Thank you for the kind words, but in this video, I did very little. The words all come from other people, I’m just reading them. And of course, the realest focus is on the life and work of Lee.

It’s 0:12 and I. AM. SOBBING. Alexander McQueen formed a great part of my self discovery as a designer and to see fashion through another perspective : real, raw, unapologetic. It was Spring 1997, I was barely in 6th grade. Browsing through a fashion magazine, I came across pictures of this collection, and it caught my eye. It was love at first sight. Not knowing anything about fashion, and in an internet-less world, I held this magazine and forced my mom to buy it. McQueen made me see beauty in ugly. To challenge norm. To provoque. To start a conversation. We mourn artists not because we knew them, but because they helped us to know ourselves. I worked in studio in London which was building all McQueen sets for fashion shows for years. And the last year before Alexander death was more mentally mad, dark year, that I quit my job just 3 months before his death because It was unpossible to carry on, just madness all around. When I saw after his last show, it represent all we were in at that time. Dark energy was filing London, madness and sense of loss was everywhere.. I miss him forever.. It was weird time..
I wasn't expecting a video on Mcqueen, but this is an incredible reflection of his life and work. Can't believe it's been 10 years already, he means so much to many...
Lee was also the first fashion designer that led me into the world of fashion. I am still feeling the sadness after him leaving us for a decade. Thank you for making this episode for everyone who loves Lee, who was inspired by Lee. He will always be inspiration for a lot of people now and then.
When I read his biography "Blood beneath the skin" I actually cried several times. And it gave me undescribable power. Please consider doing analysis of all his collections like you do with Margiela. In your eyes it will be terrific material.Thank you for this
McQueen was a male witch. Working with the elements was so integral in his work. It's magical, and he has become my favorite designer because he transcends fashion, it's not shallow anymore, it has profound depth, as you have helped prove with your well-written commentary.
Beautiful, profound and so touching! Rest In Peace Lee, your talent and the contrived beauty of your soul still remains a force in our heartes, your legacy will live on forever! 🌹🌹🌹
Thank you Bliss for sharing your thoughts.I follow you on Patreon too. I was crying at the end, I'm a fashion student with a deeply passion of making clothes. I'm a dressmaker but it's hard to be in this world if you are a bit fragile. The only way is keeping believe and express yourself. Thank you Bliss, Thank you McQueen, I hope one day I'll work for this amazing fashion house.
Oh my where do I start? This Tribute to Alexander McQueen's work really is great. I appreciated it and you referred a help for people as stated earlier " you are a special person." You truly are.
McQueen lovingly gave his amazing vision and the deep emotions of himself to the whole of humanity. He reached out to us all, made all emotions acceptable and a analysis of our lives essential even when grewsome and horrific. If only he could have lived another 50 years. Still very sad... Incredible piece from all involved, with their thoughtful writings and insight, and Bliss for your presentation. Thank you.
Lee and I were born the same year and relate incredibly to his creative approach and intentionality. The theatrics of the house and the mode of transformation in the work, coupled with revolutionary presentation formats, are not as unpredictable or exciting. Artist. I'm ready and need more.
Beautiful video man really made me tear up. Your analysis is very calm and it was just heart touching in a different way fashion rarely makes me feel. You’re astonishing in everything you do. Thank you dude.
I was lucky to see the McQueen exhibition at the Met. The clothes were even more mind-numbing in person. If the standard for designers was to create clothes great enough to belong in a museum, think of how different fashion could be. I think about that sometimes. I own a dress from the Irere, or shipwreck, collection. It’s definitely my most prized possession.
This was very beautiful. So many goosebump moments at the end. You just inspired me to check out more of his work. Don't ever stop this channel please 🙏
The enthusiams, discussion & rewatching fashion archives & current is so me! let’s talk about fashion anytime here on youtube! my dream is go to Paris someday to work and study again at fashion school. Thank you! love from 🇵🇭

this is food for the soul!:D, great selection and as always, I really enjoy your commentary and analysis of the meaning behind the work! This makes me want to go and re-watch the McQueen documentary right now!
Lee Alexander Mcqueen is dearly missed and never forgotten 🙏🏿 🙏🏿 🙏🏿! Personally I actually preferred his romantic side over the very theatrical pieces. My favourite shows: his posthumous show in 2010, his debut haute couture show at Givenchy 1995, Scanners 2003, his show dedicated to Isabella Blow & that collection inspired by Pirates with the tropical bird feathers!
He did weaponize flaws, that was his greatest talent. Great art reminds you that you are in your body, and that you can hurt and become enraptured. As a fat woman, seeing the naked and regal fat woman at the end of voss was my moment of empowerment from Mc Queen. As we all, as admirers of his work, must have a moment of his that speaks most to us, the voss ending is something I will always call back to in moments of hopelessness.
Great video, I never get tired of learning about McQueen. One question: I don't understand how the brand went from intellectual genius to skull-studs and basic sneakers. Does anyone know a good video or article that talks about the brand evolution after McQueen's death? Thank you!!!!
@@BlissFoster Thanks for the reply! Many labels manage to find good creative directors though, that can carry on or at least take an interesting spin on the legacy. I am thinking about all the big names, e.g. Lagerfeld for Chanel. Is that because they were more "commercial" labels in the first place? Or was it especially hard for creative directors to step into Lee's shoes because of how young and incredibly driven by one single person the brand was? Or maybe I am just unreasonably hating on current McQueen. Maybe we just need to wait for the right creative director to come?

You are showing all his pain. The more brilliant he became the stronger the pain. The mind of the true artist lives in pain so great you just want it to stop. I am an artist and I live on the brink of suicide daily. Lee lived a life of quiet desperation.
. While I understand the idea of creativity coming from pain, I think oftentimes the idea of it is often too romanticized. While suffering is a constant in all aspects of human life, the reaction to it is flexible. I believe that an artist is defined not by intense pain but by intense emotion. Although pain is the easiest emotion to sculpt into art, I think it is critical to the artist to expand the emotions that drive expression. Easier said than done, of course, especially in an industry such as fashion which drops designers into a cuisinart with walls of impossible deadlines and blades of their sufferings. With Lee, it seemed that what was keeping him on this earth were the two relationships that meant the most to him; Isabella Blow and his mother, Joyce McQueen, with the latter's death preceding his suicide by 9 days. And while I do think pain plays a major component in Lee's work, it is actually a larger iteration of this theme that is the true overarching lens: our power over pain. Obviously, it was a battle that proved unsuccessful for Lee, but it is by no means some large overarching statement that it is impossible to achieve happiness and still be a powerful artist. While it is true that many brilliant artists have issues with mental health, correlation does not mean causation. Ultimately, it is the relationships and love that we provide to others and others provide to us that give us the power over our pains. And with that being said, if you ever need to talk to someone about the pains of yours that you mention, please never hesitate to talk - I would offer for you to message me but am unsure how to do so on youtube - if you are on the patron discord, I am balaga there. But regardless, that was a lovely comment and it is very important to not ignore Lee's pains. I apologize if I come across as argumentative here, I only wished to provide the idea of creativity's independence from pain and the importance of those who surround us. Perhaps if these ideas are emphasized more, we can avoid more tragedies similar to that of McQueens. With love.

After a brand becomes a legacy label (original designer leaves), it’s usually not independent and the focus becomes money.
