    1. First time 1989 when I was 12 with my father who died a year later.
    2. Returned to Disney for the first time since 89, 08/2018 and road it again 5 times with my 10 year old son.

I’m a former Disney/ABC employee. At the Burbank Lot, in the commissary in 2003, there were a couple glass display cabinets that featured big black and white photographs. Each was a “making-of” the Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean ride. They featured artists arranging “the silks” (plants, trees, flowers). Electricians wiring the lights that would become the “explosions” of cannons. The waterborne explosions were essentially an air manifold that created a splash while a headlamp style light switched through several iterations of yellows, oranges and reds in a split second. I remember the old stage ladders secured in the (dry) boat canal. The A-frames bolted to heavy plank wagons with an extension that pushes up through the middle and locks on cams. Basically 1960’s extension ladder/scaffold combos that are still found around some stages today. Scenic painters using the height advantage to turn a typical drop ceiling into the morose midnight sky and sticky summer clouds of the bayou. Brought to life by speakers emanating a cacophony of crickets. Lightening bugs hung carefully on monofilament. The old swamper on his porch. And of course the costumers using every trick in the book to dress the pirates. At the time I was a set dresser on one of ABC’s most popular spy shows.

Although I like none of the later changes, the biggest tragedy to me was the loss of the final pirate battle. It represented to me that the pirates had so much in-fighting that they had reduced themselves to a few remaining survivors murdering their own crewmates in an orgy of greed, bringing about their own downfall.

    • @Fredo_Viola

Still one of my family's favorite attractions at the park, although my favorite part of the ride isn't really the meat of the ride itself; it's the beginning part where it's floating past the restaurant and into the area of the swamp before going down into the area where the pirates are. When we lived in LA we bought season passes for our family just so we could pop in every so often solely to take that ride and eat in that restaurant.

Nice. I always rather enjoyed the smell of the place too. It always had something of a briny, "moist" smell (but not moldy) to it, if that makes sense. One of the things that sets Disney apart from virtually every other theme park is that in each of their rides they cater to as many of the senses as possible, so I'd suspect that smell in The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction is intentional.

It has ruined comedy and pretty much everything else. I wish that more people would stand up and demand that they change it back. Pirates are supposed to plunder and take the women and treasure. That's what pirates are! I mean if you no longer wish to show pirates then don't, but to whitewash and bastardize them into something that they are not, is just unforgivable. And of course, then the whole thing with MK, where they shortened it (I guess that Liberty Square's not worthy of having something in lieu of the bayou, by you, like a harbor themed to the old school USA Liberty, then the fact that only the original, earlier, Disneyland version in New orleans square was intended to be a partly underground walk through, there aren't as many scenes in Florida.)

I completely agree with you! One of reasons I haven't gone to Disney World to ride it again. I want to keep the memories of the original ride. Political correctness ruined this ride and distorts the actual history to something that never existed. We pirates didn't have clocks and chandeliers. We already had sand hour glasses to measure time.

I went on the attraction for the first time this year (well, not exactly this one cause I went to Disneyland Paris but I see they're pretty similar) and I absolutely loved it. I'm 21 years old and obviously didn't get to know the old version as I was born just one year before the first movie was released, but I still think it's an amazing ride. I know most of you who got to know the original prefer it that way, but honestly, I was so happy and excited to see my pal Jack at the end. I'm definitely repeating when I come back and this time I'll bring my mom, she loves the movies as well 🖤

I worked in the main kitchen area under New Orleans Square back in 1983 for the summer. Greatest experience was walking down those stairs into the ride before they opened! An employee/cast member Bob allowed me to walk up to the treasure scene, bed scene, and the skeletons with the wine going down their throat scenes! He would tell me not to touch anything which of course I didn't. I had 20 minutes to explore before they started the animation and then the sound.
One in a million get to do that! I could have gotten fired for it but I planned my adventure a couple of weeks in advance by knowing when my managers would be at a morning meeting and which horrible ones would not be working so they couldn't see me open one of those doors leading to certain entries of the ride! Many of those exit signs you see in the beginning of the ride led up to a long corridor that has the underground kitchen that feeds all of New Orleans restaurants.
How Disney caters to the PC Left makes me sick!

This is really, really interesting! I rode this for the first time about a month ago and I immediately wanted to ride it again. I am in love with the history of pirates, so it was really neat and fun!! That being said, something doesn’t have to be “accurate” in a THEME PARK for it to be fun or good. I think a lot of people whining about it being changed due to “pc culture” or whatever are weird af for trying to be gatekeepers of the OG ride, defending weird stuff like women being chased around, etc etc. The story is still pirates being pirates! Just have fun ya’ll, it’s Disney 😊

When I was younger and first went on the Pirates ride, I remember seeing Davy Jones and Blackbeard's faces on the waterfall (which to my little-kid eyes looked way bigger than it really did) and not having seen the films, assumed it was the same person changing forms. Then years later when I rode it again, I noticed only Davy Jones' tentacled face appeared, and figured I must have misremembered the transformation.
This video has vindicated my memory of alternating waterfall heads.
