I was all into King Kong, old and new,, when this came out in December of 1976. I was even reading the original book adaptation in 6th grade and remember saying "it was the ultimate in science fiction".
Then about six months later something else really caught my attention.
Still love ol' Kong and have even grown in my appreciation for the '76 version.

My favourite Kong film because of the score and the beautiful Jessica Lange. Thanks for this retrospective of the merch.

This was my favorite childhood movie, in large part due to Jessica Lange. Viewed it 7 or 8 times at the theater before it finally went away. I had the board game, the viewmaster discs, trading cards, T-shirt iron on, paperback tie-in book, several puzzles and a poster. lol I was mesmerized by this film as I child.

Ah the good ole' days. It was great being born in the early 70's. We've seen so many changes. Like the "two years" it took for a movie to go from the theater to TV back then.

I was a little kid when my family went to see it and I remember the theater lobby and lots of merchandising. I remember having the mug and we had glasses that bit the dust over the years, but I still have the stuffed doll that's survived 40+ years. My brother had the poster.

All the original King Kong did in 1933 was save R K O radio pictures from going under. Soon there was " Son of Kong" in 1933, and " Mighty Joe Young " in 1949. Special effects by Willis O' Brien.

I was 9 years old when the film was released in theaters. And after years of working as an illustrator, I’ve concluded that the reason why so few toys existed was because the coolest most marketable form of merchandizing the studio could come up with was the movie poster itself. Which explains the glasses, puzzles, lunch boxes, T-shirts, board games and anything else they could slap that image on. They even made sure to cut and paste Kong’s head so that it could be used for alternative images as seen on the Burger Chef glasses.
My other guess would be costs, in conjunction with the then oil crisis, since the idea of manufacturing 3” 3/4 scale figures wouldn’t become the norm for at least another year or 2. Especially when you take into account that the standard size for action figures was 8-12 inches. Kong would have to be much bigger in order for Mego to include Jack Prescott, Dwan and Fred Wilson at the scale they were known for. That is unless they went with the pocket sized of course.

SNL had a hilarious skit about Kong, with John Belushi playing the producer Dino DeLaurentis talking to Tom Snyder. I must have seen this movie when i was a little kid on cable because i remember knowing who King Kong was as a very small child, and i don't think i would have seen the original black and white movie at that young age, but cable was just starting out and they had a limited ammount of movies, so this King Kong movie might have been one of the movies that they had on their channels.
