Like your outfit Vanessa, paying tribute to currently playing Marvel's Black Widow now~ that's why I like your photos better, the lighting brings out the best of the model's mysterious dress as well!
Your first loss in a tight contest. I like Manny's use of harsh light and am interested in using it, too. It helped make the room look bigger with artificial sunlight streaking down from a high window. This whole series is a great collection of differing styles.
Photos were amazing. I liked the bluish side light that Vanessa took the best. As a side note, Vanessa, your outfit was 🔥!! I half expected Manny to start shooting you.
Cool video for sure. Those pants you wearing Vanessa…. Très nice. I thought they were just super high boots… Your style photography/fashion snd overall approach is just so cool. Happy I stumbled upon your videos snd you’ve both taught me some tricks and revived/inspired my love for photography. 😊
The way I view Budget gear vs professional gear isn't so much about getting "The Shot", because even someone with a cellphone can get amazing shots. Having more expensive gear allows you more choices on what will give you "The Shot". When I upgraded from a Canon T3i to a Canon 80D, and upgraded my lens, my rate of "good shots" went from maybe 10% to about 75%. It gives me more options. So yeah, you can take amazing shots with budget gear, but if you are doing a wedding or a professional shoot you are paid to do, having better gear will give you more leeway for more options to make the client happy.
There is diminishing returns though. When I went from 80D to R5, the benefits were much more limited IMHO. Mostly in action or very thing DoF. My landscape stuff is very similar with f2.8 zooms anyway.
Yep and it gives you much more keepers over a broader range of types of photography if that makes sense. So when upgrading from an EOS RP to an R6 for example, you gain better high ISO, better controls, IBIS, faster readout and more, what does this convert to? Well way better low light concert shots, silent shooting that's actually useful if there's a bit of action because the readout is better, better sports photography because the AF is better, better video in certain scenarios because of IBIS, etc etc. If you want to dabble in birding it's easier with the better AF too (albeit you lose a bit of crob ability with the lower MPix).
@@TheDka1 I agree with both you and @darkdeepmoon ... as these pros showed us, you still have to have an idea of what you are doing with the gear and the results you're after. As enthusiasts we can buy $14K of gear and still have a poor hit rate. Or we can shoot with what we have, get better at it, and then notice our limitations and upgrade when we know what we need to complete our vision for the type of shots we want. These shooters are making me wanna go to another class...
Great series you've made Vanessa, I've watched a couple and love the outcome and the models are really lovely. Don't forget the photographers, of course, keep up the great work!
Both Vanessa and Manny are two of my favorite photographers. I learn so much from both of them. This time around Manny’s hard light barely wins in my book. I may play around with hard light just to see what I can do.
This was the first one where I didn't know until the end. This one is the toughest one yet to decide. I love both of ya and I don't really think I can pick. I love both a lot
Can you call the 17-70 really budget at around $800? Its optical performance is pretty much the best you can get. The combo of a6400+17-70 cost me about €1800 🙃
Budget ranges are different for everyone i primarily buy ore iwned gear as im on uk benefits. So anyrhingbi buy has to a be pre owned or quite cheap. In the firstvplace, ivs just bought a £40 lihht2softbox lighting kit aling with seoerate bowens mount foy my yongnuo nikonspeed lights
Watching Manny pose the models is like a freakin' master class in portrait photography. I also loved seeing his lighting techniques contrasted with yours. This was probably my favorite video in this series, but then I'm already a Manny fan. Tough call between Manny's first shot and your third for my favorite pic. Great job. You should pair up with him again for some more portrait/lighting techniques. Both of you are so awesome!
i like manny's idea and that really paid of... the spotlight and the split light was my fav.... and vanessa's white balace move was epic... but i would like to go with manny this time

@@VanessaJoy lolol not true. But I thought I saw a video like that. Where the photographers shot each other. You both look good in front of the camera.
Amazing work the two of you !! Loved how manny uses hard light to create full body photos and how You Vanessa used the colors !! One question to Manny how did you adapt the Magmod magnet … I have only round flashes from Adorama and would love to do the same ???
My vote is for Manny - mind blown with your use of the Gobo’s! They’re so edgy and cool! Not taking anything away from Vanessa though, her shots are equally amazing, can’t wait to see the next episode!
