    I think Johnny T has gotta come off the first power play unit. Might be better to have Matty Knies as a net front presence. The power play is anemic

    • @darcys842
      @darcys842 2 дня назад +7

      I definitely do agree the powerplay needs to change, but idk if Tavares being moved is the choice. For one, his main problem is speed, which considering on pp he sits in front of the net and screens isn't a major problem. The second is that he's the center, if you put knies in then matthews has to take the face off, and that means he can't be setup off the face off. It's not always what they do but more often then not on the pp when they win it back to matthews on the one timer it goes in. I think personally they need to just fully change it up, put marner and Nylander on 2nd pp, give robertson and mcmann some time on pp1, see if it works. If it don't, try something else. Its the start of the season, but we need to figure this out sooner rather than later so we don't got 1/30 or whatever it was again

      @@darcys842 Might be a good call to spread the core 4 out between the units... PP2 unit is nothing but total scraps. just an absolute hodge podge of players

      @darcys842 2 дня назад +1

      @@Outta-hz1ej honestly. Like I love the talent we have for depth scoring, but it feels like the powerplay is set specifically for the pp1 guys, so when the pp2 guys come they try to do the same thing but they don't have the tools or chemistry to do anything. We should either split the pp1 and make it so we have two equally good pps or we need to get specific set plays that the pp2 guys can consistently do. Either way it needs work and I'm hoping berube can do it

      @@darcys842
      JT's decline correlates with the PP's decline in the last 2 years tbh. His speed is a huge issue on entries because for some reason they insist on passing it to him at the blue line. Before he could at least win board battles and let the team set up, that's going with age.
      The second biggest issue for me is you have three guys (16, 34, 88) who want to play on the wall, so nobody wants to play the bumper position which messes up the structure.
      With the 1-3-1 you have clear passing options, while for the Leafs it seems to be just move around and hope a 40-goal scorer gets open for a one-timer

    • @darcys842
      @darcys842 2 дня назад

      @@stevendchu all your points are fair, but still I think that just means they need to change how they go about the pp, hes the best face off taker we got which is the main reason hes still on the pp1. If u take him off of pp1 you either need to put someone else who can take face off in, in which case they will always be worse then Tavares is, or you have matthews do it meaning he won't be able to get the immediate one timers that when they happen work pretty well. Which is why I suggest just splitting up the pp1, they are already experimenting with having rielly on pp2 so why not try having Nylander on pp2 and have robertson or mcmann in his spot, both of them can win board battles and play bumper, and it allows Nylander to fill the much needed role of having a star on pp2. Alternatively you can have marner on pp2 who pretty much fills the same role. Idk who exactly would replace him, of course mcmann or knies would be good, but I could see domi taking it too, since they both are playmakers. Anyways, what I'm getting at is there is more than just replacing Tavares that could get the pp going, and I think just getting him on pp2 and calling it a day would do more harm than good

    7:54 It’s because we’re the Ducks. We’re so laughably low tier (read as: still rebuilding) that winning a game (or winning during a game) is monumental.
    I was at that game you mentioned. We won 4-3 in overtime and you did the one-shot wearing black because “at funerals, we wear black.” It was the LFR with the color clip. “It could be black, it could be blue, it could be green, it could be purple~”

    If they're playing the same way they did under the last coach, which is to say they refuse to get out in front and take a goalie's eyes away, they're never gonna win anything as a group. It's almost like the team needs more than a fancy new coach to consistently beat top teams. It's almost like they need a new identity on the roster as a whole, something the previous GM was gonna try and do but got fired before he could do by a guy above him that lacks the heart in the front office that he had as a player and a head of Player Safety. We'll see if Berube gets them to start playing like they should, but this is exactly what I figured would happen with virtually the same roster as last year.

      Yep. 3on 1, if the player with the puck is on the wing he needs to shoot to the far corner of the net and if it doesn’t go in, let the other 2 drive the net for a rebound. Passing in that situation almost always gets broken up by the defenseman.

    The comment Steve made about Holmberg…..”if you don’t keep goals out and you don’t score that’s not good”. A once famous coach on HNIC had the best saying on this “If you don’t score , or you don’t hit , or you don’t fight ….What the hell are you doing out there?!” Side note: On the Rangers first goal where the puck hit the ref….Is it just me or are the Refs getting in the way a lot? Not only getting hit by the puck but getting caught in the middle of the play. Remember the good old days where Ron Finn would climb the boards six feet in the air hanging on top of the glass…..I know they can’t do that now the way the boards/glass are designed…..

    If that third line is going to work, Tavares needs wings that can hold the puck. He's the only scoring threat on the line, which means Robertson has to sit. The dude can not hold onto the puck. He's either bumped off or he loses it in his feet. He couldn't stick handle his way out of an empty rink. Tavares is ALWAYS a threat to score in front if his wingers get him the puck.

      @@saskk2290 Not saying Matthews effort isn't fine, just saying I doubt he's the captain the Leafs need right now. I'm not in that dressing room so I don't know, maybe 34 has grown. But Nylander saying "F-----' shoot it. Stop f-----' cryin', bro. This is the f-----' issue. You guys f-----' b---- about s---. Let's f-----' go!" indicates to me that maybe pinning the C on the best player instead of the best captain is the wrong move. I honestly don't know who would be better tho. If Reaves played a bigger role in the ice I think he would be more in line with what's needed from a captain right now. Might be a hot take, it is what it is. Either way, I'm more hopeful for the Leafs than I've been in a long while.

    No worries - there is what about 120 games left in the season. Matthews will score 50+ goals, Nylander 40+ and Marner will have 100+ points and the Leafs will have 100+ points. There are no lessons early in the year - remember the Oilers last year. Not having a defence does not really matter in the regular season.

  • @Tav57

    This loss, which wasn’t as bad as the final score made it seem, was no big deal. Probably a good yardstick to measure the team by. The best goalie in hockey did a number on them, and they got flustered. Time to check in with that, re-boot themselves and go forward re-energized.
    As you pointed out, the first NYR goal was greatly assisted by the referee being out of position and blocking a good clearing attempt, and the team was playing well. But the more Igor denied them, the more they tried too hard, and screwed up.
    Good to get that out of the way, early. It won’t happen again under Berube.
