I attended a screening of that MOMA restoration of MMISL back in '89/'90 and at 30 years of age I finally discovered what 3 strip Technicolor really looked like. I realized that THIS was what my parents enjoyed in their youthful moviegoing days and felt a little envious.

I don't know if it's the same thing (3-strip), but I think the most amazing colour I have seen on the big screen was when "The Trouble with Harry" was re-released by the Hitchcock Estate and were a feature of the Melbourne Film Festival in 1984. The autumn colours in that movie are eye-popping.

@@BabyFaceBren I don't know for certain but I believe by the mid-fifties even though Technicolor was still three strip the process had been improved to be less time-consuming. I'm sure that the decision to film the movie on location in Vermont, a state well known for its Fall Foliage, helped.

If it wasn’t for turner we wouldn’t have half these classes movies now.

This was fascinating! Meet Me in St. Louis is one of my favorite films, and it's nice to know that it's been preserved for posterity. I vaguely remember one of these filler segments, and it was talking about the preservation of the movie soundtracks and the releases on Rhino Records (I distinctly remember them talking about the terrible condition the tapes for Bernard Hermann's score for North by Northwest were in). Do you happen to have that segment anywhere?

I remember seeing it too, but sorry, I didn't record it.

1:18, How could MGM almost dump their color films into the ocean?! Geez, even in death, MGM still had one more way to humiliate poor Judy Garland.

Yeah, poor Judy Garland. Used and abused by the studio system.

I remember this documentary from years ago! It was utterly fascinating - it opens in an abandoned film vault in Hollywood. Do you happened to know the name of the documentary?

Too bad that this video is with such poor quality. You can't really see the difference between unrestored and restored. 35 mm acetate prints in the 1970's were much better than any of the video they show in this little documentary.

You can't see the difference? Maybe you just need to clean your spectacles.
