The funniest thing about Beetlejuice is that Michael Keaton adlibbed nearly all his lines. When he kicked the tree over, that wasn't supposed to happen so he stayed in character and said his famous line "Nice f***ing model!" to the person who worked on the model set. Tim Burton found that so funny, he decided to keep it in.
"Her torso is separate from the rest of her..."
The magician's assistant is a simple but very well done effect with two ladies each half concealed by the set.
In case it didn't register, she or her magician messed up the trick and she actually got sawed in half 😅
GREAT MOVIE! Because of this, Tim Burton found his "Batman"! And Shree, that singer was the late, great Harry Belafonte singing "Day-O". Mr. Belafonte sadly passed away earlier this year... :(
33:22 "Is that a popular song?"
Oh, goodness. Yes. That's _Banana Boat,_ by Harry Belafonte, from 1956. It's not just a _popular_ song. It's a song of _enduring_ popularity.
Great reaction! Kudos on noticing Juno’s slit throat. Most people miss it. As to the other people in the waiting room:
*The guy with the little head was an explorer who got his head shrunk by a witch doctor.
*The heavy guy with a bib choked on a chicken bone.
*The guy with the shark on his leg was attacked by the shark.
*The flat guy was run over by a car.
*The football team was in a bus crash either coming to or going from a game.
The clues are in the aesthetics of the characters as well.
Anyhow, glad you’re feeling better, and I look forward to more of your reactions!
Thank you so much! Also for giving the backstories for the dead characters 😍😍
Michael Keaton is such a blast in this.
He was known mainly for comedies in his early career.
The original draft of Beetlejuice had the character much more dark: a sadist, rapist and homicidal maniac.
The second draft was much toned down and made of him an obnoxious pervert which Keaton totally nails.
Agreed! I gotta watch more Michael Keaton comedies! 😍
@@ShreeNation One Michael Keaton film that few mention as part of his filmography (mainly because his appearances are brief) is Much Ado About Nothing (1993) Along with Keaton, it stars a number of other major hitters (Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, and Keanu Reeves). It's well worth a look, even if you don't react to it.
I remember when this movie came out it was very popular. Then they said they wanted him to play Batman in the Tim Burton 1989 film, people were sceptical about him doing it because his Beetlejuice character was so overwhelming that no one could imagine him as the Dark Knight. But he was able to do it and became one of the best Batman's ever
"Are you a ghost, too?"
"I'm a ghost with the most, babe."
Fun Fact: Michael Keaton, playing the title character, only appears in 14.5 minutes of the film.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Tim Burton feared the Day-O (1956) by Harry Belafonte sequence wouldn't go over well, since in his opinion it wasn't very funny. He turned out to be wrong, audiences loved it and think of it as one of the film's most iconic scenes.
Parapsychology Foreshadowing Fact: At the dinner party, Otho (Glenn Shadix) states that people who commit suicide end up as "civil servants" in the afterlife. This is actually expanded on in the film. The civil servant ghosts that Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis) meet are people who appear to have ended their own lives. The receptionist (Patrice Martinez) says she committed suicide, there is a man who hanged himself, and the crushed messenger (Carmen Filpi) is implied to have done it to himself. Juno (Sylvia Sidney) looks normal, but there are scars on her neck that indicate she cut her own throat. Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) is said to have been a civil servant and Juno's assistant; it was going to be explained in the film that he hanged himself (incompetently and very painfully), due to heartbreak. While this was cut out of the film for running time purposes, it is hinted when Beetlejuice is surprised at Lydia (Winona Ryder) wishing to die.
Wow, I didn't know about Beetlejuice's death story, thanks for letting me know 😮🙏
My pleasure.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
I won't spoil it but the sequel shows how he actually died.
49:55 Get a load of this car. It's a _miniature,_ but somehow, it functions exactly like a scale-reduced _car._ 🤷
Adam was more impressively detail oriented with his models than expected.
Haha, I wonder what fuels this thing 😆
For Keaton doing Shakespeare - Much Ado About Nothing. The Kenneth Branagh version, with Denzel and Keanu 😉
Thanks for the recommendation!!
