- The mansion remodel continues! In today's episode Justin, Austin, DC, and I started building the new roof on the wrap around porch, we picked out new decking material, and we got ourselves into a sticky situation regarding new shingles for the house. The house is finally starting to not look abandoned, and we are one step closer to finishing the siding project.

Justin is a great builder and to work hard and then still do side jobs! Very strong and capable! Keep up the great work Justin! -Mama Telle❤️🙏
The contrast in the roof colour, could look fab!! I've seen houses like that!
My dad passed this morning and my mom passed in March. We have her ashes and will soon have his. It's very reassuring to me to see how respectful you are of the work you do. I'm glad to see that. God bless you and your family.
Sorry for your losses. 🇨🇦

The first video I watched of yours was cleaning your hoarder house for the first time. It was the tag line that got me to watch it. Can’t wait to see the outside done.
Good choice on the decking. People on the blacktop road will never see the difference of the shingles, going by at 65 mph. Kudos to Justin. Good looking frame. And working 7 day weeks. WAY TO GO JUSTIN!
I am currently off from work due to an on the job injury. I just had major neck surgery and I can't do anything. I can't stress enough how much I look forward to all of your videos. Daddy CS, Summer, Nave and Momma C included. While I was in the hospital, I got all my nurses interested in watching all of you from the beginning. You have quite the fan club in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Thank you all for helping me through a rough time. Keep em' coming please!
Your Grandpa would love all of the work you are putting into the old house and yard=) From what DC said he would love the new porch on that side of the house!
The porch is coming along so nicely! Going to look really great. Check with your insurance company about the wind storm last year damaging the double doors. The repair should be covered and get them for DC. He really doesn’t ask for much.
I actually made a porch our of OSB - a small temporary one. It was painted with porch paint, and lasted five years. I just replaced it yesterday, and you are absolutely correct about the "expensive" part 😉 - not a big fan of composite decking so we went with treated pine.
Composite decking is far superior to any type of natural wood, there are so many different styles and choices available and they require no maintenance.
@@mikeshultz1007 Composites are low maintenance, not "no maintenance", and there are a lot of issues with them. I would go with Ipe, white oak, black locust, or redwood any day.
What is porch paint?? I only know of exterior paint to use on my front steps and railing.
@@riab6021 Several companies make a 'porch' or deck' paint. I believe we used Valspar, and we had them mix in and anti-skid sand and tint it red. Porch paint is more wear resistant than normal paints, but you still need to touch-up high traffic areas every few years. Exterior paint on the railings is fine, and will work on the stairs as well, but it will wear off faster. Hope that helps 😊
@@PlanetMojo Thank You for the thorough information. I will most definitely investigate it. I also didn't know about the anti-skid sand. THANK YOU again!!
With the dark decking you be able to see all the yellow/green pollen and footprints easier. Darker shows more dust and dirt than lighter.

In Australia attaching an extra board to stabilize the original is called "Sistering the Board". A time honored practice.
Australia isn't real.
That's what it's called in Minnesota too.
S.C. also
@@MrLifeissomething ??? I am from Australia and I feel very real 🤣😂
Hey, nice to know there are more things in common with our distant friends, hope your having a good one.
We built a deck this spring with dark boards for main deck and a lighter color for the border, The darker boards are 30° hotter than the light boards, that was on a 75° day
Thanks for finally showing me that type of roofing I know a bit about roofing and I’ve never seen anything like that before interesting
Enjoying watching the process of how you’ve changed things around the home. Look forward to the next videos. Keep em coming!!!
Justin is a wonder with a hammer in his hand. Big thumbs up Justin. I enjoyed watching the video. It's nice to see progress getting done with the wraparound.
Is he though... 🤔
There’s a siding tool you could use to just pull out just the siding in the area you need to.
And it's VERY inexpensive! 👍
Yes! Deck option #1!
Love how the mansion is coming along. Grandpa would be proud of all you hard work ❤️
Cole, a new overhead door and slab would be a great Labor Day gift for DC. Get it done before harvest time. He deserves it! Go with light color flooring! The dark stuff will show EVERY footprint from dogs and boots. You should have raked and covered the area under the porch with visqueen and gravel before you built the deck. You will have weeds under the porch.
I remember when I was a kid we put a brand new fence up around her property! So we can keep the cows in! One cow disappeared this summer! No fence breaks! What happened to it! During the winter another one went missing! Are fencing head three strands of barbed wire across the top of it! That started at 4 feet high! None of our fencing was broke down!
Winter: it walked over on a snow drift!
Summer: it swam across in high water!
