A terrific performance of one of the greatest movements in concerto history. It doesn't get better than this.
And it was at his house that I heard for the first time Bartok's Third Piano Concerto and learned from Mr. Teszler that it had been composed in nearby Asheville, North Carolina in the last year of the composer's life. He was dying of leukemia and he knew it, and he dedicated this concerto to his wife, Dita, who was herself a concert pianist. And into the slow, second movement, marked "adagio religioso," he incorporated the sounds of birdsong that he heard outside his window in what he knew would be his last spring; he was imagining a future for her in which he would play no part. And clearly this composition is his final statement to her -- it was first performed after his death -- and through her to the world. And just as clearly, it is saying, "It's okay. It was all so beautiful. Whenever you hear this, I will be there."

A very touching history. I didn't knew it. Thanks very much.
I just saw that TED lecture and followed to listen to the melodies from Bartok for her wife, Dita.
that video by Bernie Dunlap just brought me here to listen to this beauty. Reading you made everything much better. Thank you for posting this part of his speech here.
She was too brokenhearted to perform the premiere. A colleague of Bartok's took the baton.
I got here after watching the TED Talk about the humanist Mr Teszler and Bela Bartok's last composition dedicated to his wife, knowing that he was to die of leukemia . Beautiful music! Thank you for posting it.
I will always admire Bela Bartok.
Directo al ALMA✨
Magníficos todos, director, orquesta y pianista.
Bravo!!👏
Awesome music ! Less is really more !
magnifique interprétation bravo
Very good. Very very good.
It's said that Bartok was happy near the end of his life. This reflects that.
GREAT.......
I adore this movement, its probably my favourite piece from Bartok although I do enjoy playing his solo piano pieces too. Many thanks for posting!
Sentimiento devocional puro
...there´s just no second Geza Anda in the world to interpret this transcended music...
I like it!! It´s wonderful!!
I hear... love. :)
Sos grande, gracias por compartir estas joshas.
I am not certain why, but I enjoy this Schiff/Rattle/Birmingham better than all the others posted of this last piano work of Bartok. Thanks for posting.
Même atmosphère lyrique de l'andante du deuxième concerto pour piano de Shostakovitch mais plus optimiste et plus "dans la nature".
❤
This is amazing, especially if we bear in mind that, as gr4l8um20b7o has pointed out, this is Bartok's last piece. Thank you for posting.
Today's Classical Corner... Bartok's final farewell.
It was composed in 1945, during the final months of his life, as a surprise birthday present for Ditta, his second wife.

And modern music not emotional?Perhaps, but tfor me this piece hard to hear without tears. Not coz i'm hungarian in Hungary, i Think. This piece is everything, the best piece in 20th century classical music. Thanks to the performers!
what hes channeling
Parfait !
This is probably a slightly drier (and more hollow) interpretation of this movement than I'm used to, but this is a wonderful performance, nonetheless!
Sorry can’t find the word to describe this movement
Ben Dunlop brought me here.
Raison: Bartok écrit ces pages avec la mort en vue tandis que Shostakovitch écrit son andante après la naissance de son fils.
Is 3:08 a mistake?
It sure was.
