- State Rail Authority during the 1980s and 90s deployed a TV advertisement campaign focused on the modernisation of the Sydney Trains network, value for money and convenience when compared to personalised motor transport and safety utilising the New South Wales Crimestoppers hotline.

My favorite TV commercial was the "21st century starts on the 28th January 1988. The sounds is all so futuristic and I remember this ad as a kid everyone was talking about it in the playground at how cool the Tangara looked.

@@MichaelTavares Yeah I know what you mean. Those who were first to ride it in 1988 would then tell the rest of us in the play ground what they experience and everyone would hang off every word.
It's pretty weird that the Tangara existed for a number years alongside the Red sets (trains that were originally built in the 1920s). It meant taking a trip on the train in the late 80s and early 90s was a very diverse experience!

Back when Sydney actually had a train network to be proud of. Back when everyone was positive, forward thinking and future proofing. Nothing like today.
In 1988 I was in 5th grade, I took old red rattler to school in the morning and a new Tangara home in the arvo. 🙂

@@SydneyHistory Agreed about the contrast between those two trains - I felt the same way back then. But the original Tangaras weren't quiet. They squeaked and screeched when running. And then beeped every few seconds when the doors were open. The C sets were much quieter.

I wish I was born in a time like this, when Aussies were excited about building out major transport networks in this country.
How awesome would it be for a big marketing push to have rail and bus network across NSW, a world-class network that links regional NSW and Greater Sydney
Yep, it was a different time indeed. The XPT also came online in the early 80s. I think a high speed rail network linking major cities on the east coast would be awesome.
@@SydneyHistory I would support that if we had more regional connectivity to the major cities that will be hsr hubs with an updated XPT Explorer network across regional NSW to these new hsr and exisiting major suburban rail hubs in Greater Sydney
Yep, it would be so cool to see these sorts of ads on TV but currently the public reception of Sydney Trains is too tarnished to have a positive effect
It's always been a backward joke compared to other countries.
They were making ads like this in the 80s because the system was still in the decline phase and they were trying to encourage people to get back on trains.

Really enjoyed that, brought back some memories, the adverts must have worked, the trains are jammed packed on the western line during the peak!
Yeah western line is choca. Hopefully the nee western Sydney Metro will fix some of that in the 2030s.
@@SydneyHistory the tangara first model gave me so much good vibes, I was born 2010 and I remember riding the yellow tangara and now in 2022 all I see e these futuristic trains. Thanks for posting this
I'm a South Aussie, but I can remember the red/green double arrow... Mostly because of some graffiti...
Someone had realised the top (red) arrow looked like a capital "L" & the bottom (green) arrow looked like a "7"
so they sprayed a sign with *ate//days a week*
And the sign now read:
_Late_
_7 days a week_

Oh weren't they? I'm as nostalgic as anyone, but I prefer today when you have trains with space, air conditioning and proper suspension, and apps that tell you exactly where the next train is.

Yeah sorry about that. Went through a bit of an identity crisis, literally. I put them back up now.
One of the Sydney train also tested in Melbourne and operated after testing but it had problems entering the city loop and the Melbourne platforms are not meant to designs these trains so Melbourne tested it again but it felled so it got removed in Melbourne on 2002
Yeah I remember this it was one of the Tangaras. Probably a good thing at the end of the day. The single decks run faster.
It wasn't actually a Tangara. It was a 4D train. It was based on the Tangara design (a casual observer probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference) but was actually a different train, made to specification for the Melbourne train network.

They wrote up a contract to build the Tangara class in 1986, and they were on the rails two years later and have been ever since.
Fast track to today, the D set. Arrived in Australia in 2019, and for three years has sat around like a millenial on welfare. Why? Because they were built so that they didn't need gaurds, but the technology doesn't work properly so they are considered dangerous to run.
Also, that advertisement looks like the begining of a bloody music video. Nothing like the dreadful cg coorporate style walk throughs they have now.
Yeah I think the average life of rolling stock is about 30 years. I know some countries push that to 60 plus depending the part of the world.
Yeah, the D sets are stupid. Seats that are irreversible and the train made to allow running without a guard for services that run for hundreds of kilometres a trip and is full of unmanned stations with short platforms. Whoever gave the green light with these trains is completely out of touch. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the twilight years of the mighty V-sets.