Mystery solved 👍😉
It’s gonna look beeeeautiful!! ♥️ Love the colour of the door and I love that older door with the oval glass. Thanks for letting us watch your “home improvement” show. 😉
Most of the composite decking has a grain on one side and smooth on the other. If you don't like the grain pattern, just use the smooth side.
The grain pattern minimizes slipping on it.
Cole you're really a carpenter way down deep, very deep inside. House remolding always take a long time even if Justin is there. It is going to look awesome.
Cole.
The up dateing of you house is looking very good. It will be great when it new porch is done, as when a rain storm comes you can set on the porch and watch the rain storm. Please Take Care of your self be safe.
I remember doing that with my grandmother. Loved watching it rain! 😍
"I hope they send some lubricant with that bill", just cracked me up. I'm gonna start using that line.
Can’t wait to see more videos of the the house remodel.
I am so happy to see the outside coming together. It's going to look so good when it's all done.
Daddy corn star, find a piece of metal c channel about a foot long weld a couple spikes on the bottom and stick it in the middle of the sliding doors. Traps the doors so the won’t blow open and easily removed when needed.
Genius! Also, you might want to check out an aircraft hangar with sliding doors. They are huge. Several ways to solve this.
That's how the doors for the alley of our corn crib were done. Worked perfectly! 👍
Rain is a blessing! House will look fantastic. Vinyl decking is extremely hot in the summer, cannot walk barefoot on ours! Love the Lava Rock color, similar to ours. Great investment, keep up the great work.♡
That porch is going to beautiful when its all said and done. I have a wrap around on my house and it needs to be redone. Needless to say Im super jealous of your porch Cole. Hope you enjoy it.
Porch is coming along nicely! I like the door color, and the decking to match will be a good compliment.
Cole, I suggest the striated grey on the far right of your sample colors. It will blend with most any color and stay cooler to the touch on hot days. Most of all, it will always look cleaner.
This farm has come a long way! You can be very proud of yourself for accomplishing so much..it looks fabulous!
Your Grandfather would be proud of what you are doing to the house and everything.
New day. New chicken feathers. DC is never boring.
It's looking good! I love the porch!
For your sliding doors that blow out with the wind, when the bin site concrete gets poured, pour a small ramp up to the doors and leave a channel for the doors. The channel will hold the doors in place when the wind blows. Looks like you have a few inches of concrete floor above the dirt on the inside of the doors, so that should work perfect. Just make the ramp rise up to meet the concrete floor, but deep enough in the dirt to hold your equipment's weight.
the dark decking will show every foot print - bear feet or shoes - go for a colour that looks like pine decking and do the colour you like as trim on the wrap around deck poles etc
Absolutely true!
And hot! Dark colors absorb heat. 😉
Agreed
They have bears in Iowa???
@@danlowery3235 No, the bears are in Chicago, but are thinking about moving to the former race track property in Arlington Heights. LOL
This house is largest, free advert for *TYVEK* in the history of the Internet.
Those guys should sponsor you.
That exposed Tyvek has actually bothered me for a long time now. The fact is, you can't leave house wrap exposed to uv for more than a few months before it degrades. Tyvek has one of the longest exposure limits but it can only be exposed for 9 months before it needs to be replaced. I'd like to see some Zip System sheathing go up but that's just me.
Justin is amazing you all are so blessed.
Shout out to Justin! House looking great.
Don’t forget to add 4x4’s or 2x12’s to support a couple of porch swings in a few places on the porch ceiling. Lesson learned.
Excellent point.
If u have a wrap around..you have got have a swing or two. 😁 They even have have hanging beds. Good place for Cole to take his naps.
Use to sell the composite decking and #1 complaint was the darker colors showed scratches from dragging tables, scooting back in a chair ect. Also sun fading issues. Under the table was dark but the rest of the deck was a lighter color.
I would have chosen the exact color composite you picked out Cole.Look at you Cole. You're an exterior decorator too.
Stay blessed family.
I like the darker color for the porch floor . It’s always a lot of work , re- Building a house. But you’re doing great Cole, keep up the good work.
So, do I... But, don't try to walk on it with bare feet in the summer. It will also radiate that heat into the house during the summer.
Always good videos! Hanks for sharing you house fix-up challanges. It may be different than ours, but somehow we end up getting it done. Thanks to Cole, Daddy Cornstar, Justin and Summer for her editing. You do a great job Summer!
that small difference on those metals shingles wont amount to a tinkers damn Cole , excellent call using metal btw
We put TREX on our deck. Our neighbour put a mid-grade one due to cost. When a chair is slid across the boards on his, it scratches. We can slide furniture around on ours and no marks whatsoever. Use the best quality you can afford. It will last much, much longer and you’ll be happier. Our neighbour is talking about re-doing his with TREX next summer. The scratches drive him nuts…..Also, dirt shows a lot on dark - as it does on really light colours.