Congratulations Shree!! You're the first reactor i've watched that noticed the smoke coming out of Juno's gaping throat, they didn't even notice her sliced open throat. I had a feeling you'd notice. I've watched several reactions lately since Beetlejuice is one of my favorite comedies. Micheal Keaton was perfect. Catherine O'Hara is one of my favorites. She was in "Best in Show" which cracks me up every time i watch it. Thanks.
Thank you, yeah it caught me off guard when I first saw it! It was so cool 😍
38:51 😊The year this movie came out, I turned ten. When I first saw this movie, I was _incredibly_ young. I remember finding _this_ particular part a _lot_ more exciting than they probably intended it to be.
The idea of death as a giant, poorly operating bureaucracy is funny and depressing at the same time. The look of some of the afterlife office scenes is highly influenced by German Expressionist films.
The song "Day-O" is performed by Harry Belafonte. He was a very popular Calypso singer in the 60's. Calypso was the for runner of Ragae.
*Michael Keaton (Mr Mom) & (Gung Ho)*
There actually is an animated show based on the movie. It runs like three seasons, and it takes place after the movie. However, the continuity is changed up, in that Lydia and Beetlejuice actually have a friendship. And, the Maitlands are completely omitted, in fact they are ignored, no reference to them, other than Lydia and her parents still living in the same house.
6:41 I give you Tim Burton's vision of the _Afterlife._
25:35 "Every person has a _story_ in that... in that... little _office."_
Yeah. And I imagine _that_ part is inaccurate even if we allow for all the _other_ liberties this movie takes. The fact is, most deaths in the world don't make for entertaining _viewing._ Juno apparently died by _decapitation._ One guy, there, died by being run _over._ The receptionist died by having her _wrists_ sliced. One lady died by being literally cut in _half._ There's even one guy there who evidently died in a _shark_ attack, and somehow, he brought the shark to that waiting room _with_ him.
But what about the people who die in ways that _don't_ leave outward indicators? What about the people who just pass away, peacefully, in their sleep? What about the people who die from a _heart_ attack? What about the people who die from a blood clot in the _brain?_ What about the people who die from something like muscular _dystrophy?_ What about the people who just die from old _age?_
Oh. What about the people who were _stillborn?_
What would _these_ people look like?
Probably as normal as the couple would look. I'm guessing whoever dies of natural causes aren't stuck in these offices in this movie's universe.
There was a cartoon adaptation, and there’s as well a musical adaptation, with quite good songs!
In my humble opinion, Keaton could gave made a excellent live action Joker,.
I think he could have been a scary Joker, like Heath. Keaton has that kind of dark manic energy.
Definitely a solid choice!
Then he could be his own arch nemesis. 😄
yes if you commit suicide, you are made a social worker for the dead now that is hell
Indeed
Multiplicity is a great Michael Keaton movie.
Thanks for the recommendation!
25:49 Shree: "Is that Beetlejuice?"
Juno: _"Sh'!_ Don't even mention his _name!"_
On re-watch, you'll see that the miniature town's been on display from the very first scene, and comes into play as an important part of the story. The little funeral scene was Adam's imagining of what it must have been like, in his model. It wasn't the actual funeral.
My favorite bit in the movie (aside from The Banana Boat Song):
Adam: What are your qualifications?
Beetlejuice: Ah. Well...I attended Juilliard. I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I've seen The Exorcist ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT!!!! NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY!!!! NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK? You think I'm qualified?
Love that whole scene! 😂
Coming October 2024, BEETLEJUICE 2.
Can't wait!
September, actually.
About the small head guy and small head Beetlejuice.
The one with the small head is like a European explorer and the one who reduce the head is like a n aboriginal person.
In South America (where I come from), specifically in the Equatorial and Peruvian Amazon rain forest, exist a tribe called "Shuar" or "Jivaros" that had this old tradition called "Tzantsa".