Both Vanessa & Manny have superb talent.. Superb.. That Tamron 17-70 lens Is barely a "budget" lens.. while it's 3rd party lens.. it's very solid in comparison to ~ Vanessa's lens which is DEFINITELY Budget.
Great video @Vanessa Joy as always, but big question. What’s up with that R3? Keep up the great work and please please please tell us about the R3 we are dying out here lol.
love vanessa process on the shoot itself but manny pics was better with the end result......great job im a fan of both thats why i clicked this video THANKs
Great images from both photographers and too hard to pick a winner. Vanessa, you have the beginners guide turned on in the M50 Mk II, which is why everything is 6 clicks to get to. Turn that guide off and everything will be 2 clicks away at the most (if you prefer using the LCD and the Q menu).
Amazing shots from both of you! Love the effects you can get from those lighting adapters. I wish I knew where to start with that. If you have any videos that would help, please link. 🙂 Cheers!
I think hard light is not about the light, but about where do you place the shadows. Just look at Hurrell. But that said, I think you won this one, Vanessa.
lol i hate you guys, you are too damn good! my vote is for Manny, I just LOVE his Shots...I guess that is more my style so I gravitate more towards those shots but again both killed it again...👍
those budget gear is not that chalenging... both m50 and 6400 is a very great camera... try doing something like kai man wong does the cheap camera challange that one is much more intresting to see the result on... try using something from the early dslr days.. that one shud be more challanging
Vanessa could you go against Peter Mckinnon? Or Chris and Jordan from DPReview? Or even Tony and Chelsea Northrup? Would be fun and love to watch any of this!!
I really like the slit lighting coming in like through a crack in the roof or a high up window. Would really love to see a mix of Manny's 1st and 2nd picture: the slit lighting from shot #1 and the pose and tonality of shot #2. Shot #3 doesn't really float my boat. Vanessa's shot #2 is really great, the 3rd one I'm with Manny here, I think I preferred the yellow only gel, the 1st doesn't give me much to be honest, I personally (!) don't like cutoff limbs coming into frame that much. I think I give it to Manny here.
HI Vanessa.. Hello from Berlin!! I have seen your other video and saved myself from getting an RF85mm and now I know that I want 135mm F2! Thank you for making such great videos!! While watching this video, I had to call in my wife to show your outfit and probably will try to get something like that for her as a gift soon. If you don't mind and not too personal, can you share more info/links on your outfit ?!
Hey Vanessa love your videos 💪 I know this video is old! my wife and I Saw this Video Yesterday and she fell in love with those pants/leggings they are absolutely dope! where did you buy them from? thanks
I really enjoyed the video. It would be great if you could get Jessica Kobeissi on, I really enjoy her work and think it would be interesting to comparedwith yours. In terms of the challenge - I think having a studio is actually the main edge you have - how about trying to take great photos in a less controlled environment? I know Jessica does her "on the street". All the best, J
I think have just as much control on the street as I do in a studio 🤷🏻♀️ actually I prefer it, but maybe that’s bc thats how I’ve been shooting for the past 20 years. Studios feel limiting to me. Jessica would be fun to shoot with for sure!
Foul! Ok, I’ve watched a few of these, and I think you guys might push the definition of ‘budget’ sometimes. Canon camera? Ok. That 28-75 f2.8 lens? Maybe. Magmod stuff is kinda pricy for what it is, but not too bad and REALLY convenient. BUT, there is no way using Vanessa as a light stand is remotely affordable. Have you seen her rates? Not her photography rates, her light stand rates? I like what Manny did with the slit, and, as much as it pains me to vote for a Sony camera, have to give the nod to him.
Though the wider shot reflects more location, when I shoot I always take a wide shot then a closer shot. Ironically for me the closer shot always wins. It shows the person so well. So even though I get many great shots like Manny's I fall back to my close up shots in final. So I guess Vanessa would be my choice for style. Often the combination of both makes a great set in my shoots. But I do like the close up shots. Vanessa wins for me.
The colors didn’t work for me (sorry Vanessa), so I’d have to hand this one to Manny. I’m still trying to figure out how he achieved that spotlight effect. I’m guessing it was the Magmod modifier, but would like to know how to achieve it in another way, as I don’t consider Magmod budget at all.
With all this talent on screen. We all win 🥇