It's going to look great, especially with that fancy yard. Excited to see it complete with siding.
Smart move in picking up every sliver of wood off of the ground under the porch. When my house was added onto 40 years ago these same scrap/drop pieces of wood were all left on the ground under it and termites had moved into to eat them and they had swarmed my house. It was very expensive to get rid of the termites and repair all of the damage that they did before I ever saw it. It took 3 years to finally get them all.
OOOOH! thank for the heads up on the steel roofing! we've been looking for metal roof options and for some reason, that style never popped up!
Purchase a few extra flooring boards. We went composite and discovered a few years down the you will need to replace a board or 2. Ours is held down with stainless steel screws. They snap off when backing out. Now you must destroy the board to get it off. Buy a few extra so color is a close match.
A portion of our home was built in 1864 and I did a little renovation on what was originally an exterior wall, and what I found is that back then they used birchbark instead of tar paper, or now tyvek. Yes, birch bark..
Your number 1 option is personally the best one. It has some gray tones that will look amazing with your siding.
It's gonna be beautiful when it's done, especially with a new Bin Site!! Congratulations to everyone's hard work.
Started watching your videos because of the remodeling of your family home. I am happy for you for the progress you are making!
Lava rock is the best match and complimentary. Gets real hot in the sun though. Place is looking great!
Tell Summer more videos!!! They are always good though! Love the progress on the house!
I’d go third from the right(expensive side) I like the more “natural” clear coat look, plus dirt and pollen doesn’t show up to much.
That one is gray with contrast in the “grain”. A nice look.
Thank you, Justin!
I sell lots of Trex decking. I would recommend Pebble Gray, you will probably regret going with the darker colors. Much hotter and more movement of decking because of the darker shades.
I agree, it will retain heat and will make the porch area look dark. Nave's tan is a better choice. It is a nice, gentle contrast with grey siding. Besides, your life will be much happier if you go with her choice.
I have seen several decks built with Trex and the stuff warps and bows up and down a lot in the sun. Gotta have lots of extra joists to support it vs regular decking lumber or it will look like a warshboard (washboard).
Agree. The gray is my choice too for the same reason. Mahogany makes more sense (if you like the look) in a residential setting where you don’t walk on the dirt or gravel and dirt roads. I would definitely reconsider. Mahogany is my favorite wood for furniture. You might want to ask your Mom who has years of experience.
Are joists on 12inch centres recommended for this reason?
Trex is pure garbage. All of it. There are way way way better options
Pour, the cement up to the doors to hold them in place! We did, works fine!
Dark flooring won't hide dirt. We have a dark brown porch floor and it shows every speck of dirt. It gets absolutely covered in pollen in the spring and has to be scrubbed off. We also have a wrap around porch and that's a LOT of surface area to clean off.
Love watching the progress on that beautiful old house. Keep up the good work.
Just a suggestion, put down 12mill plastic, then stone, under your deck to keep moisture/weeds from the ground coming up and wrecking your joists or deck boards. It happens. Also, just go with a plain metal roof, it'll look awesome, like it does already.
I’m with you Cole on the decking color, it’s all going to tie in quite nice!
I agree about the dark flooring and I will tell you why. Visually it makes sense to have the dark colors on the bottom cos it is like heavy on the bottom. Then lighter colors above, which also looks lighter weight. So dark flooring makes sense emotionally. I have dark composite and it looks great.
Thanks. I like the slower pace. Interesting restoring "This Old House"
I agree on decking color choice. Distance between porch and roof shingles will camouflage the difference.
Cole that is the right choice on the shingles, and my eye immediately focused on the same colour sample you chose for the composite decking. I hope somewhere on the house you choose to paint an outside door a bright colour, something of novel choice like a very dark navy blue, light blue door, or even bright red, or yellow....maybe a door that is like a side door or back door....too much wood stained colours can be too much....
I like all doors the same color, whatever color that is. 👍
It looks fantastic I have followed you from the start you amaze me with your enthusiasm and pure grit can't wait to see the finished product
Cole you are absolutely correct in your colour choice you made for your decking. I’m well known in my area as a home builder / home designer and that’s the colour I would have chosen too.
I agree with you on the porch floor color. Good choice Cole! 🌽⭐
Very cool - will be so satisfying to get the porch on and the rest of the house done!
