹

E7

Mini humbuckers, these are from Chandler
Isn't there a fancy bit he plays with trills as well as this though?
Yes, he adds a few riffs between his vocal lines and at the end.
👍👍

Sounds like Green Onions by Booker T & the MG's
It does, this tune came about 10 years before that. It’s a riff, progression that dates back to the delta blues musicians in the 30s.
@@jcurtis30water dad loved to play Green Onions. I'd back up on rhythm. Great song no matter what the name. 😎🤘

Just the way I play it. I don’t think Hooker slides into the first note, just like the way it sounds.