Tzantsa is the ritualistic reduction of the head of an enemy chief defeated. They simply take off the skin of the beheaded head, cook that skin for 15 minutes and then dry it on fire and smoke until the skin is reduced to a one quarter the original size. Then its lips are sewn shut and all holes are shut to prevent the soul to scape. The heads are kept like trophies.
Today, the Shuar have left behind wars and shrunken heads and they are well integrated to the community. There are even politicians from this ethnicity.
Wow! That's fascinating!
"The Banana Boat Song" is a popular song courtesy of the late Harry Belafonte, whose music is played throughout this movie: Adam's character seems to be very fond of Harry Belafonte, which means he has very good taste in music. The fact that it's a Harry Belafonte song is a clue that it's Adam and Barbara doing this, not Beetlejuice, who, you remember, Barbara insists at this time they do not use.
From the very first scene with the spider: ruclips.net/video/SAmGvd-4rhM/видео.html

Banana Boat Song: ruclips.net/video/H5dpBWlRANE/видео.html
Jump in the Line: ruclips.net/video/kMXBJW1PuU8/видео.html
Belafonte is associated with the style of music known as Calypso, which explains the mention of it after the Banana Boat sequence.
24:35 "What about that guy in the flier. You know. 'Beetle-'"
_"Sh'!_ Don't even say his _name!_ He does _not work well_ with others."
🤔 But he's the afterlife's _leading_ bio-exorcist. So... there are _others_ we might be able to call?
Maybe not. If he’s the only one, he’s also the de facto leading one.
Beetlejuice is the kind of person that you constantly have to ask "Did you shit your pants?"
“Or did I?”
😂😂😂😅
Today being the actual day of Halloween, one of the most disturbing images on YT was for me not (a reaction to) a horror film - this one's one of my favorite Burtons, btw., and Winona's probably never been bad in any film that I remember, but a clip about a wasp with its head cut off. OK, a decapitated insect, not a nice thing - but the freaksome part was that it was seemingly trying to reattach its missing noggin, like just one of those things that happen now and then. Even worse than finding out that insects, like cockroaches, can survive a week without a head, was realizing the wasp wasn't attempting to stick its thinking lobe back on, but to eat it . . . The character sitting in the waiting room was 'Harry the Hunter' whose gourd also suffered by being shrunk by 'The Witch Doctor' close by.
More creative than scary is a good description of Tim Burton's style.
There was a TV series! It was a Saturday morning cartoon, and instead of being evil, Beetlejuice is Lydia's weird ghost pal.
Beetlejuice 2, the long-long-long awaited sequel is due early next year. Keaton is back, along with the Deetzes.
Weird how some really violent movie characters became Saturday morning kids movies back in the day. Toxic Avenger, Conan, Robocop, etc.
There is also a Beetlejuice cartoon show. They made Beetlejuice and Lydia best friends there , very different but hilarious. That show even won an emmy for outstanding animated program.
Also of course Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit theaters and it's so much fun
Damn, I missed the viewing. I didn't expect one on a tuesday. Hope you all had fun. It's a classic movie.
Fun Fact: Geena Davis references herself with the line "Be very afraid". She famously says the same in "The Fly"
Haha sorry about that, this was supposed to come out on Halloween but I got sick! Hope you enjoyed :)
Happy Halloween Shree, and what a Fun Surprise...I've Loved this Movie ever since I was a Kid!👍"Beetlejuice" is still the Most Fun-&-Funniest Character that Michael Keaton has ever played; it's almost hard to believe that Tim Burton cast Him to play Batman instead of the Joker...or that Tim Directed both Movies back-to-back (only one year apart)!!✌
Btw Shree, I've been scrolling back-through-all of Your Videos, and I noticed that You don't React to anything Animated. I'm sure You have Your Reasons why-not, but if You'd ever reconsider😉then I've got the Perfect Recommendation: We've been talking about the Transformers now-and-again, but are You aware that there's an Animated Movie from 1986?!? If You've never seen that one before, it's a Guaranteed Must-Watch: it's Peak 80's in the Best ways...it's so Epic-&-Timeless, that even the Live-Action Movies are still "drawing" influences from it today!👌
There's plenty of animated movies I'd suggest before this one but not gonna lie.
