We’ll, it’s 315am and I’m finally sitting down with a cold beer beside the wood stove in the garage. I think I’ve watched your vid about 3x now. Have a 1999 John Deere Sabre 15.538 gear. Came with the house we bought this fall. Mower sat for about 4 years, last owner said they couldn’t get it running. It was going to be my winter project, so I drained the oil. It was all fuel. Put in about 2 gallons of oil flushing the gas out over the last week and a half. Bloody float was stuck and gravity did the rest. New fuel filter and installed an inline fuel shut off. As I was making my way to the carb I realized it was hydrolocked. Broke everything down. Cleaned the carb. New oil. New fuel. Once I broke it loose she fired up first try. I am mechanically illiterate, can’t tell you how much I appreciate the video. The motor and carb are near identical to yours. Made for easy going. Cheers.
Just got a Craftsman LT2000 for $60 because the guy said when he would engage the blades the engine would quit. It has no rust and looks to be in very good shape so I bought it. My plan was to keep it around for parts as I already own 2 working craftsmans and they're newer. However, I started to tinker with this one and upon trying to start it the motor would crank but not start. I removed and cleaned the carburetor which solved the starting issue then I checked the safety switch connection under the seat....of course it was unplugged. I connected it and now I've got a mower that runs perfectly for $60 and about an hour of my time. Great vid!
I know this video is a year old but that spring that broke when you removed the carb isn't the governor return spring. Its purpose is to maintain the slack in the throttle linkage in one direction. If it's allowed to have play in the linkage you get the surging. Just saying. Good video.
Seeing your lawn in back, unless ya'll put sod in ya'll won't be needing her. Good work on your project and will mow for someone for a while. Good job.
@Max AC It was so nice to see one of those running as dad had one and back when he bought it brand new it was his pride and joy to be able to cut the acres around the house. Hours and hours days and days he would keep the grass looking so good. We lost dad 4 yrs ago now and recently I looked to kind of restore his old tractor and found the deck beyond repair….yours was excellent by comparison. I’m so hoping to find one for it. Till then I want to get it running well so mom has something to pull her little trailer with all her flowers for planting and taking away the weeds and old plants that have expired. It’s something of dad’s to help keep those memories alive throughout those summer days. His was almost identical except for the 5 speed….his was hydromatic and that function still works. Thanks for this repair video that brings back so many memories. 🥺😌🙂
As a "computer guy" who never took the time when I was younger to learn from my uncles and cousins.... this is not only invaluable, but so cool. I see how you troubleshoot and go about it, but the real lessons are probably in what's not in the video. Lol this was so cool and I really wish I could do this... I keep paying people to fix my shit and it sucks.
Keep watching and if you find time learn by doing. Pull a mower off the curb that someone discarded. Best way to learn is through trial and error. Good luck, Cheers!
Hey man great video just letting you know when your disconnecting those throttle linkages and govern spring always try to take the whole carb off first then take those off it just makes it a whole lot easier.
Great job. The only thing that I owuld have done was paint the dash and the panel between your legs. That rust looked bad alongside all the nice work you did polishing everything else.
Good video on bringing that mower back to life:-) I am in the process of doing the same thing with a JD Sx85 rider that sat outside for at least 6yrs anyway. Paid $50 for it and having to put close to $350 into with a newish seat being $85 of that but it’s all in good fun and personal entertainment in bringing these neglected old machines back to life:-)
I'd try replacing the valve stem in that original left front riding lawn mower tire you took off of it for A spare. It's most likely the valve is broken.,or weather crack from setting up so long in the yard. They call that weather checked .,weathered checked. Secret to you wheel wet.& Aromor all tire spray.
When you press the brake pedal, there is a lever on the "dash" near the blade lever, you simply push that small lever up, that will lock the brake, so you can start it w/o having to hold the brake pedal with your hand. Your deck spindles are trashed, when you heard the grinding noise when you moved them by hand, you can replace both of them for about 40 bucks. New ones are so quiet, you would be surprised.
That surging at the end of the video is probably the idle jet. You mentioned it as “stop” for the throttle earlier in the video while you were cleaning the carb. The idle jet if clogged or dirty will cause that surging at idle speeds.
Sometimes the Idle jet will cause surging and I have ran into that problem before but in this case I forgot to reattach the governor return spring. Thanks for the comment . Cheers!
That Corinthian leather deserves only the finest Saskatchewan Sealskin bindings! Thanks for the information, my neighbor just hauled an identical looking tractor out to the curb for scrap which I grabbed, only mine is a Craftsman Kohler Command 15hp but it seems to be the same B&S engine only a different top cover.
Just A quick fee tip truck to ya on that part of it all. I'd try it out to see for yourself on that part of it all to. You half to get all of the ethanol &water out of the container though for it to work right for sure. That's we're alot of people mess up when trying to do that process of separation of the the ethanol &water from the gasoline fuels to.
two suggestions, get yourself a ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning the carbs and also a dremel tool with a brass wire brush for cleaning electronic contacts on the ignition switches.
A very good video with lots of content. I love your methodical approach of inspecting and testing before you tried to fire it up. That takes a lot of patience. Just to nit-pick a bit, I think you should have replaced the seat for the carb needle. That said, it sure ran well when you were finished. Good work!
Well you know how it goes. If you don't inspect and test beforehand you end up doing it afterwards. Takes the guessing out of it. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!
Your as obsessed with making everything back to original as I am (gas guage). Even though we can just look at the side of the tank or remove the cap to see the gas level we still like to see if we can fix the fuel guage.🤣😂
Need to adjust your carburetor a bit but it’s kinda choppy open up your air fuel mixture in a little bit there, so it smooth out back it out till it almost dies and then ride it again
Check the rim bead seal around the tire to it could've came loose from away from the the rim cause of bad Leaking weather checked valve stem is all. Over the years of usage. Then he couldn't get it to move due to that. So it just sat there instead.

@@MaxAC that’s awesome i bet he was glade u got it working great job on restoring it I wanna do something like this but afraid I’ll lose those tiny pieces
@@juggalosquad5027 thanks. It was real fun. You ought to pick up a small mower or edger for free and practice working on it. And if you lose something it's not a big deal.
Just a small suggestion for the next time possibly if it matters but when sharpening your blades make sure to keep quenching it with water to not ruin the heat treating of the blade potentially making it softer or more brittle. Also you might want to take a close look at your paste wax applicator before using it on your truck or just replace it at this point to prevent anything scratching your clear coat. I'll tell you how you can DIY your own ethanol free gasoline at home to o really cheap for your lawn equipment.&boat motors to if you have A boat to. I have LT2000 with hydrastatic trans (automatic). wont roll or start. Is it because in gear possibly
Like this one it could be your belts are stuck in the pulleys. But it could be in gear.
Hydrostatic drive has a release mechanism on the back that must be released(pull out) to allow it to roll ‘free’
Im doing the same thing ur doing nice mower looks good
Thanks, good luck with yours.
You know how to do it
The Stihl 2 cycle oil/2 stroke oil is not A very good brand to use. Although people have to their own opinions. On that part of it all to. Each to their own on that aswell to. Hopefully & maybe this can help you out with saving fuel.& Money 💰 to possibly aswell.
Wish I could find a free mower
Get out there and look. They are all over. Just gotta talk to people.
