Stunning Brown Trout in a tiny spring creek, one of our favorite locations and combination! We take on cruising & searching brown trout in incredibly tight cover and structure in a favorite spring creek. It's a game of inches and angles as Amelia's luck is ever so slightly less than Dave's. Sometimes fly fishing brown trout in tiny spring creeks leaves us with slightly different result for painfully subtle reasons. Luck sometimes has a lot to play, but quite often subtle angles and mere inches on a cast can make the difference. In this video Dave's "luck" comes as result of those inches and angles.

We are. It's turning into an intense drought year after severe flooding, but given how our last season in Alberta was the same it's not too much a surprise as they often mirror. Glad you enjoyed this one as well :)

that's neat. A few good fish in there - not many, of course, but, fun. I suspect we'll give that creek a rest for a few years as it has become incredibly familiar once again :) There again, one more flood might erase it from the map too, hopefully not.

Highly professional production. Thank you - very well done. I love fishing smaller streams, so this video caught my eye. I would love to see more on this kind of topic. One small chalk stream, the Meon, in Hampshire, UK, which I am fortunate to be able to fish, is no more than a couple of rod-lengths wide although has some deep holes, which make wading interesting. That stream has wild fish only, and despite its small size some run to 18 inches. It can be challenging. I have found that wearing dark clothing and using rotten stone to dull the gloss finish on my rod, avoiding flash, help to improve my catch rate.
Sounds like a gem! We're fortunate to be able to poke about often but these waters are really few and far between. They are special to fish. Yours sounds like a good challenge and no doubt the fish are sensitive to about everything with a little pressure. 🍻

Those are literally all the trout in that little creek. Maybe one or two more but otherwise it's a good reminder of what these gems can actually produce and how long it takes. Gorgeous little spot 😊

I hunt deer etc. at about the same speed … see much more and disturb much less! It has served me very well over the years! I fish this way too! Excellent advice!
if you're only focused on broadcast shooting from the hip, you'll get a few random successes. If you want quality and incredible experiences, you slow right down and meet the animal in its habitat and outwit it based on the prior experiences we accumulate. Spot on to your point. Consistency in big browns or deer/elk hunting comes from right that. :)

I was fishing a tiny Alberta brown trout stream this summer in high water. I caught what was mostly likely a 24" brown awsome experience. Two or three bends up the river. I was scouting high on the bank when I spotted a high 20s, probably 28" and I spooked him. I was a bit disappointed, so I moved on. On my way back down, I knew I would get another shot at him. I absolutely did I positioned myself where I thought he might be and casted my small streamer and boom the large brown hit instantly, and boy, was I not in position. The large brown ran upstream under a log jam and shook me off under a tree. I have never been so disappointed with myself while fishing. I thought I just pulled a Dave Jensen lol then lost it, lol . But as I look back, I realize that Brown will most likely be in the same place next season, and i will hopefully meet up with him there again. By the end of the day, I got three browns over 20" and lost the beast. Awesome day on home waters that I will not soon forget.
Aw man.. those are the memories! Nothing is more gutting than spooking a seriously good fish and watching it swim/bolt for cover! But the walk out usually offers a follow up shot if we plan it as you did. But the way out chance often goes as you describe too - coming at it from an off angle and things don't quite line up for success. So close! But those are the memories aren’t they??? Captivating footage . You do so well to fish and film to such a high standard. Any suggestions for avoiding spooking fish in thin water on bright days when the tippet casts a shadow on the stream bed?

After a day willow grubbing on a southland stream in 32 degrees I found that very entertaining guys. I was intrigued by Amelia's comment about how she should have watched the dry indicator rather than the fish's mouth as I have bungled many subtle takes doing just that. I suppose it is all about the speed of the fish's approach where the reverse of the rule applies eh?
It's the one amazing thing about sighting fish in fly fishing: what to focus on. Earlier this trip I missed a nymph eat outright on a 7+lb brown that came off the bank and ate a nymph right at me. A large male, he came out and I swear even now his mouth never opened. I watched both eyes focus forward and pec fins flared. The dry never tickled. Suddenly he erupted, thrashing his head left and right with mouth fully opened to shed my nymph. ZERO chance. There are moments that fascinate us in these situations and once so focused one way or another, man is it easy to miss the obvious!
@@jensenflyfishing and you guys pretty much always fish with short responsive droppers too! Quirks in the flow have a lot to answer for too....
@@TimmoMcGinn we vary depth up a lot and vary the fly/weight dynamics up a lot too, dependent upon water types and dynamics. In this water you can't go too deep nor heavy but many other waters will see under-sized or over-sized tungsten on 6" to 4 feet+ droppers. Again, wildly variable. The sexy ones that make the IG videos are shallow and short but that's not the norm, certainly. Esp this year! :)
@@jensenflyfishing speaking of sexy they were all looking up at cicadas in the Canterbury high country yesterday on a bluebird day with an upstream breeze....and no paradise ducks within cooee!
@@TimmoMcGinn I bet they were :) We just came off a frustrating bit where we fished 3 days in a row where we were either the day after or the same day as anglers ahead of us on low population streams. We moved on, naturally. Rejigging the plans and moving ahead soon enough :)

Birds of prey when I live would destroy a fish feeding like that around my parts. We have a lot of bald eagles, ospreys, red tails, and falcons. You should see when they stock trout in the rivers around me. The birds of prey know the big green truck that the state stocks fish with. The clean out all the rivers.
Somewhat true but we have all those same exact birds around this creek and our home region is wild trout, not stocked. Different regions of the world are interesting by comparison! 😊🍻

The only thing I would like to address is that weather you don’t realize it or not, that from my point of view after watching your videos is that you’re not giving a lot of video time to your wife, what i see is that she gets to make a cast on two different times then the rest of the video is all you