The 1986 Transformers movies is one of the best non Japan animated movies of the 80's.
It's simply put, one of the best Transformer related thing ever.
@@davidmeir9348 Thank You, and I couldn't agree more!👍
Hey there, hope you enjoy tonight's reaction! 😉 Glad i picked this one now that I found out its one of your childhood favs! You're right, it totally slipped past me that I ought to see an animated film on my channel! Thanks for the recommendation, I'll make a list of animated films to watch here along with Transformers! 😍
My question is...Do you camp out here? Your comment was written 7 hours ago? I just now received this notice for this post. My suggestion is...Sleepover! Make S'mores, have pillow fights, tell ghost stories, and watch the movie together 😊
@@tomhoffman4330OH by the way 'MOURNING Tom! (See previous comment)
Actuallly, there was a Beetlejuice TV series, but it was a Saturday morning cartoon. They made the lead character more kid friendly and made him friends with Lydia. The show followed their adventures together, sometimes in the afterlife, sometimes in the world of the living. If you think about it, a lot of this movie does seem cartoon-like.
" SHREE - SHREE - SHREE !!!! "😂😂😂😂
😬😁
@@ShreeNation " It's Showtime!!!!" 😉
The office on the other side is one of the most accessible workplaces I’ve ever seen
"This sounds like the kind of music the Joker would play..."
Well... 😅
Danny Elfman, of the band Oingo Boingo, is a bit of an odd duck, and scores most (maybe all?) of Burton's films (Including his Batmans 😉).
Beyond Burton, he has worked with many famed directors like Peter Jackson (The Frighteners), Sam Raimi (Darkman and Spiderman), and Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy 2).
Wow! Thanks for letting me know, the music definitely felt familiar 😍
Ah, see, this is why you read all the credits! At the opening, it proclaims that Michael Keaton is Beetlejuice.
Good ol' Burton. He's best when he's not doing a adaptation of something, be it Planet of the Apes, Alice in Wonderland or Batman.
I've often wondered if Tim Burton had seen the UK tv show, The Ghosts Of Motley Hall. A short lived, but much loved kids show in the 70's. It basically has the same premise...a neglected grand house, with ghosts from various eras of its history, scare off prospective buyers. The estate agent( real estate agent if you're from the US) can see and interact with one of the ghosts, and is kind of in on the plan to find a buyer that will restore the house to the way the ghosts want it to be.
Probably worth a look for die hard Beetlejuice fans, it has a really solid cast of UK actors, Peter Sallis and Arthur English amongst them, and is well written, genuinely funny!
Wow, sounds interesting 😍
@@ShreeNation it's on youtube, two seasons and a Christmas special, adds up to about 20 episodes
44:28 This was supposed to be a _seance._
44:58 It ended up being an exorcism.
Early Tim Burton was a great dreamer. His visuals were magical and spellbinding.
I never understood how the family act like they never saw the house before they moved in. Did they not look at the house before buying and leaving their previous place? Risky
Good question 🤔
There have been several tribes that reduced the head of their sacrificed. I knew the custom when I heard about the Jíbaros
Interesting!
This is hysterical! This movie has a macabre sense of humor and Michael Keaton totally nailed the character. The musical number at the dinner table was hilarious! I laughed so hard I had to use my rescue inhaler. This is a good Halloween movie. 5 out of 5 stars.
It’s funny that Tim Burton had a lot of doubts about the dinner party scene, but it ended up being one of the most beloved by audiences.
Juno wasn’t decapitated, her throat was just slit, either she committed suicide or she was murdered.
One of my favourite films,I saw it 7 times on original release many times on tv.I also have on vhs and dvd...plus many youtube reactions 🎩
Great reaction! I love the afterlife waiting room. The people who committed suicide became civil servants.(Miss Argentina is the receptionist , Juno the case worker)
Thanks for watching :)
You have taken me right back to my childhood I haven’t seen this movie in a long time. I miss the 90s so much I was born in 1988 by the way.
"The Vultures are gonna come!" As Keaton (who plays a supervillain called the Vulture in Marvel/Sony films) appears onscreen
Great timing Shree :)
Haha, what a coincidence!