Good call picking something darker for the decking. Also some of the composite decking (I think Trex?) are VERY susceptible to getting stained by fat. For example - drop a hamburger and permanent stain! There are solid PVC deck boards but they cost a lot more - in your situation with a generational home I'd steer clear of the composite stuff and stick with the solid PVC stuff.
There's a reason old time porches had gray floors. It's cooler, easy to match color wise and not terribly expensive. I seem to remember thar the inside of the porch roof was frequently painted sky blue. Slap some glow-in-the-dark stars on it and viola you have an all season porch. (I know, bad joke.) Things are looking good. Hope the Lord sends you excellent weather.
Re: replacing slider doors. DC mentioned wanting a concrete pad, could you put in a pad, leaving a channel for the slider doors? Would that give you a “ stop” for the slider to resist blowing inwards or outwards and save the cost of an overhead door for now.
The only issue with a channel is it would fill with dirt/mud all the time. 😬

Two years???!!!!! Have I been watching you for that long already?
Its really lookin good Cole. It is going to be beautiful when its finish. Thank you once again
I can't wait to see the finished home. Be safe as you all continue
Your house is going to look so great when you get finished! I really love the wrap-around porch. Our first house had a screened porch on the front of the house. I miss it so much!
That will look so nice. I cant wait to see it finished. Then onto the inside! that is going to be exciting.
It’s looking really good . You all have done a great job. God bless.
Love the sound of rain on a tin roof , Aussies love colourbond .
Thanks for another great video. Enjoyed it very much. Appreciate the rundown on the progress of remodeling your house. Coming along great. The porch will be beautiful when done. You all have worked hard on this project. You have lots of rain. Good for your crops. Very dry here in Iowa, need rain. Thanks again for the video. Looking forward to the next video. You all take care and be safe. Thanks. Iowa farm boy from years ago.
For the low cost, add hurricane straps to keep the wind from sailing that porch into the third county over.
Or derecho straps, as the case may be 😉
Looks like Trex Essentials. We went the Spiced Rum picture framed with the Havanna Gold, it looks amazing. Composite decking is worth every penny, extremely easy to maintain, just clean with water and mild soap and rinse. No sealing, no splinters, no fading.
Those metal roofs are tough . The other week a tornado hit my area and a farmhouse that was hit decently hard (90% of their farm was destroyed) had a metal roof like yours, and there wasn't a missing or noticeably damaged panel to be found. There was, however, a 2x4 though the second story wall. Of course, yours made it through the derecho too... tough stuff!
Lava rock was what caught my eye, too. It looks really good with the shade of your gray siding.
Be glad you live where you do. I live in a small but, costly town in Skaneateles NY. You would have to jump through hoops just for the zoning and paperwork!
If you pour a concrete slab up to the doors, you’ll have a built in door track, and won’t have to worry about the wind as much.👍
Good job 👍! So exciting to follow the renovation of the house 🙂!
Those are the best saw horses ever. I have two sets. Wish they still made them.
Justin is very good at what he does. The whole house is going to look so awesome 🤷♀️🤗❤💯
I have the same exact steel shingle n my house and garage. Incredibly easy to install and they last 50 years.
Where do you get them? Every place that I have found that has them won't ever sell them to do-it-your-selfers. They always want to install them and charge way big bucks to do it.
@@joefuddI built a 26 x 30 ft garage extension and my supplier got them for me. I don’t even know where they came from.
Steel shingles and steel roofing are the smartest choices because out there in the wide open spaces the wind is always blowing strong. 3 tab shingles never would survive it. I found out the hard way when I had buildings built on my farm. Had nothing but problems with asphalt shingles especially since they were installed with air staples and air nails which really suck because they have very little surface area to hold down the shingles and they easily pull through. If using asphalt shingles always hand nail them with roofing nails that have large heads and use 5 to 7 nails per shingle.. I also found out that vinyl siding does not do well in high winds either. If you use vinyl siding use tons of extra stainless steel screws with large wide pan heads to hold them down and also leave them a bit loose.
Bumble bee mating with the DeWalt tool. LOL 😂. Good reason to buy Milwaukee tools.
The DeWalt black and yellow looks like the SNL Killer Bees. Easily fooled the bee.
DeWalt is renamed Black and Decker. Never had any luck with that brand since the 1980's.
Progress on the porch! It's getting exciting now.
I haven't watched you in awhile Cole. You look so much more relaxed.
That porch is going to be gorgeous!! Well done Cole!
I work in a paint store. Number 2 or number 4 (the one to the right of number 1, at the end of the sample area) is my pick.
Oh shit! I guess that's the one you ended up choosing!
