This theme brings back memories of my mother doing the family ironing in the basement watching Wagon Train on a table-top second-hand black and white tv. Golly! that was a long time ago. I'm older now than she was then! Time flys!
@@scottmiller6495 : I came here because I thought the "Wagon train" theme sounded familiar to _The Big Country_ and I wanted to check it out -- I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that they were both written by the same guy! (Classic _"Ha! Well, whaddaya know?"_ moment!)
There was a song before this one. This is the third one for that series. The first one was very beautiful. Started out with a harmonica. The lyrics went "Dawn lent it's Paintbrush to the Plains". I have it on an old record somewhere.
This was a pretty theme song that reached the deep recesses of my brain since I was a real little kid when I first heard it. Excellent job with the compilation.
John McIntire was a veteran character actor who credits included Hitchcock's PSYCHO. Robert Fuller's credits included the TV series EMERGENCY! and LARAMIE.
The show is good and love the music....why can’t they bring it back if we flooded them with letters...here, in San Antonio, it plays on channel 81 metv (old shows) they are just as enjoyable as they were growing up...
Most people, especially my age, only know about Wagon Train through Gene Roddenberry pitching Star Trek as "a Wagon Train to the stars", and that's unfortunate, it's a pretty good show. I'm lucky to have seen some episodes in reruns.
4 years late I realize. But as a Trekkie I didn’t even know this. I knew of Wagon train because it was always on TV when I’d get home from school. And, here’s the good news, I was born in 04 and thanks to MeTV I was able to watch tons of older classic TV shows. I still do from time to time when I have the time though less so now in college.
@@jeffreyr4560 That's cool! I'm older than you (born in 1993, I'm going to be officially old AKA turning 30 in December) but I love these shows my parents and grandparents watched. I remember when I found out about Star Trek's "Wagon Train" inspiration and that "wagon train to the stars" wasn't entirely metaphorical I thought that was the coolest thing ever, that encouraged me to really watch Wagon Train.
I've never seen this series play on any channel with Robert Fuller and I've watched westerns since 1975 when I was 3, well, of course, all of them reruns.
A very good western series from long ago. It stands in fourth place behind Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and The Big Valley and a close fifth would be The Rifleman !!!!!
, One thing always bugged me about The Rifleman. He didn't aim! Lucas McCain shot his Winchester rifle from the hip! That's not the way to shoot a rifle. Accurately, anyway.
Let's update the greatest Western television series list: There are 6 major shows and in this order: Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Virginian, The Big Valley, Wagon Train and The Rifleman!!!!!
High Chaparral. David Dortort (the creator of Bonanza) used the same producers, directors, and writers during the shows three season run. David Rose (Bonanza theme composer) was enlisted to compose the iconic theme song.
Actually this theme music was used in a 1959 movie called The Jayhawkers with Fess Parker and Jeff Chandler.I was surprised to hear it when i saw the movie on the "late late show"...
@SenorZorrozzz Actually, the show was on for more years without Ward Bond, than with him. He died in the middle of the 4th season (136 episodes) and was replaced by John McIntire for the remainder of the show which was 144 episodes.
these old western epics seem to have Bud Westmore (makeup), a famous Hollywood makeup name, and Denver Pyle as a supporting player as a recurring theme.
It really bothers me how much the actors are all yanking unnecessarily on the reins. It makes the horses toss their heads and dance around, which I guess looks more "exciting," but it sure makes it clear that the actors (or the directors) are not very good equestrians.
Great show, if historically inaccurate. The Conestoga wagons of the day were bigger and bulkier and weren’t drawn by horses but by ox teams. Let’s face it. The amount of supplies in those wagons wouldn’t be enough to sustain over a long weekend, let alone the 7 month trip from Missouri to Oregon.
Conestoga wagons were originally indeed pulled by teams of 6 horses here in Pennsylvania. The horses were sold in Missouri and oxen were purchased. They hunted game along the way as well.
This is the worst theme for a western tv show for me. Not catchy enough to get me hooked. I mean Bonanza will always be number one, other greats include Rawhide, High Chaparral, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger and The Virginian.

Memories of my youth...
And I'm still watching it each afternoon in 2024...
Classic 🪶✨
As a kid I loved Wagon Train. The theme song still gives me goose bumps.
Its marvelous because Jerome Moross wrote it he,s the writer of The Big Country theme !!!!

I was born in 1978. I love this classic show! I love the beautiful opening and closing them music! Thank you for posting and sharing this!

God Bless Carl Lee Hubbard, R.I.P. Chief
I love Wagon Train.

Yes, the one I usually hear at the end of the black and white episodes is extremely schmaltzy.
Wagon Train always reminds me the first time I saw it in 1970

It comes on every day M-F on the western channel on Showtime-Encore Western Channel
@@vincentcardilloiv2256 It's still on in reruns on ME -TV here in Cincinnati, OH. I just recently discovered it.

I would have never heard of it if it wasn't for that story. I am an 80s kid.
Having never seen Wagon Train for 50 years of my life I had no idea what that meant.

Bill hawks is my favorite
Charlie Wooster the cook was my favorite character actor
They always made fun of his cooking but I know they like it.they love playing games with him,but they seem to forget he played games with them too!
You mean the late great Frank McGrath!!!!!
yes, indeedy, every time Charlie the cook comes on I get a big grin on my face. He was priceless.
Thank you Google!
Wasn’t the same without Ward Bond & Robert Horton
A very good western series from long ago. It stands in fourth place behind Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and The Big Valley and a close fifth would be The Rifleman !!!!!
All of those Westerns I grew up watching in reruns on Pat Robertson's CBN/The Family Channel and later The Hallmark Channel
, One thing always bugged me about The Rifleman. He didn't aim!
Lucas McCain shot his Winchester rifle from the hip!

Scratchin' my head. This sounds different www.youtube.com/watch?
v=YLqEYWHAmyg&t=34s to me... used later in WT?
Wagon trains and wagon trails , where were they situated in vast western prairies and mountains?
The Santa Fe Trail runs right through Shawnee, KS, just west of KC, MO.
i wish they would have kept the the second theme by johny oneill vocal as the closing theme song
Ward band died and so did the ratings. The network did everything it could to keep it going but it didn’t work.
@SenorZorrozzz Actually, the show was on for more years without Ward Bond, than with him. He died in the middle of the 4th season (136 episodes) and was replaced by John McIntire for the remainder of the show which was 144 episodes.
Interestingly, one of Gene Roddenberry's early working titles for his outer space science fiction show was "Wagon Train to the Stars."

Prairie Schooner vs Conestoga wagon
Conestoga wagons were originally indeed pulled by teams of 6 horses here in Pennsylvania. The horses were sold in Missouri and oxen were purchased. They hunted game along the way as well.
Theme Song/End Credits

Same music score as Laramie almost!