"I'd tie his hands, or glue them on the floor" lmao immediate subscribe
😁 thank you 💖🙏
I love how the so called "podcasters" (who does have a podcast) are the amazing Trixie and Katya lol
😉
If the house is purgatory, the waiting room & bureaucracy are hell!
I don’t know Shree, the Torsoless Woman had very nice legs. 🥰😆
There was a animated series for Beetlejuice that came on Saturday mornings, watched it as a kid but couldn’t remember if they mentioned his backstory, however it took them many years but they are finally making a Beetlejuice sequel coming out soon so you’ll wait with us Shree. Keaton, Ryder and OHara are rumored to return in it. 🪲🪲🪲
Can't wait for the sequel 😍
You would have enjoyed the 80’s cartoon that was based on this movie. The Maitlands aren’t in it though, and Lydia is actually friends with Beetlejuice.
ruclips.net/video/G0PdJjyIa7Q/видео.html
Thanks for letting me know :)
Of course, the film scoring power of Danny Elfman is FANTASTIC.
Hope you're feeling better! So funny: this is what I think of first when I think of Winona Ryder! ha! This was the movie that made her a star. And this is totally the type of performance I think of when I think of Michael Keaton, over the top comedy performances, that's what brought him to fame in the 80s, sort of like a junior Robin Williams. Movies like this, Night Shift, Mr. Mom. That's why it was such a shock when he was cast as Batman (and I still don't buy him in that role!). Anyways, I hope you're feeling better! See you on the next one, sis!
Thank you so much! See you in the next one! 😍
Cool reaction this is one of my favorites I hoped you had fun reacting to this also I subscribed to your channel👍
Thanks for watching, and for the sub! 😊
Your welcome👍
I liked the cartoon more :>
But this is the second movie i like to call "2nd best horror/comedy movie since The Army of Darkness"
"Dark Shadows" is another funny Tim Burton film.
Thanks for recommending!
Just realised the mom is the mom from home alone 👍😊😎🇹🇹
Michael ad-libbed most of his characters dialogue
It's definitely one goofy crazy funny Screwed Up movie😅 I personally am a all black fashion. Great reaction, sorry ur sick. We have all been there. Keep doing what you're doing and u will be a star..a bright shinning STAR😊 Great job Beautiful SHREE❤
Thank you so much 😊
"Betelgeuse" is pronounced like "Beetlejuice" - in English "g' next to "e" or "i" is *usually* pronounced as a soft g, sounding like j.
Betelgeuse is a star, and its name comes from Arabic, meaning: "the hand of al-Jawzā’ [i.e. Orion]".
Thanks for the info 😍
9:50 🙄Typical married couple. 🤷
👍😀😀😀😀😀... Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice.
I always thought that Juno was killed by a botched tracheostomy procedure because of all the smoking she does. Maybe the surgeon went mad and did a Sweeney Todd number on her.
I have a miniature village, which I use to run my model trains through. I have different sets of buildings so I can change them out depending on which trains I want to run: ruclips.net/video/WvDYC6n2BC0/видео.html
That looks incredible! Thanks for sharing 😍
Unlike the model village in Beetle Juice, however, my model village doesn't have a demonic brothel...
Search up Harry Belafonte, immensely popular mid-century Calypso singer. My guess is that you will like him a lot.
Will do :)
Jane is a horrible character but otherwise this movies always fun. Good reaction. Hope you’re feeling well. Love your jacket! 👍👍👍💜💜💜
Thank you so much 🖤🤍❤
Good ear, Shree. In Batman (1989), Jack Nicholson steals Michael Keaton's show to Danny Elfman's music.
In Betelgeuse (1988), Michael Keaton steals everybody else's show ... to Danny Elfman's music.
Nice! 😍
I stand behind Alec Baldwin.
It's just too dangerous to stand in front!
Cool jacket btw!
😆😆 thank you!
Great Movie...
Thanks for your Reaction..
Thanks for watching 😊

Hi there Shree
Hello Aran
